“OK standard”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

You get a clean room when you book at Queen's Hotel, no more, no less. For a couple of nights it's allright but not if you're going for a weeks holiday and want a nice hotel to stay at. However the rooms are clean and tidy. The breakfast is OK. The location is very good.

This is a very basic hotel as far as normal standards are concerned in Gibraltar. It is fairly dark and gloomy throughout with a very dated decor and rooms finished to a poor standard. Our room overlooked a busy intersection and the dockyard. The mattress on the bed had collapsed , some of the handles to the bedside cabinet had come off and the little old 14" analogue TV gave variable quality reception. The chipped tiles, rusty metal widows and stained paintwork in the bathroom as well as an unstable WC did little to improve the experience. What was good about the hotel were the staff who were pleasant and helpful at all times. The breakfast was good value too. But, overall, this is a tired old hotel that is in dire need of a total refurbishment throughout and until that happens is unlikely to better a 2 Star recommendation.

The hotel is in a fab location , we did pay extra for a suite as we were getting married although the hotel is old the staff are very welcoming, and the bar staff we had a lady natalie look after us when we had a night cap , she was helpful in recommending the italian nearby and other restaurants especially the Jumpers traditional fish restaurant a short walk , the position is over looking the cable car and we had two balconies one overlooking the new wharf beautiful new marina and upmarket restaurants the waterside especially and ocean worth the extra money ,across the road superb italian and little supermarket , I did go to morrisons but this unusually was just as cheap , recommend a couple of day stay also its near the bus stop and in walking distance to the registar office if you are getting married

Room Tip: upper floor pay extra for a suite with beautiful views and balconies

Good location near both tourist attractions and the center of city. The room standard was good in realation to price. Breakfast was good and the staff was nice. If you dont plan to stay more in the hotel except for sleep and breakfast you get a good value for money spent here.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2012

We booked two nights at the Queen's Hotel in the middle of April as we had it recommended to us.

The hotel itself is a little tatty, needing a refurb. but is clean and tidy. We booked a superior double room which overlooked the harbour and, with a bit of neck-craning, the bottom part of the Rock. It comprised a double bed, settee, table and chair, some satellite TV channels and a bathroom/toilet. There was a small balcony which my wife used (I don't do heights!)...

The room was adequate, the bed reasonably comfortable. The bathroom was clean, though for some reason the toilet was set in a small niche which meant, not to put too fine a point of it, I had to sit on sideways if I didn't want my knees pressed against the wall!!

Breakfast was thrown in with the price comprising Orange Juice, Tea/Coffee, Egg, Bacon and tomato, and a couple of slices of toast. It was OK.

The communal lounge/bar was quaint if a little outdated, accommodating smokers. Again it was perfectly adequate.

We had one evening meal at the hotel. I ordered a pork steak (which they didn't have) so opted for a Lamb Shank, new potatoes and mixed vegetable. The new potatoes were canned, the veg. was frozen, the meat was tasty... Not really very impressive. I wouldn't recommend eating in, especially as there were only the two of us in the Restaurant. Could do better.

The service was friendly and reasonably discrete.

The centre of Gibraltar is a very noisy place to be, cars and bikes swirling round the hotel from early in the morning.

The Queen's is well-situated for the Rock and shops, and the beautiful Botanic Gardens (a real oasis in the heart of the town).

Personally I don't see the need to spend more than a couple of days in Gibraltar as you can pretty much do everything you want to in 48 hours.

Price-wise it's comparatively OK compared with the other hotels, but it's basic.

If I returned to Gibraltar I'd probably stay again, bearing in mind the above issues regarding food etc... But I'm not sure I'd rush back to Gib. anyway.

Room Tip: Only saw the Corner Suite which is reasonably large, nice views, noisy.

There didn't seem to be a lot of options for lodging in Gibraltar. We stayed at Queen's because of the price. They have free parking right in front of the hotel, and it's super close (less than a 5 minute walk) to the cable car. The rooms are pretty bad, but the breakfast was nice. We stayed here one night.

Stayed one night in Gibraltar on the way from holidaying in Spain to catch a ferry from Tarifa to Tanger. Had a hire car but unable to take over the border without incurring extra car hire insurance (60 euros). Recommended that I leave the car on the Spanish border at LaLinea. Got scammed there by man approaching traffic queue saying overnight parking available for 10 euros!!! Caught ex London bus to the hotel which was a hundred yards from the cable car and a good Italian restaurant/cafe. Hotel definitely in need of refurbishment but as most of the other guuests seemed to be working people, maybe it doesn't cater for many tourists. To be honest, could have done Gibraltar in a day as there's not a lot to see other than the Rock andd the Barbary Apes. Am told a lot of ex-pats from Spain come to Gibraltar to do their shopping at Morrisons! I did enjoy the cooked British breakfast though and seeing the waiter in smart dated uniform. No tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Not good value for £70 a double room b & b. but there again very few hotels to pick from in this Garrison town.

Room Tip: Free and ample parking opposite the hotel but if you leave the hire car in La Linear, make sure you...
