“Charming hotel by the Plaza Mayor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012 via mobile

The hotel is quite lovely from the outside, at least for me who loves old structures. Despite its age, the building is really maintained and the rooms though more hi tech compliments the overall feel of the place. It is literally a few steps away from the Plaza Mayor and for its price, I must admit it is quite a bargain. Lots of restaurants surrounding the area so you'll never run out of food options. Will definitely stay in the hotel again in my nexr visit to Madrid.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on our way back from our trip to North Africa. We booked a family room as we had 2 adults and 2 teens. The family room we were given when we checked in was on the 4th floor and had a sloped ceiling. It felt like we were sleeping in a cave and if you didn't bend down when you walked around you would hit your head. It made us feel very claustrophobic. They really shouldn't be selling that as a room. We went to the front desk and complained. They told us we could switch rooms but not until the 2nd night. When we went to the front desk the next morning to switch rooms the front desk clerk told us we had to pack every thing and he didn't know when another room would be available. He told us we had to bring our luggage downstairs and he would lock it up with other guests luggage in little area in the lobby. It didn't feel very safe having our luggage with other guests luggage as anyone could pick up ours when they picked up theirs. When we made a deal of it another family room magically became available. The family room we received was better with a normal ceiling.
1. The bunk bed in the family room- My teen daughter who slept in the top bunk had to climb the ladder to get there. It didn't seem very secure. As she climbed the ladder it swung around and didn't stay put which could cause an injury. I had to hold it so she didn't fall.
2. The bathroom- As previous reviewers have said the bathrooms have a frosted door which doesn't give you a feeling of privacy. There is no bath tub which there should be for a 4 star. The shower head is very nice but there is a opening in the shower area with no door which makes it impossible to take a shower without getting the whole bathroom wet.
3. Breakfast- breakfast was good with fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt, pastries, etc. There was a lot of pork. We don't eat pork so we just didn't eat that part.

The hotel is in a great location if you want to be in a place to walk around. If you don't have a lot of time we recommend the tour bus. We took that and it was very worth it. You see more than if you try to do it on your own. You can get off at various stops and get back on whenever you feel like it. If you compare this hotel to a 4 star hotel in the US there are definitely not the same standards. But, we would stay here again for the convenience of the location and a family room which it doesn't seem is easy to find in Madrid unless you stay at a Petit Palace.

Room Tip: If you book a family room make sure they don't give you the one with a sloped ceiling if you don...

This hotel is located right in the center of the city and is walking distance to a lot of fun stuff in La Latina, Sol, Gran Via, Paseo del Prado etc.
The metro is about 4 mins away and so getting to and from the airport is easy.
The rooms are a bit small, but you're in the middle of the city!
Great wifi and nice staff. Can't go wrong with this choice.

We found the hotel very comfortable and ideally placed to explore central Madrid. Although not easy to find (ask the taxi driver) the hotel proved to be a good choice for a stop over in Madrid. Our room was very comfortable, if rather snug, with a glass partitioned bathroom/toilet containing a power shower which, though rather more complex to operate than my hifi at home, proved excellent. Staff were extremely helpful. The huge plus is the hotel's proximity to Plaza Mayor (2 minutes walk) with its excellent open air restaurants, range of shops and the many performance artistes seeking your euros. We booked ahead so paid less than a third of the published prices and we did not have the breakfast which, at 18 euros per person seemed excessive. The cafe around the corner was fine for a third of the price. An ideal situation to explore central Madrid.

So surprised by the good reviews, yes the location was amazing, but that was all. The beds were hard as a rock and they only gave you a thin brown blanket as the top sheet. Our room- a family room, was just a room , no doors, and the one wall was a frosted glass walls. The bathroom door was a swinging glass door. My kids could play peek-a boo, I see you, through the sides of the door. 4 stars it is not!!!
The greatest thing was the shower jets, but bathroom had peeling paint on the ceiling and mold in the corners on the floor of the shower. The computer in our room did not work the 1st 2 days and when it did, it was very slow. So you pay for the location.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room first.

The location of this hotel is perfect, between Plaza del Sol and Plaza Mayor and in walking distance of good areas for eating and drinking. Sol is also served well by the Metro and easy to navigate from. We had a ground floor room so were worried that it may be noisy as backed onto a street but the double glazing worked and we didn't hear a thing. The buffet breakfast is fantastic and in a lovely setting. Good choice of hot and cold foods with juices and hot drinks, plenty of space. The staff were good, typically Madrid and not overly friendly but you'll see that's how everyone is in the City! Overall, good value, great location and a nice hotel.

Perfect location for a stay in Madrid at 20m away from the Plaza Mayor. Nicely decorated hotel with big enough rooms. Only negative point: The rooms need more thorough cleaning: A lot of dust webs on the ceiling and a mouldy ceiling in the shower are not acceptable for a 4-star hotel.
