La Tavernetta serves up the scintilating savors of Sicily and Sardinia in the centre of Spain. (OK, make that Madrid.) The restaurant is small, basic but decent. The basement has a more intimate atmosphere probably better suited to small groups of friends, families etc. Ground floor has mostly tables for two which are shoe-horned in but this hardly matters once you start eating.
The food is superb. I recommend the pasta with soft-shelled crab - utterly delicious and something hard to resist with each return visit. But everything we have eaten here has been superb, from the fragrant leg of lamb scented with herbs and braised (in wine?) to the wonderful caponata. Servings are quite generous and prices are very moderate for this quality and quantity. Great lunchtime menu deals make it a very affordable option for mid-week lunches too.
Service is friendly and attentive. The restaurant seems to be open most of the day so, although a booking is probably advisable, if you can be flexible about the time, it's likely they'll be able to fit you in. Go there once and you'll find yourself going back regularly when you fancy something a bit different. Far and away the best Italian I have tried in Madrid.
