“Excellent stay in Madrid”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

We had a great stay at the Gran Melia Howel during a recent trip to Madrid. The location was ideal - walkable to many subway lines, the "Golden triad" of museums and a lot of great shopping. The rooms were quite large and well-decorated. The service at this hotel was top-notch - from the housekeeping twice daily to the doorman to the concierge. Everyone was extremely gracious and helpful and humoured my broken Spanish. We would defi.nitely come back.

Very comfortable, quiet room, very convenient to different metro lines (right int he middle), which makes it easier to move about Madrid. Nice semi-residential area. Good restaurant, very nice outside seating area.

We came to Madrid for a 50th birthday celebration and took a chance on this hotel. This hotel did not disappoint. It is of a high standard, but without the snootiness. The staff are very friendly and courteous. The rooms are well appointed and quiet and decorated to a very high standard. The shops, museums, bars restaurants are all within walking distance, so overall this hotel was an excellent choice. Recommended!

The hotel is conveniently located in the center of Madrid only about 20 minutes by taxi from the airport.

From the putside the building looks rather dated as so many in Madrid.
Nevertheless the interior is nice and very "traditional" cozy.
If you are looking for a modern stylish hotel, this might not be your choice.

Greetings were friendly at the entrance as well as reception and a speedy check-in was provided.

The first impression of the room was very good and cozy but in general it was too dark for my taste.
Even during the day I had to use all possible lights switched on, as the small window with heavy curtains does not really let any daylight in. The room was low floor and out on a (quiet) narrow side alley. This did not allow much daylight anyway.

The bathroom was small but large enough for one person. The toilet part is definitely too small. Within that tiny space a toilet and a bidet are squeezed-in which would not allow a person with longer legs than me to sit without touching the bidet.

Breakfast was a good selection of all kinds of fresh food but the served coffee is rather tasteless. I recommend to order espresso instead of coffee.

For tourists that have a tight schedule it is good to know that just around the hotel is a bus stop for the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus.

In general I would not rate this hotel at the high end of five star hotels but rather on the basic 5 star ones.
The overall experience was good although not at all outstanding what might be expected from a hotel belonging to the "Leading Hotels" group.

This is a conveniently located hotel to upscale shopping on Calle Serrano and walking distance (about a mile) to the three great museums of Madrid. We were upgraded to a room with a sitting area, and a very interesting patio with your own exercise bike and personal jacuzzi. If the weather had been warmer, this would have been a very nice luxury. Room was comfortable and the double panes windows made it a quiet stay.

Some things annoyed us. Never could get the air to circulate so was very dry (as Madrid is normally). The bathroom shower is poorly designed so you can't help but get water everywhere. Breakfast was supposedly included in our rate but that was breakfast in what they call their Level 7 private lounge on the 7th floor. Breakfast was really second rate. Cold scrambled eggs, overdone, cold hard boiled eggs, tasteless cheese and yogurt, etc. we would have rather had breakfast in their dining room but that would have cost us. I tried to bring a cup of tea from Level 7 to my room but wasn't allowed. (Really?) The only good thing about Level 7 was it was open all day until 11pm and you could stop in for a cocktail gratis. Otherwise, it was a waste and we ended up going out for breakfast elsewhere.

We may try the Ritz next time we are in Madrid given its directly across the street from the Prado.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade and insist on breakfast in the dining room instead of their Level 7 as part of yo...

Gran Melia Fenix meets the baseline standard as a Leading Hotel of the World. I liked its location is the Salamanca neighborhood flush with some good food and shopping. The hotel is about 10-15 mins walk to the popular museums which was super handy. I think of this hotel as a junior Claridges in London one without all the pomp and circumstance. The hotel itself though has great old world charm. I'd stay at this hotel again and I'll share some details below good and bad so you can make your own decision:

*Pros: Again, it is a nice location in the Salamanca neighborhood. Gran Meliz Fenix has nice amenities like sweet sheets and towels that auto warm when you turn the shower on. The room is supplied with Clarins beauty products and the premium rooms are a nice size. Reliable wifi most of the time, and the hotel is kept up nicely, they keep it clean.

*Cons: The Red Level service is cheesy and a not worth much at all - so don't buy into it. Its expensive for what it is. The service in the hotel is basically all up rookie. They aren't very polished when it comes to handling customers, their requests and needs. In fact, the staff can be down right rude and unhelpful. There was a sufficient amount of chaos in this hotel as it related to staff coverage and knowledge about anything. I felt like my research helped them more than they helped us.

Gran Melia Fenix is a nice, small hotel with a nice clientele which I prefer over something like the Westin Palace up the street which is more commercial and busy and less special. If service is paramount to you, you might want to try elsewhere. But the lodging itself is nice.

Room Tip: Room 601 was so noisy we had to move

I've stayed in this hotel twice now on business. Both times I've been surprised by the small size of the room. Additionally the bathroom has the shower in the bath so you have to step into it. I get the impression that the top floor more expensive floors are great, but the remaining rooms are pretty average. The breakfast buffet is ok. The price of €170 (inc taxes) seems steep to me. However I've now stayed in a number of hotels in madrid and this is one of the better ones.
