Great modern hotel, the location is good. Very clean. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Gym/fitness suite a little bit of a let down. The bed room was a pleasant surprise, pretty large and well equipped. The same applies for the bathroom. Would stay here again!

I stayed in this hotel for 5 nights for a business trip. The hotel is a bit old and cramped, but has one of the better locations of the major hotel chains I frequent (SPG/Marriott) and a pretty low rate (<100 euro/night). The service isn't great or bad, but simply "OK." The breakfast is pretty standard for hotels in Spain (a lot of ham/pork dishes, fruits and pastries) and not super impressive. The stairwell and elevators are very cramped as well. The rooms are decently sized with small bathrooms that can be annoying at times (the half covered showers).

The hotel is probably more of a 3, but the location and price give it a bump up. Perhaps it would be a better experience as a Marriott elite (was only silver when I was there), but who knows...

This AC Carlton is exactly what you would expect from a business hotel -- clean, comfortable and very well located. It is right by Atocha train station, Retiro Park and to the main museums in Madrid.

We didn't have breakfast in the hotel as it seemed over priced, but there are plenty of places nearby, where you can get a tostada and a coffee.

We found our room to be clean and the beds very comfortable. The bathroom was also good, with a strong shower -- we particularly enjoyed having music in the shower.

I would recommend bringing earplugs however, as the street-facing rooms are extremely noisy. Although the heating worked well, it was very noisy, which meant it couldn't be kept on at night, and our room was freezing in the morning.

There is no wifi in the rooms (unless you pay for it), but there is good, free wifi in the lobby.

Myself and my partner stayed at this hotel in October. The hotel was kind enough to upgrade us to a junior suite - which was very pleasant. However, there we had two issues with the condition of the hotel which completely marred our stay.

Firstly, the fixed shower is only 6 foot high, making it impossible for anyone taller than 6 foot to use it comfortably without crouching or otherwise contorting. In addition, as I tend to not wear my glasses in the shower, I occasionally couldn't see the shower head and ended up bumping my head against it. In 15 years of travelling and regularly staying in hotels all around the world, I can honestly say I've never encountered this before.

The second issue was a lack of functioning air-conditioning in the room. There were thermostats, but the desk informed us that they didn't work and the air-conditioning was switched off across the whole hotel. On the first night, that meant we slept with the window closed and nearly roasted alive in a 27.5 deg C room. On the second night we opened the window and had a very disrupted nights sleep with noise from the roads and, frankly, freezing cold. This particular issue was brought to the attention of the hotel, but nothing was done about it.

I was very surprised at these two issues. In my opinion, the hotel did not meet the normal standards of a Marriott hotel.

What's more, after complaining to the hotel about these issues I received a very disingenuous reply that did not, in my opinion, address the issues raised.

Beyond that, Madrid is an excellent city and well worth a visit - but pick a different hotel.

Dear guest,

First of all I would like to apologize again for the inconveniences caused during your stay.

As I already told you, I am really sorry for the problem with the shower, it is the first time that we have this problem with one of our guests, if you would have told us this problem during your stay we would have looked for a solution or a room change with a bathtub instead of a shower.

Regarding your comment about the Air Conditioning, October is a cold month in Madrid, our air conditioning system can only have hot air or cold air, not both at a time. I apologize for the confussion of our Front Desk Staff. We are changing all this installation, in a short time we could have both at the same time.

I reiterate my apologies.

Thank you for your opinion, it will help us to improve.

Kind regards

José Alfonso García

Stayed for 4 nights in November with spouse. High Floor room (7th). It looks like these rooms have been remodeled recently and although small for US standards, it accommodated everything, even a working area.
The best: The Shower. A fully enclosed Rain-style shower. Finally, someone in Europe "got it" and understood that those partial doors on the side of a bathtub are only good for getting the bathroom all wet. Those who have traveled around Europe will know what I'm talking about.
The bed was a bit of a disappointment since it was two twins pushed together. We later found out that they had kings also, which we would have preferred.
Room safe was small (won't fit a laptop) and key-based. They should upgrade to the electronic kind.
A drawback is that the walls are thin and we could clearly hear our neighbors' phone conversations, tv, etc.
Staff was very courteous and helpful.
Location is good and we hauled two large suitcases from Atocha (about 400 meters away) without difficulty but it might be a bit far for someone who isn't used to that.
Two different metro stations (Palo de Frontera and Atocha) very close by. Lots of taxi traffic on the road.
Did not have breakfast here. It was 15 Euros/person and as many have stated here there are several cafés and bakeries on the block where you can get a fine breakfast for much, much less.
Wifi is free if you are a Marriott Rewards member (any status). Sign up before you come, its free. The quality/speed of the wifi wasn't fantastic, but it worked for our basic needs.

Overall considered to be a great value for the money (less than 100 euros/night). Hotels in Madrid can be quite dear. Would definitely stay again.

This is four-, not five-star hotel; it's not luxurious or surrounded by scenic beauty, like the Ritz. The neighborhood is decidedly urban and busy, with lots of people, traffic and commotion, but for our needs it was the perfect choice and we would definitely stay here again.

This hotel has a convenient location about two blocks from the Reina Sofia Museum, two blocks from the Atocha Train and Metro Stations, about a 15-minute walk from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and about a 10-minute walk from the Prado Museum and adjacent Botanical Garden (Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid) and Retiro Park (Parque del Buen Retiro).
As we spent most of our four days in Madrid going to the above three museums, or making day trips to Toledo or Valladolid, we couldn't have chosen better.

The were loads of restaurants on the surrounding streets, and there was a Super Cor supermarket just a few doors down for snacks and beverages (they had a good wine selection).

The hotel's buffet breakfast was fantastic, offering not just quantity but quality: torta (Spanish potato frittata), smoked salmon, a wide selection of sliced meats including varieties of dry-cured pork, typical Spanish cheeses, bacon, scrambled eggs, breads, churros, pastries and cookies, cereals, yogurt, fresh fruits such as sliced melons and pineapple, various jams, and more. It was satisfying and filling to say the least, nonetheless, some guests made takeaway sandwiches in addition to their breakfasts!

When I booked our room, I requested an "inside" room as opposed to a street-facing room based on reviews I'd read that were critical of street noise drifting up to rooms. Our inside room was quiet and dark; we slept well in our comfy King size bed (in our "standard" room). As a Marriott member, we should have had free Internet in the room, but I didn't have my number, so we just used the free Internet in the ground floor lounge. It worked fine. The satellite TV gave many choices.

The staff was friendly and helpful, offering directions and tips (such as informing us of the free entry hours at the Prado). The hotel didn't seem to mind if guests bought food and bottles of wine elsewhere and then consumed these in the ground floor lounge while using the free Internet. The bartender gladly uncorked their wine bottles and provided them with wine glasses.

We pre-booked a shuttle through the airlines to get from Madrid Barajas Airport to the hotel but we caught a taxi back to the airport on the day we left. It only took a few minutes to flag a taxi from in front of the hotel. The fare was 30 Euro, just a little more than the shuttle for two.

Room Tip: Inside rooms were as quiet as tombs.

Stayed here in late October, from check-in staff to room maids and barman - the service was superb.

Hotel is well located for Atocha train station and about 15-25 min walk from the area where there are lots of bars and tapas restaurants.

Rooms are large, well equipped and beds comfortable. Windows keep the noise out well.

In line with other reviews I would suggest that the hotel put wifi throughout the hotel for free - its a minimum expectation for most travellers these days and having to be in reception to get the free wifi is a bit limiting.

Other than that I would recommend it and stay again. Excellent value.
