My sister and I stayed here for 3 nights in the middle of June and were really impressed. The location is superb, just a few minutes walk from the main tourist areas and yet wonderfully quiet day and night. The staff were friendly and helpful and mostly spoke fairly good English. We had a good sized room which was really nice, with massive twin beds and a really good shower in the bathroom and the only downside was that the room was a bit dark and we had no idea what the weather was like outside as the window overlooked the internal courtyard. If I go back to Madrid I'd definetely stay here again but would probably request a room overlooking the main square. Oh, and the air conditioning in the room was brilliant, very important when it's in the high 30's outside.

My wfe and I, A daughter and granddaughter stayed at the Palacio San Martin for a week in early June. We were on a relaxed whirlwind visit (the latest of numerous visits) and found everything we wanted pleasantly available, not intrusive but there. The building is interesting, room very comfortable and clean, location excellent and close to what you want, the french door windows and balconies are especially good if you like french windows. I happen to start enjoying the day hearing the bells of the nearby St. Gimes church, really worth a visit. In short, if you are in Madrid to enjoy a stay, Palacio San Martin is a good place to work from. The young ladies in the front office are especially nice, and Avon Chocolatier around the corner is a good place to start out the day and to finish it. I hope they have rooms available when we visit Spain again.

Stayed from May 21-29, 2005. Shared a large corner room (314) with my niece. My parents' room was a little cramped (310). Both were comfortable and had balonies to the plaza. My mother found the bed hard her first night (the rest of us were very comfortable). Based on a review at this site I brought my own pillow, which was unnecessary - there were bolsters on the bed with an extra in the closet. The following were excellent: location; cleanliness; bathroom and shower; friendly and helpful staff; proximity to restaurants, cafes, historical sites, tourist bus, etc; air conditioning. Because of the close-by restaurants, Plaza Mayor, Chocolateria, etc. we cannot comment on the hotel's restaurant. The Plaza de San Martin was quiet, like a neighborhood plaza, and on the one night when it was active, closing the balcony door provided absolute quiet. Being next to the Convent of the Royal Descalceds was a definite advantage, as every taxi driver can identify it as a landmark. For tourists, there are three stops for the hop-on, hop-off bus within a block or two of the hotel. I will stay at this hotel again if I have the opportunity.
This hotel compares very favorably to another 4 Star Madrid hotel my parent and I stayed at two years ago. The location is unbeatable.

My husband, 12 year old niece and I just returned from 3 nights at the Intur Palacio San Martin - May 15, 16, 17. We had a very large 1st floor room with two balcony window/doors overlooking the square. I was very pleased with the location since it is both centrally located and QUIET. The room was clean and nicely appointed. The bathroom was large and the towels were great. The bathroom was a bit noisy but not really problematic (shower noise from other bathrooms sounded like it was in our bathroom). Breakfast was good but expensive (16 EU). Would try to eat elsewhere if had it to over again. Room was 136 EU (they said the higher rate was for the larger room needed because there were 3 of us). There was no extra charge to call the US using a pre-paid Sprint card The staff were helpful enough when asked but were not very proactive. Most spoke English well, but some did not. Very nice interesting staircase with elevator. Nice lobby, staff treated us very well one night when we had a drink there before dinner. Over all a good hotel that I would stay in again.
