Description: La Casa del Abuelo is one of the Tapas Bars that you can't miss if you visit Madrid. This house is more than 100 years old and it's one of the most representative Taverns in Madrid. Specialities are shrimps in all of its varieties: grilled, with coarse salt and looking for the prefect cooking point and garlic shrimps, served in our terracotta casseroles with virgin olive oil, garlic and parsley. The tradition is to eat the shrimps with the red sweet wine "El Abuelo" that made this house famous. Today everything is served the same way than 100 years ago!

“Addictive gambas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

Tried the various branches within a stones throw from each other. The gambas are amazing though incredibly simple but satisfying. The Gazpacho is excellent too.

“Delicious but yes pricey...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013 via mobile

The gambas al ajillo was the best I've ever had and I like their tinto de verano (summer wine) too but it was on the expensive side for tapas. It was about 9 euros for the garlic shrimp and the shrimp were quite small.

“Too expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

It is one of my favourite tapas restaurants in Madrid but the prices have gone up way too much and the portions shrink every time I go.

A real shame because the food it's really good, but those prices are just getting ridiculous.

I went there a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night and it was fairly empty, compare to the longs queues there always used to be. I'm really not surprised.

(The same applies to the other restaurant they have in the area, in C\Nuñez del Arce, 5.)

“Wonderful shrimp and tapas!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

La Casa del Abuelo is a wonderful tapas bar!! We specifically went in search of this place to have some traditional tapas and ended up delighted with the "gambas al ajillo" (small shrimp sautéed in lots of garlic and olive oil). We started our evening at the smaller of the two restaurants near Plaza de Santa Ana (not much seating here) and ultimately moved down the road just a bit to a much larger place (same restaurant with ample seating) where the three of us shared raciones of pimientos de Padron (wonderful small fried peppers from Galicia, sprinkled with salt), Spanish chorizo, patatas bravas two ways (traditional sauce/aioli sauce), ham croquetas, and calamares fritos (fried squid). All of this accompanied by some light white wine. It was more than enough for the three of us; we sadly couldn't finish it all. Highly recommend.

“gambas al ajillo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

Great little space with delicious garlic shrimp and vermouth on tap. The shrimp are cooked perfectly and right in front of you so they are still sizzling when they are brought over. Don't forget to dip the bread. The croquettes were also good, but the reason to stop by is the garlic shrimp. Just those and either a cerveza or vermouth. The place can get a bit crowded as it is small and very popular but worth the stop.
