“clean, friendly, well located”

Petit Palace Embassy

Jul 19, 2007

Stayed here while taking a week's worth of language classes at Elemadrid (great, small, friendly language school within walking distance of this hotel. Would definitely recommend.)

Hotel's rooms were small, but clean, sleek and modern. Staff was very chic, but friendly and very patient as I stumbled through just-learned Spanish. The food was excellent, but very very expensive (and I say this as a New Yorker.) Worth it only if it's late or if you just don't have the energy to go out.

There's a teeny little bar with a tv and a friendly staff. It's right in front of the main staircase to the guest rooms (they also have an elevator) so many people will have a drink before they go up and chat with fellow travellers.

I think the Petit Palace chain considers itself primarily a business hotel, and that's how it feels. I'd absolutely stay again for business or for classes, but I might look for more character if it was a romantic vacation.

One odd thing I noticed was that my king size bed ws two twin beds pushed together. Not sure if it was a last minute thing they set up or if that's how all their kings are arranged. Again, ok for a solo business traveller, but would have been a problem on more romantic trip.

My boyfriend booked this hotel for us when visiting a friend living in Madrid. (Conveniently, the English language school is opposite!)

Lobby and stairwell very nice, and had a very pleasant, decently sized room on the first floor. This was overlooking the main road, but very little noise.

Room itself had laptop with internet (little too useful when boyfriend wants to check the football scores...), nice sized bed, wardrobe and handy safe. No tea/coffee making facilities, and very little storage space in the bathroom - designer 'bowl' sink and teeny shelf, so make up bag always inevitably full of water. Fabulous shower with nozzles all the way up the wall - useful if you don't want to wash your hair.

Only real negative is that the bathroom is actually part of the bedroom, with a glass partition surrounding it. Although you couldn't see in, you could basically hear everything. I think we're past worrying about that, but this wouldn't be a 'first romantic trip abroad' hotel! The orange accessories in the room do also scream 'Easyjet'.

Location fine, 1 block from tube. Area is quite upscale, so instantly wanted new chic wardrobe after seeing so many gorgeous Spaniards.

My family and I stayed at the PPE for 4 days (Nov. 19-23). The hotel was in a great location, near all major sites and shopping. We stayed in two hotel rooms. The rooms were clean and basic (Think IKEA). Each room had a laptop with internet access which was very convenient. I agree with the previous review regarding the service at the hotel. One of the receptionists was very obnoxious and rude. She was very unpleasant and provided little help. If having web access is a must than this hotel will suit your need. If not, stay somewhere else to seek better service.

“Nice and quiet”

Stylishly decorated hotel, small standard rooms but we got a good rate online with Opodo. Laptop in room is good but is squeezed onto the tiny table so if you wanted to do some serious work it wouldn't be very comfortable. Its very quiet, no noise of traffic, lifts or people in rooms - except for people in the corridor going back to their rooms. No bath but has an amazing Jet shower. Is fantastically placed if you're into designer shopping with every store you could possibly want located within a few streets and a short walk. Very close to the metro system. Don't bother with the hotel breakfast just round the corner is the local food market with fantastic busy, working cafes doing fresh, tasty food.

OK value for Madrid but with all the typical mistakes of Spanish hotels. No kettle to boil water in rooms, incomprehensible electrical gadgets (the aircon was probably ok but I couldnt work it out), little piles of dirt in the corners of bathrooms, abrupt receptionists with limited english who think you are trying to insult them when you are just trying to make some minor request. On the other hand the laptop in the room is great and avoids trawling around to find internet cafes. The location in an upscale neighbourhood is good if you don´t mind stepping out as a typical bleary eyed and bedragled tourist into a fashion parade. Breakfast is fine although when I ask for a black coffee for some reason they give you an expresso in a large cup rather than a normal american coffee. Overall not bad for Madrid with the provisos. For some reason they insisted I pay the whole bill in the middle of my stay when I just asked to see the account...only in Spain
