“Poor service, average food, overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

We like paella a lot so we wanted to have a really good one. The restaurant pretends to be elegant but is not at all. The service reminded me of the state-owned socialist restaurants in Cuba - I've never seen so many yawning waiters. Our paella was just average, nothing special, and especially not worth the price which was about twice as high as elsewhere in Madrid.

“Best Paella I've ever eaten”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2011

This was such a fun experience. We walked up to the door and felt like we were being let into a castle through huge wooden doors. This place was recommended by Rick Steves. We specifically booked a room at Hotel Mario so we could be closeby and it did not disappoint! It is in plaza opera (which is clear metro stop so easy to get to) and the paella was worth the wait.

Most places in Spain didn't charge for rolls. The paella took a long time to prepare and since we were expecting large portions we hadn't eaten since earlier in the day and had done a lot of walking. We broke down and ate two of the stale rolls on the table with our cokes (they were little cokes by the way- tiny tiny bottles) and our stomachs were growling. Clearly we should've gotten appetizers as it took a long time for paella to be prepared.

Service was a little snobby so much so that we didn't even ask for a picture to be taken because we didn't want to upset the waiter. It was fairly empty on a weeknight (We were there early to eat at 7:30 pm though) and so it was quiet and romantic in that sense...minus the growling stomachs at our table.

In the end it was worth it. The classic seafood paella was incredible. Huge chunks of seafood (prawns, mussels, and squid) were visible and they were so fresh. I didn't know I liked crawfish until I ate here and had these. The saffron rice was moist and flavorful. IT was totally worth the wait and if we had the opportunity to eat here again we would- but we would order a large bottle of water and an appetizer while we waited 45 minutes for the meal to arrive at the table! The meal cost over $100 for 2 people but it was worth it (except those rolls- dont touch them. They are stale and cost an extra $4 each!).

“We thought we can never leave Madrid after eating there”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2010

We followed some of the guide books and went for some paella in this place. It had a big sign but it took some skill to get into it. The waiter was helpful but the prize was not cheap. He recommend us to have the shell fish paella and with some grill squid as starter. The food came alright but after we went back to the hotel, my wife and I were both feel so sick that we were vomiting and going to bathroom from 5:00PM (we were having some meal at 3:00 PM) until the next morning. We thought we would not make the 8:45AM flight that we were leaving for Barcelona. That was the only thing we had all day long and there were impossible for us being poisoned by other food.
