“Local colour and draught vermouth!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

Great place for an aperitifs & tapas across the Almudena Cathedral in the heart of historic Madrid.

Packed on Sundays, but you’ll always find standing space along its long bar. We’ve been here three times in the last few months with family and friends. And the service has always been friendly and efficient.

There’s also a small dining room at the back where you can sit, relax and enjoy a wide range of ‘tapas’ at reasonable prices.

On our last visit my wife and I stood at the bar and ordered 2 glasses of draft vermouth which came accompanied by tasty green olives and a small plate of pasta with squid….like with other reviewers, our bill was 5 euro!

“Tasty tapas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

We loved it when we asked for two glasses of white wine and, with it, came a sequence of side dishes (sardines on toast, potatoes in aioli sauce, cured olives, tortillas) that really constituted a dinner on their own. The waiter was efficient and very friendly and the cuenta came to the absurd total of... 5 euros!

“Great refresher stop in between sightseeing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013 via mobile

We happened to see this place on the way to visit El Palacio Real and, as a receptionist at a hotel recommended a nice glass of vermouth to warm our insides, decided to stop back after visiting the palace to see if we couldn't brush off a bit of the chilly day. The waiters were very friendly in handing us our glasses, and as we sat down at a little bar by the window looking out at the cathedral and palace another waiter brought us some tapas gratis- a little bowl of green olives and two pieces of potato quiche on bread. We first ate the tapas out of seeming obligation but it got better with each bite and we wanted more! In all, it was a very nice break to get out of the cold and crowds, relax our feet a moment, and for only 5 Euro! Best part, weren't nearly as cold for the rest of the day!

“Good beer and plenty of tapas to choose from”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2011

Part 3 of our tour around Madrid taverns included a short stop on this one. Although the staff wasn't that friendly, the beer was good and so were the tapas - what more do you want? :D

“We won't go back.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2010

While the location of this bar is lovely, across from the cathedral and down from the palace, the waiter for the outside tables was rude. Our Spanish companions were insulted and said this was the second time they had received such service; they will not return.
One of our party went inside (to use the toilets) and commented that the younger waiter seemed pleasant.
However a glass of vermouth, which is why we stopped, was 3.5euros when it is rarely more than 2 euros.
Location isn't everything. Next time we'll get our vermouth elsewhere and just sit in the garden outside the palace.
