I have mixed views about this Hotel, which I stayed in this September.
However in actual fact, if you look up their web site, the Bristol pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin, especially it's brilliant location in the centre of town (still only 10 mins walk from the airport). The bar (no draft beers, but bottles reasonably priced), pool/garden, rooms etc. are as described on the web site and as shown in the photos, and as I booked a single room B&B at budget internet price I shouldn't really have had much to moan about.
However.......yes, the decor is a bit dingy (the wood panelling in the corridors is just one step up from flock wallpaper!), yes, the continental breakfast leaves you wanting to rush round into the nearest greasy spoon for the full English, and yes the view outside the inward facing windows is dire (waste pipes etc.), but really this didn't bother me. What did was the size of my room (very small), the pillow with very little filling, and the air con unit with controls which were out of reach unless you tilted the unit precariously forward. Also unless you fully closed the louvre windows the recirculating effect of running the air con was to draw in any cigarette smoke, or other fumes from outside. My particular problem, until I fully shut the windows, was cigarette smoke - probably need to mention here that Gibraltar is smokers heaven, hardly any restrictions on where you can smoke and all tobacco products are extremely cheap!
Anything good to say? Yes, the TV in my room had free access to all UK Sky Sports channels, so I was able to catch up on some live cricket and football, the fridge was big enough to stash some water bottles in, the small en suite was OK, with a reasonable supply of toiletries and towel changes, and the room was fairly quiet (other than the soporific drone of the air con unit - at last adjusted to 18C). The hotel staff were friendly enough and the place seemed relatively clean and tidy, The reception is well positioned, fully air conditioned (it hits you as you enter) and the entrance doors are automatic so easy to get cases in and out (a simple but nice touch). Also I particularly liked the vending machine in the lobby which dispensed cheap cans of San Miguel.
Would I use the Bristol again? Yes, of course it's cheap, but I would probably pay the little extra for a double room with an exterior window. Above all though I came to see and experience Gibraltar (which didn't dissappoint me at all - great place) not the inside of a hotel room.
