“The Center of Spain”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

This plaza is supposed to be the center of Spain. There is a marker there that indicates where it is. The plaza is always full of people and there are many stores to see, many of them selling tourist souvenirs, but you can find many quality goods in the stores. The bad thing of this place is that you know that there are many pickpockets working their trade there, so you have to be very careful.

“Watch out for pickpockets!!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2011

This area is a very busy area (similar to Times Square in NYC) and filled with tourists, shops, restaurants. My mother was pickpocketed within a half hour of being there, took her wallet right out of her purse. Be EXTREMELY careful when there with your valuables. Otherwise, good location to start sightseeing the surrounding streets or a central meeting place for groups. Short distance to the Plaza Mayor and lots of little , interesting side streets surround the area.

“There's something magical about Madrid.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2011

The quintessential place to start your trip in Madrid. Tapas bar hopping, cafe's, people watching, and a never ending stream of people.

Promise me you'll go to the Chocolateria San Gines after all night partying. Chocolate con churros never tasted so classic and refreshing.

“What's the attraction ?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2011

If you live in a city I bet there's a central square or plaza where you get street theatre, buskers and surrounding shops. That's what you get here. It's not horrendous, but I have no idea why you'd go out of your way to visit.

“Renovation works in summer 2009”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2009

Make sure you'll go to see this beautiful square when in Madrid. It's the main meeting place in the city, always very busy, full of residents and tourists alike and all sorts of street performers. I would actually recommend the whole area around the square as well - all the little charming streets around it - you'll find many bars, cafes and shops here. On the other hand I can imagine it's very noisy during night and day and so would be all the hotels around it...
When planning a trip to Madrid any soon, bear in mind the square is currently just a big building site (August 2009) and it doesn't look like they'll be finishing the works any soon... You can access all shops and restaurants or the metro station no problem (although not all of the metro lines are fully in service, I believe lines no.1, 6 and 12 were very limited or suspended during our stay in first week of August), but - as in my photos - you may have limited view of the square, the equestrian statue and fountains; you can access the statue of the bear no problem - at least at the moment.... Without all the construction work I can imagine the square is just amazing, way busier and more interesting than Plaza Mayor.
