“shadow of former glory”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

The Rock Hotel is in a commanding position giving stunning views from public rooms and bedrooms. Designed to maximise cool breezes, the entrance and reception has marble flooring and loads of plants although it would have been nice if these were in ceramic containers rather than plastic tubs.
Our room with a balcony had magnificent views. Bed very comfy and large. bathroom spotless and looks as if it had been refurbished.
Nice fluffy towels and bathrobes.
Food rated as only ok. Breakfast was disappointing with diluted orange juice and cheap sausages and bacon. Good range of bakery and cereals however.
Reception staff at check in and out very helpful - nice touch being offered a glass of sherry on arrival, but declined. restaurant service just acceptable and waiters not that cheerful hence average rating for service.

Parts of the hotel need freshening up and at £115 for B&B felt it was relying on its former glory Lots of celebs have stayed there.
Overall rating deserves better than average but can't really say it was "very good" but would give it "good"

Dear Chris B,
Many thanks for writing this review. I am glad you enjoyed the touches and your accommodation. We have taken your comments about the breakfast on board and are reviewing the items mentioned as we value highly the quality of the product we serve. We believe that your experience with the cooked items and the orange juice is a momentary lapse more to do with preparation on the day than quality.
Best regards,
Charles

Dear Emma4848,
Thank you for your review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Our weekend lunchtime BBQs were introduced in August in our effort to enhance the choice and experience and we are getting great feedback so we will most probably continue with them next year.
Best regards,
Charles

It is three years since we visited the Rock hotel, we did so for our sons wedding. The wedding was planned for the office in the town, but on the suggestion of the hotel staff my son combined with another couple, and they jointly moved the weddings to the hotel, much nicer, and as an old wrinkly I did not have to walk up that very steep slope. The hotel could not do enough for our party, and whilst my views of weddings are that they should be amongst friends, the Rock did prove to be an establishhment full of new and unknown friends. Good views as well, and good gardens.

Our 3rd stay at the Rock, (having also stayed at the Elliott and the Caleta) for 4 nights. We were delighted to have a monkey welcome party; our check in was quick and pleasant and we were given a large glass of sherry while our bags were discreetly taken up to our room.

We had a 2nd floor room (just under the "L"). It was a bit frayed around the edges but comfortable and with a small balcony with a fantastic view over the bay. Unfortunately the balcony front was solid and if you sat down, you couldn't see anything at all. For this reason it wasn't as good as the rooms we've had before where you can sit on the balcony looking out onto the bay. Great to have air con and a fridge as it was so hot until late in the evening.

I commented that a lick of emulsion would make a huge difference to the inside and outside of the room although later realised that the marks on the outside are mainly caused by grubby monkey paws so the cleanliness would most likely be short lived. We loved watching their antics but weren't convinced that the ill fitting screw used as a catch for the balcony door would have been enough to withstand a determined monkey.

The English Breakfast was fairly typical holiday standard with the bacon, sausage, beans etc not great, but lovely fresh fruit salad, pastries etc.

The Wisteria Terrace was very civilised and relaxing apart from the evening where 2 guests rather selfishly brought their ipod with speakers to the bar, which I really think the bar staff should have had stopped. We had considered eating at the bar but this changed our minds.

The sun trap pool area is wonderful and the salt water pool is big enough for a decent swim. We loved it here and had lunch twice, once from the BBQ. There is a limited lunch menu but it is reasonably priced and freshly cooked so well worth it. Friendly and efficient service at the pool bar from Aneta too, I particularly loved the big goblets of chilled white wine.

Yes, the hotel needs smartening up and the Elliott is the better hotel in that respect, but I think the Rock has the edge in terms of the views, pool area, service and overall ambience and character. We are already pining to come back.

My husband and I have just got back from our forth visit to this hotel over a period of ten years. It is lovely to see that a lot of the staff are the same, really friendly and will go out of their way to help. I appreciate previous comments and I agree that the hotel is looking tired and needs renovation . I was shown one of the refurbished rooms which looked great, I especially liked the 'ape proof' screens. I do hope though that the improvements (which I was assured would start in October) will not spoil the current charm. I am already looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: The views from all rooms are wonderful....just make sure you lock your window/door..as apes are real...

Everything has been said about this Hotel. Tired in need of some TLC etc etc the steep hill the rooms. Let me be also honest my wife and I just spent 3 nights there. It is what it is. We had an enjoyable stay. The sea views are amazing and every morning and evening watching the apes playing either above or on or even below our balcony. We had drinks every evening at the Barbary Bar on the patio looking out and watching the activity in the bay. Drink prices are very reasonable and service was good. Breakfast was adequate every morning. Our room was nice and cold and the balcony door had two locks! Make sure you close them otherwise the apes will pay you a visit. The hotel has charm and so much character which is priceless. We have stayed in many hotels around the world and the Rock is defintely unique!! We love walking so be prepared. There is a bus which runs outside the hotel up the hill to the left or down the hill on the right as they drive on the right here of course. Wi-Fi works in the lobby but fades out on higher floors.

We are looking to go back again maybe soon and will be booking the Rock.

Room Tip: Higher floors and have the best sea views!

My wife and I have just spent 10 nights at The Rock Hotel. As many previous commentators have said, the place needs the long-promised refurbishment. However, it exudes charm, has a lovely informal ambiance, and the staff are friendly. All in all one of the best holiday hotels I have stayed in. The rooms offer wonderful views over the Port of Gibraltar, with Spain and Morocco beyond. I found it fascinating, first thing in the morning, and then in the evening, watching the movement of ships in and out, including some the world's best known cruise liners.

Our room was comfortable, and the daily 'service' by the house-keepers excellent. Everything very clean. Breakfasts marvellous, and the 'bar meals' at lunch and during the evening also very good - at reasonable prices.

Just across the road (be careful when crossing) is a great pool area, complete with a cafe serving drinks and light meals. A sun trap on sunny days for those who want a tan.

Okay, The Rock is a bit rough around the edges, but my wife and I felt totally relaxed, and would certainly go again. I definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a balcony. I think a few rooms lack them. Also, if Wi-Fi access is important, do c...
