“Horribly rude”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2010

Staff goes out of their way to be rude. The woman who checked me in couldn't speak a single word of English and would give me attitude or curse me in Spanish when I wouldn't understand what she said. Worse, she would make fun of my Spanish whenever I'd make a mistake. No one deserves this kind of disrespect.

This hostel is located at Sol but in a quiet street around the corner, which is quite convenient. They claim to have had it renovated, however, they forgot one half: My room had a fancy flat-screen tv and painted walls but they forgot about the old (!) mattress and the mold in the shower. The single rooms face the lightwell, which is not very pleasant. However, what bothered me the most was the unfriendly staff (with a few exceptions). The walls are very thin so that you can hear (and be heard) quite clearly all over the place. Last but not least I found it quite worrying that you had to leave your key in a box that was accessible to everybody. They said it was being monitored by a camera - but you never know. One more positive aspect: The room and the hostel in total were clean.
To sum it up: If you are looking for a central, quite reasonable (I paid EUR 45 for a single in November) clean hostel, needing neither service nor inhouse food, this could be the one.

Sorry, but the location its absolutely superb, 50metres to puerta del sol and plaza mayor!! The hostal its quite good, but simple, it is only a floor, with no services to have lunch, but who cares?? there are hundred of restaurants on madrid, from tapas to indian! The room as wireless internet, ask for the password! The staff at first was strange because you need to leave the key there, its 24h cctv! and worked just fine, because nothing bad happen! The room is simple, but ok! The bathroom could be upgrade, but there is HOT water, despite other reviews! I recommend a sushi place called NIPO, ask the staff, in the hostal there is a place with a lot of cards, publiciting restaurants, bars and trips!!

1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2008

My husband and I stayed in a hotel near the Castilla II on our first visit to Madrid in June. Afterwards, we wanted to travel all over Andalucia (south of Spain) and come back for one night to Madrid. Our first hotel was fully booked for this date so we looked a bit around. Castilla II was like 5 minutes walking from our hotel so we went there to try and book a room for the abovementioned night. The guy at the reception told us that there was a room available and that he booked it for us. He took the number of our credit card as well. He refused to give us a written confirmation, so we left thinking that they sure are honest people.

Well, after visiting Andalucia, we came back to Madrid and to Castilla II in particular, for the night. Here , we were really surprised when the guy from the reception (not the same guy we saw the first time) told us tat we have no reservation and that the hotel was fully booked. He looked at his computer and showed us that there was no reservation on our name! He looked very strange, ignoring our reservation, not having any reaction and not being surprised by this incident at all. Nothing changed in his reaction even after our explanation and after showing him the handwriting of his collegue on the hotel card (his collegue had handed to us the hotel card on which he had written the date of our reservation). The guy very simply and calmly responded that the card and the handwriting do not mean anything!! So we left and had to search for another hotel for the same night, we found one late in the night.

To begin with, this was a very inappropriate way to treat clients, very impolite and irrespectful.

That is not all! The next morning, we found out that Castilla II had charged the room for one night enenthough we hadn't stayed there! Sowe headed again the Castilla II to tell them to give us back our money (or cancel the operation). We had to argue and fight in order to get our money back!!

Less than an average hotel, a dishonest behaviour, a very bad service, lying to clients, taking unrightfully money from clients.. so it is up to you to decide whether you would say there or not.. But we surely won't.

Great little hostal just off Calle Mayor and in between Plaza Mayor and Plaza Sol and walking distance from the Huertas area. Fantastic location and great value for money. Rooms are basic and functional but a good size and very clean, perfect for a city break. Only slight negative is the noise from the traffic and passers by below but a pair of ear plugs do the trick, but you are in central Madrid after all. Reception are friendly as well. Great little bakery and cafe nearby for breakfast:- La Mallorquina, wonderful cakes and waiters. For a fun night out try La Negra Tomasa in Huertas which is a great little Cuban restaurant and bar with live music and fab mojitos. Botanical Gardens are wonderful and relaxing and for a trip out of the city a visit to Toledo is definitely worth it.

I had reservations for the hostal castilla ii and when i got there they took me across the street to hostal castilla iii. I actually thought they were very equal in regards to their facilities. Castilla iii a bit more modern. The rooms are kind of small but have basic amenities and are comfortable. VERY VERY VERY clean, and the bathroom was very nice for a hostal. The rooms were always very warm. The best aspect of this place is its very centric location, you cannot be more in the middle of everything than here. Enjoy your stay.

Right where you need to be! In the center of the most fascinating city on the Iberian Peninsula, Hostal Castilla II is my wholehearted recommendation. Safe, secure, well appointed, and private. I was able to go anywhere I needed from this excellent base of operations. My sister went with her boyfriend and then I went with my girlfriend. Ideal for any traveler.
