“There are no complaints except for a softer bed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

Hotel Plaza Mayor was where we stayed at the end of our long 6 week holiday of Morocco, Portugal and Spain. It was a great location and close to the subway, plentiful cafes, bars and restaurants and some sites. Our room was on the 4th floor on the corner with space and a great view. The area is a bit noisy but the double glazing sorts that out! The staff are friendly and helpful. We were made to feel most welcome and she was able to advise us where to go and how to get there! They have free Wi-fi, though it can be iffy in the rooms, and a very adequate breakfast buffet. There is no issue getting taxis right out the front. There is a great Hammam a few doors up the road - great for a couple of hours bathing, relaxing and massage. We enjoyed our stay at this well located, clean hotel, with friendly and competent staff and the only negative is we would like a softer bed.

Yes it is in an excellent location, easy to find, clean and the staff were very good. However our Superior Twin Room was tiny, the bathroom was also very small and a bit dated. The breakfast was quite poor with not a lot of choice even though we were there at 9.00am. We paid 91 Euros a night for a 3 night break, which may be OK for Madrid, but if we were to go back we would probably look for a different hotel around the Plaza Mayor. There are lots of choices.
We probably felt the word Superior certainly did not apply to our room

Overall a nice hotel with everything one would expect, and with an excellent location. Also, very reasonably priced considering the location. Service was good overall. Room size was OK - not very large, but reasonable especially considering that most people staying here are going to be out all day. But the key is location - makes it very convenient and easy for sightseeing and enjoying Madrid.

My satisfaction with the Madrid Hotel Plaza Mayor can be summed up in one word: Location! I do not believe there is a better hotel value in this low to medium price range in central Madrid than the Hotel Plaza Mayor. The lounge area is very small, with only two or three semi-comfortable chairs. They only serve coffee during breakfast hours, but do have an occasionally operable vending machine.

The rooms are quite small, yet provide a reasonable amount of comfort for a traveler who spends only the minimum nighttime hours in it. The breakfast served was fine, but the hours (8:00 am) are not good for me because I was making day trips by train and needed to be out of the hotel fairly early.

We stayed at this hotel two separate times during our visit to Madrid. As others have mentioned, great location to the Sol Metro stop and many other sights. The rooms were very clean and neat the the breakfast was the best during our stay in Spain. Breakfast included hot eggs, bacon, sausage, cold cuts, cheese and the usual breads, pastries, cereals, and fruits. The night time desk clerk, George, was very helpful, polite, and professional. Great price, great location, great breakfast what more can you ask?

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Plaza Mayor for 5 nights in early October 2012 in Room 503 (with a great view of the small plaza below). We found this small hotel to be charming, cozy, very modern, and well situated a short 2-minute walk from Plaza Mayor (one of the main squares in Madrid). Ours was a "Superior Double," seemingly the only room on the 5th floor that has 3 windows and is a corner room. (The rest of the 5th floor rooms seem to have one window each -- if I interpreted correctly the fire escape map posted on the back of the door that depicts the layout of the rooms.) The room was very clean, house-cleaning services excellent, water pressure in the shower excellent, the mattress firm (but comfortable). One (for me) BIG plus that oddly is not cited on the hotel's website: There's an in-room, free safe (at least in our room). So, Why not 5 stars? There were some minor annoyances (many of which seem to be petty money-saving choices on the part of the hotel): no Kleenex in the room, waste-paper basket only in the bathroom, anorectic-sized soap, shampoo in foil containers, mediocre lighting which made it very hard to read (Note: the lighting in the bathroom was excellent, and a photo on the hotel's website shows different reading lamps attached to the walls of a seeming different room, so perhaps the lighting is better in other rooms). A double-bed with two people suggests there would be one pillow for each person? Wrong. There was one long, thin pillow to be shared by two people. (There was an additional long, thin pillow in the closet, so when used one atop the other they could prop up one's head adequately for reading.)Then there were some minor annoyances that perhaps just reflect the hotel being small and/or location: No bureau drawers to hold clothing, likely reflecting the modest size of the room (the small closet does have hangers for clothing, but the safe takes up part of one of the shelves in there and the top shelf holds an extra pillow); since this corner room overlooks the small plaza, there is noise from pedestrians and musicians that the windows do not adequately block (I have very sensitive hearing, but use of foam ear plugs FULLY worked, blocking what noise did come through the window, allowing for a good night's sleep, so splurge on a pair of ear plugs or ask for a room not overlooking the square.) Overall, despite the minor annoyances (again, as I said, many of which could be eliminated if the hotel wanted to, e.g., no Kleenex), we loved this hotel, that it was located in the heart of the old, historic district and very convenient to most of the key points of interest, and the price was right (110 euros weekends, 100 euros week nights (plus 10% tax, up from 8% as of September 1st). Would we stay here again? Yes, yes, yes!

This was an amazing location and really close to Plaza Mayor, Plaza Santa Cruz and Plaza del Sol. However, the walls were super thin and very noisy. Our neighbor sneezed and I thought it was my husband in the same room. You can hear everything, including toilet flushes, showers, people walking by, etc.

They have free wifi and the staff are really nice. The price was really reasonable, considering the location.
