“Nice hotel close to the airport”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2014

Stayed at Novotel Madrid Campo de las Naciones 16th April - 18th April 2014. Decided to take a break before heading home to Canada. The hotel is actually about 10 minutes drive from Barajas Airport. The location is in a business area which is fine if you are stopping over in Madrid to catch another flight. There is not much to see and do except Parque Carlos 1 nearby. There are a handful of restaurants in the area if you want to eat out and a Corte Ingles if you need to buy anything. Luckily the Metro Station (Campos de las Naciones) is 4 minutes walk from the hotel. From this Metro station, it takes 20-24 minutes to City Centre SOL Metro station with 2 transfers. It is a pleasant ride and being the 2nd last stop on that line, it is never crowded.

The hotel itself is nice and very convenient as it offers free to and from shuttle service every half hour to any of the 4 airport terminals at Barajas. The rooms in the hotel are quite spacious and clean with a fair sized bathroom. The beds are comfortable and the hotel is clean. There is a nice terrace on the 2nd floor with a swimming pool. There is a restaurant in the hotel where had lunch and the food was good albeit expensive (10 euros for a club sandwich). Went to Pullman Hotel next door to have a drink at thier bar as it was too noisy at ours. Our hotel was full of kids because of the Semana Santa (Holy Week) break. Having seen the Pullman, I think I will stay there next time instead.

The shuttle also pick up passengers from the hotel next door (Pullman Hotel) and one other. Although the airport is only 10 minutes away, it takes about 24 minutes to get there because of the stops the bus makes. You call and then wait for the bus outside the arrival terminal. There is a shuttle bus waiting area where you can pick up the hotels' shuttle bus. Make sure you book your seat for the shuttle the night before you check put of the hotel as it does fill up fast.

This hotel needs an update. Stayed for business. It is clearly worn out. Rooms are really, really basic. The sofa in my room was covered with stains. The bed was very uncomfortable (got up with back ache). Room was also cold. Will not return!

The only reason to use this hotel is the IFEMA conference hall is nearby. It is very convenient.
Staff is courteous and friendly -- no issue with this or the restaurant which is good.

Key issues is sleep quality and this may be a personal one. The bed quality is poor and is like sleeping on rocks. You might think that there is no mattress and you are sleeping on box springs only.

But for a business professional the WiFi is the key downgrade. It is so slow with bandwidth where you cannot do a Skype call or even connect with VPN.

Room Tip: Vie over the pool is best. So is high floor.

The best reason to stay at this hotel is IFEMA, the Madrid Fair Centre which is located almost next door. The next best reason is Madrid International Airport, a short (free) shuttle ride away. The hotel is also located next to a Metro station, but to get to central Madrid you need to change trains at least twice. The service during our stay was indifferent - the staff seem to know that they'll get plenty of conference and business guests anyway, without pampering tourists like us. The hotel has plenty of conference space, teeming with activity during week days.
We came by car, but even though the hotel is right by the freeways it was hard to find. The design of the building is inward looking, and the main entrance is in a small alley. They could have bigger signs facing the main roads.
The swimming pool area looks nice, but the doors to it were locked because of the season - a disappointment since it would have been nice to be able to have a drink by the pool, even if it's too cold to swim.

Room Tip: Odd numbered rooms are facing the pool, even numbered the (quiet) street.

The biggest plus about this hotel is the proximity to the airport. Very timely as this was our last stop on a guided tour. There's a regular shuttle that takes perhaps 10 minutes and if you can't catch a shuttle, the metro is only one stop from the International terminal and it's perhaps a 5 minute walk from the hotel.

This is a nice new hotel, large lobby, but small elevators. The rooms are spacious and the beds are large. The washroom is large and clean and well fitted. There's even extra wardrobe and shelf space. Our room overlooked the pool area which was very nice, almost worthy of a resort even though the hotel is in an industrial/retail area.

Nearby, only a 10 minute walk is the El Corte Ingles, for those last minute shoppers, and the street does have a few restaurants and bars, although it's not what would be considered a pedestrian haven.

The lobby has a lounge and the bartenders speak english fluently. It's comfortable, but most of it faces the lobby, so it's not exactly cozy. The breakfast/buffet room is just behind, and although it would seem cramped, it's actually very spacious. The breakfast is well supplied and perhaps caters more to North American tastes, although bacon and eggs is not available. One minus to the hotel is the entrance. It's a complicated little street that looks like a back alley and there's very little room to manouvre unless you're walking.

While the proximity to the airport and shopping is good, it's many, many stops from downtown on the subway, so it's really not convenient for anything touristy. Still, it's a big, clean, bright hotel and I appreciated the location, given we were leaving the next day.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back overlooking the pool are the best view.
