“Old (clean though) and no breakfast buffet”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

Stayed here for one night and i was dissapointed by the breakfast. Not possible to order anything but english breakfast (bacon, eggs, grilled tomato, beans and toast with butter and marmelade). Enough but i like cereals of some kind an fruit. None of it was available. I skipped the bacon and had some extra toast an boiles eggs. But that was how far it goes. Everythingin the hotel is very old but clean. So good place to stay but skip the breakfast!

The location of this hotel is really its only good point. It is convenient for the Rock Tours, cable car and is a short (but very busy walk with only one safe crossing point) from Main St. However, it is on a very busy roundabout with non-stop traffic from quite early in the morning until well after 7pm.
On approaching the hotel one is greeted by a line of very faded, tattered international flags and numerous windows with cream curtains in various postions of open/closed.
We arrived to a rather cool reception to be immediatley presented with our bill - with payment having been taken 4 DAYS PREVIOUSLY! At all the other 6 hotels we used on this holiday, we were told payment on departure was fine.
The 1st room we were offered was not acceptable as the curtain rail was hanging off the wall. The ceiling was peeling where a water leak had affected the plaster, the windows were 1950s style metal with badly peeling paint and there was a sort of wardrobe fitted in such a way that it partly divided and darkened the room. There were 2 unmatched upright chairs and quite the most moth-eaten sofa we have encountered outside a jumble sale. It really was in a very scruffy state. The bath plug was off its chain and broken such that the chain could not be re-attached.
We reported to the (now different) receptionist and she arranged for us to change rooms. The 2nd room was in better condition but the plastic clothes hook unit on the back of the bathroom door was broken. The sofa was slightly less scruffy but the paintwork on the windows was peeling.
When we looked around, we could find no fire escape in this hotel except for a spiral one from the top floor only. There was no access on to it for the other 2 floors.
Breakfast was the full English variety or any permutation of it's constituents and the breakfast staff were pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: It appears an inside room might be best.

I've seen negative reviews, and our cab driver even criticized our choice of hotel on the way. The fact is, the Queen's hotel is a comfortable, clean and friendly place to stay. It's located right by the cable car terminal, which is also where the rock tours start. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, breakfast was good and the staff directed us to everything we needed.

If you're planning on spending a lot of time in your hotel room while you're in Gibraltar, you can spend 2-3 times as much to get a luxury room. If you're going to be enjoying the city and the rock, the Queen's hotel is a great place to stay.

Position ok, but stuck in time. Water leaks to start with, so had to change room. Sheets and blankets for the bed! Shower head no pressure, breakfast basic glad only there for few nights.
Would not recommend for more than that.

This hotel might be called quaint or even retro, but really, it is a 1954 hotel stuck in time. The "lift" is large enough for three slim people or maybe two adults and two children. Our room had a nice, noisy view of a roundabout, a pub, and the bay in the distance. The toilet is situated such that one's knees are under the bathroom lavatory. The staff were quite pleasant. The location is excellent, and the free parking is on the street, but very convenient. We would look for another hotel should we return to Gibraltar.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor.

Reviews that refer to 'old charm' clearly loved Fawlty Towers. This is an over-priced, dingy hotel on a roundabout, everything about it reminiscent of British catering standards from the late 1950s. The rooms are passable at best, but the public spaces are dirty and decrepit. Breakfast is a joke: stale coffee, packet orange juice. Would you like the cooked breakfast, sir? Is there an alternative? No. Roll on two slices of soggy bacon, a cooked tomato, fried egg and a dollop of that gourmet delight, baked beans, alongside two slices of overdone toast, served by waiters who couldn't care less. Gibraltar in general is overpriced and antiquated, and standards of food, drink and service light years behind those just across the frontier. Next time I need to use the (very good) airport, I shall be staying in La Linea.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else, or if you have to be here ask for a room with balcony.

By these standards the Gibraltar hotel market is in dire need of an injection of competition. As other reviewers have noted, the hotel is basic and dated. That is fine if the prices reflect that fact, but they do not. On the plus side, it has a good location in the heart of the town, close to Main Street and with a view of the Rock and the cable car. It was also spotlessly clean, and I found the shower worked well. Breakfast was inflexible. Service did not start until eight and you got a full English whether you like it or not. On the first day, I asked for mine without beans, but it came with beans. On the second day, about twenty of us were waiting outside the dining for about twenty minutes for service to start, and then they seemed surprised to see us, but at least no beans. One other concern was that the rooms were secured only with Yale locks, although Gibraltar has a relatively low crime rate and I never felt unsafe in the slightest. All in all I was not impressed, but given the lack of reasonably priced alternatives, I have to conclude that I would stay here again.
