“Nice central hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2007

The Alicia is a nice hotel very central for all things in Madrid. It has a unique style, rather quirky perhaps, but enjoyable. It does not have many facilities, but the staff are all english speaking and very polite and helpful. The trademark of the Room-Mate hotel group is an apple by each bedside every day and they were very nice, too!

There is a small lobby with some seating and breakfast is served in the attached Tapas restaurant from 7-30am weekdays and 8-00am weekends and holidays. You literally step outside from one entrance to the very next. Breakfasts were an acceptable buffet and you can have as much as you want.

The hotel is equidistant to three metro stations, Anton Martin, Sol and Sevilla. Each is about 5 minutes walk - Sevilla is a slighly more direct route to the hotel than the other two.

The hotel is on the corner of Plaza Santa Ana, a pleasant and busy little square and almost next door to the Teatro Espanol which is also on the square.

The outer rooms overlooking the square can be a litle noisy with much coming and going into the early hours - this is likely to be the case with any room overlooking the street.

There is good shopping around the Sol metro station and the Plaza Puerto del Sol. A little further on is the theatre land of Grand Via. There are many restaurants and small grocery shops in the vicinity of the hotel. The main museums such as the Prada, Thyssen, Reina Sofia are all about ten minutes walk away - the Royal Palace is about the same distance in the opposite direction.

A nice hotel that we would readily recommend to anyone planning to visit Madrid.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2007

Stayed in a duplex apartment over Easter 07 having found the hotel on THIS website but booked direct with the hotel.....and then also enjoyed staying an extra night in a standard double room on the first floor as we loved the area so much.

To cut to the chase, unless staying in season when its warm and you want the outside space that the Duplex offers then overall the standard double is MORE than adequate if you plan staying out sightseeing and revelling most of the time, plus the soundproofing in the standard room was far to superior to that in the Duplex on the top floors - more about that in a minute.

The hotel location on the bustling Plaza Santa Ana is brilliant - only 10 mins walk maximum from Sevilla metro station on a pretty flat pavement (if you are dragging cases) and the metro stations Anton Martin and Sol are very close by. It's 15 mins walk maximum to Plaza Mayor, Prado and the Retiro. Plus there are loads of great bars, restaurants and tapas bars on the square.

Plus not forgetting the uber cool Midnight Rose bar and Penthouse bar are directly across the square. (Rioja at €6 compared to €2,5 in other bars on the Plaza Santa Ana).

The Alicia hotel itself has a very funky lobby, brilliant white with a curvy sofa and polished silver staircase. Abstract sculpture and a cheeky animation of a nude female model strutting her stuff add to the overall avant garde feel of the common area. Cheerful staff with a great "can do" attitude. The staff organised soccer tickets for us at the Bernabeu with the minimum of fuss, and were happy to arrange accomodation at short notice when we decided to stay an extra night.

Rooms can be accessed via stairs but the hotel does have a very small lift - only large enough for two people with their cases at a push.

Once inside the duplex bedroom one is hit by the feeling of walking onto the set of an episode of Miami Vice from the 1980's. The rooms are very angular with straight lines and lots of glass, silver bannisters and white walls, whilst the black tiled wet area adds to the somewhat "retro" feel with mirrored doors separating the WC from the communal bath/bedroom. A large black and white canvas photo of Madrid compliments smaller pop art / Lichtenstein style canvasses over the bed.

Storage space is good, but not cavernous.

The duplex suite was spacious downstairs with a huge daybed, and a door leading outside to the large patio area and balcony - but it's worth pointing out this was overlooked by the property opposite - a potential minus point if privacy is an issue to you whilst catching the glorious Spanish sun.

Upstairs via a tight corner staircase we felt the bedroom area was somewhat cramped when compared to the airy feel of lower floor of the duplex. As is the style the bathroom is a wet area within the bedroom area, and yes, the enclosed WC (mirrored glass door) is right next to the bath area so those not too comfortable sharing the ablutions of their travelling companion may want to bear this in mind if selecting this hotel.

A definate plus point was that the room was cleaned daily and was spotless both on the initial arrival and our return to it each afternoon.

Food wise there is a great Tapas bar on site which is part of the "tapasbar" chain, the bar itself serves the breakfast buffet included in the room rate. The selection is adequate for hot food but their pastries and sweet doughnuts being particularly notable for their quality. Dinner is highly recommended too - good value.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the breakfast staff are a bit miserable and take ages to clear dirty tables, but since the breakfast is "on the house" so to speak it's not the end of the world.

One final word of caution. The area is lively and noisy, and it seemed that the noise amplified upward, so if you are thinking of getting to bed before 2am, you will be kept awake till 5am when things quieten down. If staying in the duplex best to bring earplugs or alternatively drink lots of Rioja !

I do want to stress that as a footnote we stayed an extra night in a standard double on the first floor (room 101), and found this much quieter than the Duplex on the 4th / 5th floors. May be worth asking for rooms ending 01 or 02 if sleep before 3/4am is needed.

Our top tip - a brillant Tapas Bar across the road called Vinoteca Barbechera will keep you fed and watered if you are on a budget.

  • Liked — The great design - very individual
  • Disliked — lack of soundproofing on the Duplex room windows

This is a new, nice hotel, in Madrid old part of the city. We paid 117€uros for a double room, breakfast included, and think it is a little bit pricey.

If i could get it for 80/90 €uros I would go again, for sure, but for 117 euros I think you can get something better.

Location is grat if you like old Madrid and Tapas

What a lovely hotel...well recommended. Reception staff very helpful and pleasant.
Clean, boutique style, very fashionable and modern.
we had a duplex room... amazing...on two floors with a large garden terrace overlooking the square. Decorated with shrubs, plenty of outdoor seating and sun loungers on the terrace by the side of the small plunge pool.
Rooms them selves were lovely...large sitting room with amazingly large sofa's, plasma tv, c.d, table and seating, minibar. Lovely lighting and decor.Bedroom and bathroom upstairs...large bed, great lighting, lots of electronic blinds etc etc. All positives about the accommodation. Well placed hotel, nearest metro, Sol.
Breakfast in adjoining tapas bar/cafe. Lovely range of food in buffet, can be a little busy if all dine at once and the staffing levels don't change. Lovely scrambled eggs!
No complaints about the hotel at all.
Would definately stay there again without hesitation...well worth the money!
Tip...taxi's expensive from airport, can be 40 Euro's but the metro is so easy and well signed from the airport, (I think it was terminal 2, but am forgetting already, but it is well signed). It took us about 40 mins and only cost 1 Euro. We had to change three times, but they were all connecting tubes...no problem!
As for Madrid, it is a pleasant city with lots of old buildings...the madrid vision bus tour is a must...20 Euro's for 2 days. There are lots of beggars with deformaties around the main squares, which is sad. On the whole a very pleasant stay.

Great location near bars etc. Do not have a room on the outside of the hotel. The double glazing does not work and they party until 4am every night. Noise is terrible. air conditioning not brilliant.
Very clean and modern. Water rather than apples would have been a good idea. Staff were really helpful. English was reasonable.
The restaurant where you have breakfast was disappointing. It was dirty and the staff were very sullen. Breakfast itself was good.
Would recommend.

We spent two nights at the RM Alicia in mid-March. The location is superb, and so much in the heart of things that when we saw our first floor junior suite we were worried about potential noise and lack of privacy. But no cause for concern - a rather too sophisticated set of electrically controlled blinds covered up the vast bank of floor to ceiling windows. A stylish, comfortable and spacious room, and great value. Reception very helpful, too. Only one downside - the breakfast included in the rate was at the adjoining cafe / tapas bar (under separate ownership, I think), but service there was unacceptably slow and off-hand.

thoroughly enjoyed out stay in this perfectly located small hotel but our visit was spoilt by the noise coming from the square at night as most people do not seem to go to bed until well after our normal bedtimes! The double glazing is insufficient to block out external noises.

The breakfast was well presented and fresh, however, the restaurant staff were surly and lazy - tables left uncleared etc. The spanish certainly seemed to get preferable treatment!

Overall a great place to stay, reception staff were very helpful and suggested good places to eat, drink etc. and the location was perfect.

The trip on the metro from the airport is extremely easy and we would recommend attempting it - it only costs 1 euro!
