Just returned from a 3 day break to Madrid (3-5th April) and stayed at the High Tech Avenida. The location is fantastic. About a 30 second walk from Callao metro station, just turn right at the Zahara bar/restaurant on Gran Via. Slap bang in the middle of everything. The metro is brilliant, so would recommend getting it from the Aiport instead of a taxi as a taxi is about 40 euros each way and the metro is 1 euro per journey! Takes about an hour door to door. (including the 20 minute walk from Terminal 1 and the metro station at Terminal 2).
We stayed in room 331, please ask for a different room if you get this one! The room itself isn't too bad, a bit small if you're staying longer than 3 nights, the decor is really nice (think Habitat), the showers amazing. But it's just the fact that a) there's no natural light as it's at the back of the hotel, b) the pipes for the showers and toilets run by the side of the bed so you hear a constant flush of water and c) it's sooooooo noisy! It's opposite the cleaners room so there are constantly doors banging and unfortunately, whilst we were there we were trapped between a large group of students who screamed, laughed, shouted and played knock down ginger on our door for about an hour - this was all at 3am! So didn't sleep very well. But, this may not happen to you, so you might get lucky.
But the location of the hotel really does make up for everything else. We didn't have breakfast there as there was an abundance of places to eat just outside, so can't rate the food on offer there.
Be sure to try Churros with hot chocolate for breakfast though, it's amazing! And there's a great Irish bar called Moores just off Playa Mayor which gives you a taste of home if you need it.

Modern, clean but small double room and bathroom. A bit too hot unless you keep the window slightly ajar, a/c doesn't really work. Excellent breakfast. Helpful staff although they don't speak alot of English. There is a computer with Internet connection in the reception area. Good location - Gran Via and Puerta del Sol is just a stonethrow away and, the Callao and Gran Via metro is not far.

Stayed in a Family Room with 2 toddlers.
PRO's
The room was cleaned thoroughly each day, in fact the whole hotel was spotless during our stay.
Others have complained about the breakfast however I felt that it wasn't as poor value for money as some suggested. 8 Euro's seemed steep, but all the fruit (sliced) was fresh, eggs, continental meats, bacon, cereals, pastries, cheeses etc were all of excellent quality and it provided us with a good start to the day. I accept there probably is cheaper, but I couldn't be bothered to go and find it.
The bathroom was a good size and well stocked. The shower worked well, as others have suggested, though ours had a couple of the knobs missing which took a bit of getting used to.
The reception staff whilst not the most charismatic, were very helpful when you needed them. I quite like the fact they don't fall over themselves to greet you each time you walk through the door.
It's very cheap.
It's quite well situated for the main sights.

CON's
The beds provided were comfortable, but we all ended up sleeping (all 4 of us) in the twin beds (pushed together) as the bunkbeds provided were unsuitable for our kids. We took travel cot sides with us anticipating the need for them but either end of the beds were open and children were at risk of falling out. In addition the top bunk was far too high from the floor for any child under 10, I would suggest.
One of the lights by the side of the bed had no cover on and the wiring was exposed, our 2 yo found this hazard irresistable and made a beeline for it at every opportunity.
The noise from the street at the front of the building is noticeable until 3am, but didn't stop us from sleeping through it, however the noise from within the hotel is awful. There seems to be no soundproofing at all, we heard someone packing up their suitcase one morning!
There are a few family rooms, I believe, and we stayed in 338, beware though if you have a buggy/pushchair, then the lift will take you at a squeeze to the third floor but you will still have to climb a set of 10 or so stairs to get to this room, this was a pain!!

Overall I've given it a 4 rating because the pro's outnumbered the con's and for what you get I did think it very reasonably priced.

My sister, my boyfriend and I stayed at High Tech Avenida in September 2005. We paid 86euros/night for a triple with shower - special rate from the internet. Breakfast was NOT included.

We initially had problems finding this place as there were 2 other High Tech Hotels in the same area.

Pros
- great location; short walk from the main shopping areas and opposite a flamenco bar/restaurant
- free internet via cable (hotel will provide one if u leave a 20 euro deposit which u will get back when the cable is returned) - though it connects and disconnects fairly frequently making it fairly slow. I assume its to prevent people from downloading?
- good sized room for three people; i think its actually meant for 4 as the single bed was the bottom bunk of a foldaway wall bunk bed.
- windows were double glazed. We had a view of the main street and when you opened it you realized how noisy it actually is.
Cons
- hallways were abit dirty on the way to our room - though for me that's being picky
Other things worth mentioning
- the shower was interesting - it will give u a hydro massage if you can figure out how it works, tho be warned - i think i had started a steam sauna thing and it got really hot! not for young kids to play with; the door to the shower/toilet was glass! therefore absolutely no privacy. everytime my sister had to use the shower my boyfriend had to hide in a corner
- staff are friendly overall, but very limited english (or just the ones we encountered)

overall, i would stay in this hotel again. great location!

Disappointing exterior and pokey reception area. Hugely helpful reception staff . Nice modern bedroom and bathroom - small but then we are in a capital city and this was far superior to London hotels for the same price. Good value for money.

We made the mistake of walking along Gran Via at about 9.30 at night to go to a restaurant. We were surprised by the number of 'gangs' of men out and about on Gran Via - mostly of Eastern European origin and we did feel intimidated by both them and some somewhat aggressive begging. Police were high profile and we were thankful for that.

We took taxis for the rest of our stay - highlights being the Royal Palace and the Plaza Major.

It isn't the hotel's fault but I would not stay here again - if I went back to Madrid I would stay nearer Plaza Major where the area has a differnt feel to it altogether.
