“Very nice hotel, very good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2010

Very nice hotel-like hostel, modern and nicely decorated rooms, clean, nice views from large windows. Good bathrooms. Very friendly and helpful staff. No charge for wireless. It is on the third floor of an old appartment house right on Plaza Santa Domingo. Perfect starting point for walking tours and tapas.

Amazing how much you can achieve with a little bit of visual magic. Having stayed in a a variety of different hostels in Madrid, I'd say this one uses the standard infrastructure the most optimal way, by combining it with clever decorating.

They take the more or less extra 30 EUR that a room here will cost you over comparable other places and invest it into a bit of nice wallpaper, lighting and some deco objects here and there, It's tastefully done and evoques the illusion of more luxury than there actually is. For some people this makes the difference between a bad and a good stay.

But if you take a way the fluff you end up with the standard hostel with all the usual aspects (noisy neighbors, humming air conditions, slamming doors, tongue-tied front desk personnel etc). It is well run, the location is good, it's clean, but at the end of the day, I'm not sure if nice wallpaper is worth the extra room cost. I ended up staying only two days in the Gala, and then went back to my old pals, the Hostal Cervantes, and the Hostal Pacios (two places with comparably good location, equally clean and well run). They're not fancy and when you stay in them, just judging from the furniture, you wonder if Franco is still in office, but when you turn off the light, all hotel beds are the same, and you are glad that you kept those extra 30 Euros for the great tapas they will buy you the next day.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a bad review of the Gala. They are doing a good job, but to me they are in the undecided middle between offering real value for the extra money, or going down to the honest level where their unstylish competitors are.

What a little gem. This is a well decorated new hostel which is right in the heart of Madrid. The lady who runs the hostel is delightful as well as her staff. The rooms are more hotel like having wireless internet, television, daily sheet change, linen etc. I would highly recommend for the price.

We needed a room for three and this room provided three single beds. The room was fairly spacious and the bathroom was great, but some of the other details were lacking. The beds were very hard, and the air conditioner vent was in the entrance and never seemed to get air to the back of the room. Any noise in the halls was easily heard and there was some street noise as well.

Many faults can be overlooked when you have a helpful staff, and the staff at the Gala was very friendly and helpful. They helped with reservations to the airport and always greeted us with a smile when we came in.

The hostel is just a few blocks from the Gan Via and it is easy to walk to many of the attractions of the center of Madrid. There are a couple of subway stations nearby so travel is easy. The hostel is on the third floor of the building, and can be a bit hard to find initially.

It was fantastic experience at Hostal Gala Madrid. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the rooms were modern and very clean! Love the decor! My friend and I especially love the shower - its soo funky and pressure system is great! The location is very convenient - within walking distance to all major attractions! The closest metro stop Santa Domingo ( take Plaza Santa Domingo exit and its only 1 minute walk! Callao is only 3 mins walk away!
It is impossible to get lost in Madrid - its soo easy to walk around.

The hotel is located on the 2nd floor so there are a few flights of stairs to walk up but its nothing to worry about. easy walk.
You get 3 sets of keys. 1 for the front door, 1 for the door to the hotel and 1 for your room.

We loved this hostal! The location was great - just remember when you are exiting the metro at Santo Domingo to take the Plz. Santo Domingo exit and you are right there and it's an easy walk to Sol, Palacio, Gran Via. The receptionists were all friendly and spoke English - which helped. I think we had the best room in the place - there was a little lounge area with a couch, which was nice having some extra space, and there were balconies overlooking the plaza. The shower was tiny, but manageable. Everything was fresh and new. This place was great.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2010

This brand new hostal (opened mid-March 2010) is in a good location, less than one minute's walk from the S Domingo metro station, and a five minute walk from Sol - it's so new, that it still smells of paint (they really need to open the windows and give the rooms an airing). I stayed for three nights. The rooms are clean, smart and modern - but the one I was allocated was very small, with hardly any space around the comfortable bed, and space for only one suitcase on the floor - it was a "double" room, but it would have been unsuitable for two people. The bathroom was tiny, but made the best use of the tiny amount of space available, and the modern shower was excellent. Staff were friendly, helpful, and spoke good English. Problems...very poor soundproofing (including gaps under the doors) and wooden floors means that you hear everyone who walks down the corridor (and some of the rooms are directly off the reception area), and everything said (and done!) in adjacent rooms and in reception - I was woken on two nights by other guests coming back in the early hours, and by a phone ringing in reception. The Wifi is free, but the signal was very poor and unreliable, which made it difficult to use the internet. The badly located motion sensors in the windowless corridor caused the light to go out before I'd managed to get my key in the door. The entrance of the hostal is shared with other residences, and is not clearly marked - it was difficult to find when I arrived in the dark, and at the time of writing, Google Maps lists the wrong address for this hostal - make sure you use the correct address, that is listed on TripAdvisor (at the time of writing, the hostal's web site is "under construction"). I booked it through Expedia, which provided the wrong phone number! Overall, despite its defects, Hostal Gala offers good value for its central Madrid location.
