I came to Madrid on a two day business trip and chose this hotel because of its proximity to my meetings. The area is a posh part of Madrid which nevertheless has lots of shops, restaurants and cafes at all levels. There is a market nearby, around which are some typical inexpensive restaurants; but there are also very trendy bars and restaurants near swanky shoe and jewelry stores. The crowd in the streets is a real mix, and makes people watching from one of the outdoor cafes fun.
I arrived a bit late (close to 9PM) and was greeted by courteous, efficient and almost obsequious staff, who offered to explain the neighborhood to me. In spite of a fitness center being listed in the amenities, they say they do not have one, and I was told that I could go for a run in the nearby park. Fair enough, as it is a lovely looking park, but that is not a fitness center.
The lobby looks a bit worse for wear with a stained carpet, and is not grand by any stretch of the imagination. There is a small sitting area where drinks and coffee are served, and the entrance is almost cramped.
My room had a lovely view of a wall twenty feet away. However, I was mostly interested in quiet and a good night's sleep, so the view did not matter to me.
The decoration is clean and sober, although rather dark and heavy (browns and dark greens with monochrome black and white prints and dark wood furniture).
The room was very comfortable, with a king sized bed with two night tables, a sofa, a table with chairs, a comfortable desk and plenty of storage space. The bathroom was elegant and ample, with a separate shower and bath, and with the toilet separated by a glass door. Equipped with robes, lots of towels and plenty of toiletries, the bathroom was perhaps the most luxe part of the room.
I only saw one housekeeping staff member during my two day stay, who came in to turn down the bed. She was courteous and respectful, and went about her work efficiently. The room had been made while I was away and it was very clean when I returned.
There was a plate with four gratuitous apples (not quite a fruit plate, but an attempt) for my arrival, and chocolates on the pillow each night.
There is a minimal room service menu, which I did not order from. Items include simple sandwiches, a fried fish and spanish omelette. I also skipped the 27 euro breakfast (there are plenty of cafes around the corner with excellent coffee and breakfast). There is a tiny little safe and a minibar which I did not use, but which looked well stocked. There is no iron or coffee or tea maker in the room. The TV is ample and can be shut away in an armoire.
I give it an average rating because it really does not give what one would expect when hearing "five stars" , although if these amenities were in a four star hotel, it would be a very pleasant experience. In reality, I would say it is good, but TripAdvisor says 3 is average and 4 is very good, so I picked average. However, I think this is a decent hotel to stay at for the price charged, in a great part of town.
If you want to have a view, ask for it.
