“Okay, unless you're unlucky with the room”

The bathroom of the first room we got at Hotel Italia must have experienced the repeated flooding one of the earlier reviews described, since it had a very strong smell of mold in it. Looking at how the bathroom was constructed some kind of unwanted growth seemed inevitable, as I could see inside the wall through a crack between the wall and floor panels right in the corner towards which the floor happened to slant. The receptionist seemed surprised hearing about our problem, but it was clear that nobody with a normal sense of smell would be happy with that room - then again, it was a smoking room. ;o)

Second room was luckily better, and we had a nice stay for the rest of the week. Rooms were on the smallish side but clean, modern and very well insulated from the noise outside and in the other rooms (and I know this was not due to it being particularly quiet in either place). Hallway noise could be heard quite clearly, though. The breakfast offered pretty good variety and there was room for us both times we got up early enough to enjoy it. No piled up dishes in sight and refills arrived until very close to the end of the breakfast.

The location was good, we didn't feel unsafe at any hour. Half a dozen young women at a time were standing around offering their services right outside the hotel entrance pretty much 24 hours a day. Not threatening, but made us a bit uncomfortable at times.

If you get a good room it's a good stay, bearing in mind that a large part of the price is due to the location. Because of the state of the first room we got, I personally would not risk this hotel again, though.

We loved this hotel. We needed a triple room for a college daughter staying with us and the room was huge. The shower was invigorating. Balcony is small but you can step out and take a photo of the street below. The internet allowed us to unwind after a day out and about. We used the subway due to its ease of use. Literally walked out the door and you were on your way to any location. Only minor downside was the class of people right outside the door. They really did not bother you but it was a shame that it seemed to bring this great hotel down a little bit. It seemed all English speaking people there during our visit and the staff spoke English very well. No communication problem for us. The staff were very nice. Television is only National Geographic in English.

“Great Locatio”

The best thing about this hotel is the location. When we got out at the Gran Via metro station it was like being in the middle of Oxford street- it's not quiet (so if that's what you want look else where) but is very lively and around Xmas time was beautifully decorated. It is 5 minutes walk to Sol and then another few minutes to the main square so the location was perfect. I actually found Plaza Santa Ana (about 12-15 mins walk) to be the prettiest and liveliest location for restuarants, bars and clubs and so would probably stay there next time. The hotel looks good - it looks modern and quite plush. The first impression of the room is good. But there were some downsides. The major one being that the bathroom did not have a proper door! It was glass and did not close properly (a feature in all rooms) which I found a bit odd. Secondly, in our first room the shower kept getting flooded (something someone said in an earlier tripadvisor review so maybe its a problem with the type of showers they have) so we asked to be moved. Ask for room 510 its bigger than most and has a balcony. The rooms are quite small but have mirrors cleverly placed to make it look larger. I actually found the room too modern looking but it depends what you like. It is not the kind of hotel where you would necessaily spend time in other than to sleep. The breakfast was good and served till 11am. Overall this hotel is great if you just want an excellent base for exploring the city - which is what we did - and if you get a good deal then it's brilliant. Not the kind of hotel you would want to spend too much money on though as there are plenty others that look better in as good a location.

We loved the location (few steps away from the metro station Gran Via). We could walk everywhere because it is very central.

it is quiet enough and clean and comfortable. Free internet in the room.

Be ready: nobody seems to speak English in madrid. Luckily I am Italian so we understood each other quite easily.

We thought the Hotel staff and Hotel were very nice and above what i expected. The room was quite large and the shower was a hydro shower with about 5 jets. Ideal for waking you up in the morning after a late night/early morning in the clubs and pubs. It is in a great location on the Gran Via and we had an unbelievable view from our balcony of all the hustle and bustle. We felt it was in a safe location, although we did not venture around the back of the hotel,it has been said it was a bit rough around there,so we took no chances. In summary tho,i liked the hotel,it was very clean and i'd definitely stay there again.
