My boyfriend and i stayed here in June 06 for 4 nights (before taking the overnight train to Barcelona). The hotel is located about 300m from Puerta Del Sol.
It was clean and tidy.
The room was small, as was the ensuite bathroom but perfect for you if all you want is somewhere to lay your head at night. We had fresh sheets and towels everyday, there is also a tv in the room with a couple of english channels.
We were in the room right next to the reception desk - which i was initially a little concerned about due to noise - didn't hear a thing! You have to pay a little more for the airconditioning but it is worth it especially in the summer! Everything is a short distance from this hotel and there are lots of bars and restaurants on the doorstep if you don't fancy venturing to far from the hotel but the city itself had oudles of restaurants to go to.
The day that we left they were more than happy with us leaving our bags at the hotel as we went for a final day of sight seeing before we caught our train.
The staff speak english too and are very helpful recommending various attractions to see.
You have to be buzzed into the building at night (and sometimes during the day), the hotel is on the 2nd floor, but there is a lift. There is a step to get in the building and once in the hotel another step to contend with so may not be ideal for those in wheel chairs

I was at fault for booking this place without doing sufficient research. It was mentioned in a Brazilian travel magazine picked up at random.

As we were at the end of a three week trip traveling with one big suitcase each plus hand luggage, it was nearly impossible for both of us to be in the room at once unless one was in bed or in the tiny bathroom. They charged extra for air conditioning, which we needed.

Upon checking out after one night, we were told that we must pay for the three nights that were booked. It was a rip off.

In all fairness, the place was clean but for 69 Euros I thought it over priced.

Think about it twice before booking this Hostal.

We don't really want to give this hotel a bad review, because the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and the location was good - but the main purpose of a hotel is to give you a good night's sleep, and the Tijcal II just didn't.

The rooms (and hallways) were tiny, and we didn't sleep well any of the three nights we stayed - the bed just wasn't at all comfortable. The other problem was noise. The walls were thin enough to hear when someone else was talking (in reception and other rooms), and the doors slamming was like two pots hit together right by your ears.

Still, if you can sleep practically anywhere, and you want to be in the thick of Madrid - this may be your place.

As others have said, the rooms at the end of the corridoor are tiny. I had to shuffle things around each day and again at night in order to get things out of the suitcase, which would only fit against the wardrobe next to the bed. A very tight squeeze and bathroom same story. Toilet jammed in right against the door - but then 162 Euros for 3 nights is ok for where it is. Don't bother with the breakfast, there is a great cafe right next door that has wonderful coffee and toast. On the third night I was moved up the corridoor to a much larger room with a window that opened out onto a 'garden' of plastic flowers - nice touch! There is a lift to help get bags upstairs, and the location is great - lots of great restaurants nearby. Overal pretty good value for money, although the size of the room does kind of take your breath away!

Good location, clean place, good service. However, the room was so small that it rather felt like a cell! To make matters worse, the room's window was extremelly small, could not be fully opened and faced a wall! At the end of our 5 day stay we were sofocated.
