“Never knew until now how bad a smoking room smelled”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2014

Rafaelhoteles Atocha is a favorite hotel for coach tours because it is a bit out of the city center, and there is space enough to park more than one coach. Anyone checking in during tourist season would do well to check-in earlier in the day. By the time we joined the first day of our tour at 4 pm, the only rooms available in the hotel were smoking rooms. So we had to stay in a smoking room, room # 220, for one night. They moved our suitcases up to a non-smoking room, #320, the next day. Breathing free in a non-smoking room was like being in heaven, but but sleeping the previous night in the smoking room was like being in the other place.

Plus
• Both room 220 and 320 face the street, but the glass is very thick, blocking out the street noise, no neighbor noise.
• Amazingly good restaurant. Loved their buffalo mozzarella and peeled tomato salad with basil olive oil. Also veal sirloin and roti potatoes
• Refrigerator, several electrical plugs
• Even on Sundays, groceries, food, and necessities are for sale at the Atocha station
• Clean rooms, helpful staff

Minus
• Wi-fi only in public spaces
• Queen-sized bed is two singles pushed together
• Breakfast was pandemonium the first morning because so many tour groups were staying at the hotel. Nowhere to sit. On the second day, they had it sorted out better.

We would advise planning to get there soon after check-in and taking advantage of the great food at the restaurant/coffee shop. Our stay was average at best, considering the unpleasant surprise of sleeping in a room where towels, bedsheets, pillowcases, and even the linoleum floor smelled of cigarette smoke.

Rafael Atocha - Madrid.
Duration of stay : 2 Nights
Location : near city center. 10 min walking distance from Atocha rail/metro station entrance.
Attraction nearby : Reina Sofia Museo (7/8 min walking distance ). Street side pubs and restaurants are good.
Service : Reception staffs are very cooperative. Hotel chef tried out of their way to prepare vegetarian Indian style breakfast for our group.
Only bad thing is room decor and condition. It needs serious refurbishment. Although bed mattress was in good shape.

I stayed here may1-3 because I was arriving from costal del sol by train on the 1st. Next day took train to Toledo. Day after that train to Barcelona. This hotel worked perfect for the convience of the train. If I was not having early morning train travel I would not stay here. The location was not great for other things. The price was also great 65 Canadian on Hotwire. I found the room clean and spacious. Hotel front desk staff were friendly.

Don t expect the "modern" room mentionned on the website when you book a standard room. The pictures are just wrong! I got a room which was modern...in the 80s but certainly not in 2014. They just lie and make you believe that what you get is what you see. Wrong. Totally wrong. I call this a rip off and for 130 euros it s a nice one.

What else?
- Room service closes at 11pm.
- No individual bottles of shampoo, conditioner,...but just a dispenser in the shower.
- Wifi is as fast as back in the 80s (but free). Sometimes it s better to pay for speed.
- No chance you can watch the TV from the bed: screen is too far and can t be properly oriented.
- Chair almost broken becomes dangerous.

Great for a 4**** hotel which only deserves 3***!!!

Don t go there.

I stayed in this hotel for the weekend.
The rooms are very clean and cosy. Samsung TV.
The breakfast and the coffees/juices are very delicious.
Surprisingly very quiet.
From the station an easy walk of max 15min.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

We stayed 4 nights in the hotel and found the facilities to be lacking. It is not a new hotel and the housekeeping does not keep the place clean. There is a layer of dust on the sidetables. If you are considering taking a triple room, my advise is to use another hotel. The room is merely a standard room with an extra bed. It is absolutely inconvenient for the person sleeping in the middle. The front desk is usually serviced by one staff. Hence, guests checking in and out, queries about what to do around etc just have to wait patiently. The hotel breakfast is nothing to rave about, just basic. On our last day, while we were doing our packing, a lady opened our room with a key and seeing us in the room packing immediately closed it again. Feel that there may be some issue with the electronic key system. I am sure for the same price, there are other newer and better hotels out there somewhere.

We were originally booked at the AC but left after seeing the rooms have see through showers. Room was not as slick at the AC but certainly clean, good size and nice enough as well as the plus of free internet in all the rooms. Best of all their restaurant has AMAZING food! It lacked decor and looks like a cafeteria but dinner was comparable to a top restaurant. The morning buffet was standart but for dinner it was outstanding. The staff was so helpful and everyone was great. So glad we discovered it and will stay there again. Right across from the ATOCHA station.
