“Good intentions but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

We recently spent a long weekend at this hotel. When booking I was surprised by the price difference of other nh hotels in Madrid. Now I know why! The hotel definitely needs renovations. Specially the windows, quite a draft in the room!

The staff at the front desk is friendly. At the breakfast room they are overwhelmed and very badly organised. Very little of everything so they're constantly running to get what's missing and end up having to suffer unhappy customers.

Does not deserve 4 stars at all!

We had stayed at this hotel a couple of times prior to 2006. It used to be beautiful, elegant, and cozy, but it has lost its charm. It needs to be renovated. We stayed for three days in early October and will not stay there again. The air conditioner made a loud noise, making it difficult to sleep. We had our briefcase stolen right under our noses in the lobby of the hotel, around 9 a.m.. They used to have someone at the door at all times, which they do not have now. The security guard came afterwards. Clean, great location, good breakfast, but failed to meet expectations, not to mention the security was not the best.

Lovely old section of town, but with modern conveniences. Easy walk to the subway and great connections to all over the Madrid area. Hotel is located on a quiet side street with lots of trees. The room was quiet and comfortable. The AC worked well, and all the amenities were as stated. We enjoyed our stay there. Staff speaks some English, but there can be difficulties, but they were willing to try and accomodate our needs. Walking distance to acceptable restaurants. Hotel restaurant for breakfast was outstanding and a real bargain for an American style breakfast, with a hint of European flair--really worthwhile to try and get the breakfast included.

Hotel is well located, a few yards from Paseo de la Castellana, one the most important thoroughfare of Madrid and one and half block from Calle Serrano, a very fashionable shopping street of the city.
It is a simple unpretentious hotel, clean, quite comfortable with very reasonable prices and less than half of its sister hotel of the same chain a few blocks away.
The receptionists were all effective, in general helpful, especially one of the assistant of the morning shift. He patiently gave us directions to all the places we were looking for and offered a number of good suggestions.
There is a close by parking for hotel guests at a reasonable rate for a city like Madrid.
The breakfast was varied and good, not great, but quite a bargain when it is included in the room rate.
The rooms were simple, of average size, clean with all the basic standard furniture, including a small flat screen TV. The bathroom was clean, well lighted and also of average size. The A/C worked well and was quite silent. The only minor complaint was the size of the soap bar which was tiny and quickly disappeared.
In summary, a good, pleasant, accessible hotel benign on the pocket.

The hotel is located in an ancient building on a quiet area , 200 m away from the underground station, with two lines (5 Ruben Darío and 10 Gregorio Marañón) taking you directly to downtown Madrid. Room is big enough, and bathroom as well, but they are a bit dated, though some rooms have been newly refurbished. Rooms are well appointed, with A/C and TV set and free wi-fi, which is very convenient, up to NH standards. Breakfast was delicious with a great variety of fresh products. The only downside is that lifts are scarce and slow. I was lucky to get a very good deal, under 50€ for one weekend night, including breakfast. Definitely it’s a good hotel and a good choice for an excellent getaway in Madrid.

This hotel has quite a few things going for it. It is located in a posh area, with lots of lovely sidewalk restaurants, but at the same time, it's not noisy. There are always some taxis parked in front of the hotel and the nearest metro is an easy walk. The hotel serves up a high quality buffet breakfast, but ala, it is not accompanied by service-with-a-smile from the staff managing the show, maybe because the place gets quite crowded by 8 am. Room service, on the other hand, is quite good. The fuse blew in my room and they sent someone to fix it in less than a minute. The biggest negative I found was that the standard rooms have poor lighting. The window opens into an inner enclosure, so there's no direct sunlight at all, which is rather gloomy.

I stayed here on business for three nights. The room was adequate, although the air conditioning didn't work on the first night. The lifts were slow. The breakfast was reasonable. The service was very poor at peak times (around 30 people queuing to check out).
