“An Iconic hotel with a special view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

Art deco style hotel perched on the rock of gibralter, nice hotel, tranquil pool area, superb staff, great view, decor a bit tired but that sensational view made up for it, we love the Rock hotel and gibralter and would like to carry on returning forever!

My husband is Gibraltarian and had always wanted to stay in the Rock Hotel so we finally went a week ago. The views are 5-star, the location 4-star but the hotel is only 3-star. Our room was very tired looking, the bathroom was quite dingy. The water was barely tepid for the first two days and the shower had no pressure at all. We informed Reception each morning but nothing was done. We found used tea-bags in the teapot on the tray in our room so this obviously hadn't been inspected properly. There were dead flies in the public lounge areas which were there all of our stay. On the plus side: the hotel pool, which is across a busy road from the hotel, is lovely and well-appointed. The breakfast choices were excellent and extensive. Tea on the Wisteria Terrace was delicious. There was free internet access (not in our room). Would we stay there again? Probably not, which seems such a shame.

Room Tip: Don't pick room 430!

Dear Sally-Ann S, I was genuinely sorry to read your comments and in particular that your husband, as a Gibraltarian, felt let down having waited so long to stay with us. As you know the Rock is some 80 years old this year and although there was a considerable investment in bedrooms some 14 years ago I think it fair to say the impending refurbishment is at a level hitherto considered and that this will once more render the Rock as a jewel in Gibraltar's crown. I do hope that I will have the opportunity at some point to welcome you and your husband to the 'new ' hotel. Thank you for taking the time post your review.

This clearly has been a fine hotel, but it is now in desperate need of refurbishment, inside and out.
The positive things are a wonderful location and views.
The staff were generally helpful and friendly, but at times there were simply not enough of them. We decided to eat in the bar on our second evening, after 25 minutes we had not even been able to order drinks let alone food, we left and went in to town to eat. When we complained at reception on the way out we were told that management had cut back on staff.
Breakfast was adequate but not inspiring with no variation in the buffet. It was possible to order additional items, but when we tried that 2 fried eggs took 30 minutes to arrive and one of them had a broken yoke.
The room was comfortable, but small and faded with peeling paint on doors, stains etc and the bowl of plastic flowers should have been binned years ago. The metal french doors did not open properly and needed to be double glazed to cut the noise from the road and the dock area but the view was excellent. On our last 2 nights the supply of hot water was limited. This may have been associated with the plumbing problems which put the computer room out of action for most of our stay.
This was not what we expect from a 4 star hotel. However, with some investment it could be the best hotel in Gibraltar given its fantastic location.
Interestingly, we were not given a guest questionnaire to fill in and when we asked for one at reception as we checked out they could not find one. I wonder if that had anything to do with the fact that we had already complained about something?

Dear Monty420, Thank you for your comments. News of our impending refurbishment is very much covered within this site and sufficed to say we too are convinced that this investment will once more lift the hotel to its former status. We have not cut back on staff as you were erroniously informed but a new roster system has been implemented that had created a teething problem which should by now have been ironed out. Naturally I was sorry to read of your experience in the bar - an area that is generally subject to a great deal of praise. Regarding guest questionnaires, these are located in each room with other items of stationery and are also to be found in a dispenser on reception as you check out. Thank you once more for taking the time to post a review.

We stayed here for a short break on our honeymoon. Undoubtedly the hotel is a little tired and in need of the promised refurbishment, however, this did not detract from our stay.

Our room was reasonably spacious, with an excellent view over the Bay of Gibraltar to Spain and North Africa. We were fortunate to have some lovely sunny weather for April and sitting on the balcony watching the sunset was a fantastic experience. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom spotlessly clean.

The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and the bar staff attentive.

We spent several afternoons on the Wisteria Terrace, enjoying our books, a glass or two of wine and the sunshine - very relaxing! We did not have an opportunity to use the pool, but it looked lovely.

We did not eat an evening meal in the hotel restaurant, however the breakfasts were a highlight. If you could think of it, it was available.

Certainly quite pricey, but for a genteel relaxing atmosphere it is recommended. If we return to Gibraltar we would happily stay here again and look forward to seeing the post-refurbishment Rock!

Dear James S, Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. Your comments regarding the comfortable bed and cleanliness as well as positive comments about our staff are welcome as was your comment about breakfast. The Wisteria Terrace is indeed a most relaxing place to be on a sunny afternoon or evening. I was sorry that you did not get a chance to use the pool - this area has been the subject of considerable investment and we are proud of what it has become. I do hope that we can welcome you back either before or after our invesrtment programme. Thank you once more.

we love this hotel....so much so we have chosen Gibraltar, and more importantly, this hotel for our wedding drinks with 30 friends following our ceremony in the Dell in July. This was our second visit, and we echo all other reviews in that the hotel is clean, has oldy-worldy charm by the bucketload (no, we are not an old couple, actually in our 40's), and is in a wonderful location. we have travelled extensively, and the staff are the most pleasant, friendly and welcoming bunch we have come across. We did have a blip when we arrived. we were booked into room 232 (which i see has been mentioned before). It is right by a damp fire exit, paint peeling off walls which didnt bode well! once we got inside, the room was pleasant but there was plaser on the floor in the bathroom! We went down to reception and spoke to George, a lovely man who immediately apologised and upgraded us to a suite, whcih was wonderful....he even arranged for the bed to be changed from a twin to a double and couldn't have been more helpful! I do think that room 232 should be taken out of action until the much needed refurbishment......as we said to George we dont mind that it is dated, it is part of its charm, but falling down is pushing it! Thankfully, we have booked into the Penthouse for our wedding in July, and George let us have a sneaky peek at it to make sure we were happy and we are! All i hope is that our guests, who have all arranged to stay at the Rock for the week of our wedding have decent rooms and not room 232! all in all a wonderful short stay yet again!x

Dear sarah J, Thank you for your review. Your comments regarding room 232 are noted. We are too close to a major refurbishment to revive this room in any major way but naturally if there are any maintenance defects they will be addressed forthwith. The room is often occupied and not subject to major comment. I was glad to read that in the main you felt the room was 'pleasant'. Your comments about George will be appreciated by him I am sure. We look forward to welcoming you for your wedding and of course none of your guests will be allocated room 232 in July as per your request. Thank you.

We stayed at the Rock Hotel under advisement of our friends that were getting married in the Botanical Gardens across the street. First, there are no signs directing you to the hotel. I found that weird. The large sign displayed on the hotel is blocked from view as you drive up the street because of large trees. We actually passed the hotel and had to find a place to turn around to get to the hotel. Not an easy feat to turn around on the roads. Check in was perfectly pleasant, we were greeted nicely and assisted to our room with our bags. The hotel is listed as a 4 star, but that rating must of been given 30 years ago. That looks like the last time this hotel was updated. The furniture and everything is extremely old. Stains, missing paint is just par for the course. In the bathroom, the tub is lifted about 6 inches higher than the floor. So, you have to step up or down to get in or out of the tub. This can be dangerous, I almost busted my butt getting out the shower. The room is comfortable and has a nice view of the straight of gibraltar. We also went to the restaurant in the hotel. A french menu. It was very nice and the service was nice. We went out on a Wednesday night, to see what the nightlife had to offer. Upon our return to the hotel, as we entered we were not so nicely greeted by the night front desk man. He spoke rudely to us and we had to play 20 questions to get past him to head to our room. He was VERY rude and grumpy! I have never been treated in this type of manner when coming into a hotel. The next morning, as my hubby and I prepared to get ready to check out, the maid opened the door and stuck her head in without knocking. Luckily, I was already fully dressed, but my husband had just finished showering. He was standing just out of sight. I will never stay at this hotel again. I am used to a certain level of service from a so-called 4 star hotel and this was not it. It is conviently located across from the Botanical Gardens and near the lift up the rock. But, we will find another place to spend our money.

Dear I0vely4u, Thank you for taking the time to post this review. I was naturally disappointed to read that we did not quite hit the mark in certain areas. I must admit that this is the first time that we have knowingly been 'missed' as we are a large iconic building on Europa Road with quite clear signage adjacent to our car park on the correct side of the road. I was pleased that check-in was pleasant and apologise that your return to the hotel one evening was not such a good experience. I am confused about your restaurant experience, although you seem to have enjoyed it, as our menu is not French but what would now be called 'modern British' with some Moorish and Iberian influences but of course, written in English. The hotel will soon receive the investment that will address issues such as decor and I hope that this fact may get you to reconsider as to whether you might stay with us again at some point. Thank you once more.

We stayed one night at The Rock in the spring of 2011 whilst touring Andalucia. Stepping in to The Rock is like stepping back in time. Yes it is a bit tired, but the facilities were first class, the room was comfortable with a superb view over the Straits of Gibraltar. The small carafe of sherry in the room was a very nice touch. We had a lovely evening meal in the restaurant, having not seen anything to entice us in the town.
One piece of advice that we should have taken more heed of was 'don,t leave the window open and the room unattended', my wife came in to the room from the bathroom to find one of the famous apes sorting through the tea and coffee to find the sugar, my wife's scream moved him as far as the balcony where he sat and opened all the packs of sugar that he'd pinched. We had been warned. Would definitely recommend this hotel if you are staying in Gib.

Dear alunwyn, Thank you for your review and your kind words. For the purposes of current travellers I am afraid that we no longer feature the small decanter of sherry in the room, however we still continue the policy of offering all our guests a glass of sherry on arrival! Thank you for your comments about the restaurant they too are much appreciated. I hope that we can welcome you back to our refurbished hotel in the not too distant future.
