“Location, location, location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

This apartment house is located literally in the center of Madrid, on a busy pedestrian shopping street steps from the Gran Via and about two blocks from the Puerta del Sol. The building itself is a little spooky with narrow , dimly lit corridors. We had a studio apartment for a week. Unfortunately, it was an interior apartment so that our windows looked out onto a narrow air shaft with absolutely no view. The kitchen and bathroom were modern and functional but the decor of the bedroom/sitting room certainly left something to be desired. The walls were painted a pale yellow with a green accent wall. The torn curtains were magenta, the throw on the futon was orange, the quilts were mismatched. Torn cushions were placed on the hard chairs placed by the small dining table. Despite this decorator's nightmare, we had everything we needed. Wi-fi was not working at first but after three days it was repaired. From this location we were able to walk to all the main tourist attractions including El Prado, the Plaza Mayor and El Palacio Real. Madrid is a beautiful city with its wide avenues and pretty parks but the mark of poverty is on the city. There are three or four beggars to every main street. The "working girls" on Calle de la Montera posed no problem for us. After a few days we exchanged greetings with the regulars . Prostitution is legal in Spain. All in all, I'm not sorry we stayed here. If you are in Madrid, don't forget to stop at El Museo de Jamon, a cafe/bar/restaurant/ bakery/deli. We had drinks and tapas here daily and also had Sunday dinner. The food is delicious and inexpensive but the place is always very crowded. It gives you a chance to rub elbows with the natives.

Room Tip: Ask for an apartment facing the street. Interior apartments are dingy.

We paid quite a lot of money for the location (which was really excellent), free WiFi (which didn't work for 5 out of 6 days of our stay) and cleaning on the fourth day (which never happened). All the management could say was "I'm sorry". Complaining via SMS makes no sense as they hardly respond. Altogether, we would never come back here.

We did start in a bad way. Wrong apartment instead of the one we had ordered. Simply of lower , standard/quality and on the other side of the street.
After a short mail and phone cenversation with the manager we did have the ordered apartment the next day. This apartment was nice, superb standard and what we expected for the price.
Everything did go as planned and we had a nice weekend in Madrid.
The apartment was placed central for everything, and that gives of course natural noice from peoble around on the walking street.
This is how to be in a big city. If you dont like this type of life you should find a country house instead.

Nothing wrong with the location, stone's throw from the macdonald's on gran via / montera.
The problem is the working girls - there are hundreds of them - and they are around 24 hrs a day !!! kinda creepy that they sit on the entrance and sometimes refuse to move! creepy !!
Apartment itself is clean and safe. The manager Gonzolo Gonzales is very helpful.

Spent 4 nights in the Gran Via Sol and were more than pleased with our stay. The apartments are about as central as you get, all we wanted to visit was within a15 mins walk. The apartment was clean ,comfortable and had a good size balcony. Nothing was too much bother for the very friendly manager, who made us feel very welcome. Would stay there again if ever I should return to Madrid.

We found this via Trip and booked via Booking.com and stayed from Friday till Monday in mid Feb. Weather was cool but blue sky and sunshine all weekend. The location on Montera is only 75 mtrs from the Gran Via Metro (Cheap and easy to use if you buy a book of 10 tickets in the stations) Takes about 45 minutes to get to the apartment from the airport by metro. Make sure you get good directions to the apartment as the entrance is behind an anonymous gate next to a sign saying LAS VEGAS (of all places!) The apartment we stayed in was on the 4th floor overlooking the street. The apartment was clean, comfy beds, hardwood floors, funky shower enclosure, good sized kitchen and Gonzalo Gonzales who runs the place was very friendly and helpful.
Some people may be a little disconcerted by the street girls who work in the immediate area, but I stayed here with my wife and 2 grown up children and we found that they even added to the atmosphere and we never felt threatened or unsafe at any part of our weekend in Madrid. It is a great place to stay for the weekend with lots to see and some great architecture along the wide streets and plazas. Check out the Cerveceria (100 Montaditos) opposite the apartment which sells beer at 2 Euro per half litre, there are some good tapas bars locally too. (Labras Restaurant at the bottom of CalleTetuan is very traditional and does great battered fish amongst other good stuff) Another bargain food and drink venue are the 'Museo Jamon' shops which sell beer, wine, coffee and great ham bocadillos all for 1 euro each...a dream come true for all Yorkshiremen.
All in all Madrid is well worth a visit, maybe it was the pefect blue sky and sunshine, but it was a helluva change from wet and windy Blighty. Salut!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony overlooking the street. Sun streams into the room in the morning. Late a...
