“Nice Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

I went to Gibraltar and stayed at the Rock Hotel at the beginning of February and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I was there with a few close friends and found that the Rock Hotel was in a great location, and the Staff especially the reception staff were very helpful and made that aspect our stay very enjoyable. The Hotel may be a little dated but I cannot grumble at all about the accommodation. People who complain about that is a little short sighted I think, yes it may be an old place and yes it may need refurbishing I believe that that is taking place this year.. When you are on your holidays you should just relax rather than knit pick on every single little thing..Enjoy the location and the enjoy the people.. All I can say is that the Staff were great and I look forward to going back...

Thank you to the Staff for letting us watch the Newcastle Game too... Keep up the good work

Room Tip: All Rooms Have a balcony.. Keep your patio doors closed if you go out.. The upper rooms are great fo...

Dear Skiddy1, Thank you for your review. I was so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and I was particularly comforted to read that you found our front desk staff helpful. Your final comment about our staff in general being "great" also made great reading and your sentiments will be passed on accordingly. We are, as you say, refurbishing this year and plans are well underway - we hope that you can experience the fruits of our endeavours in due course. Thank you.

I stayed four nights at The Rock on business and found that the hotel was over priced, food was average and staff not particulary helpful. Hotel refused to put meals on company account so I had to pay out of my own pocket and was double charged for this. Rooms feel dated, bathrooms have black mould, hot water wasn't working, air conditioning wasn't working and only gave a weak damp mildewy fart of a breeze.

Next time I plan to stay in La Ligne, where hotels are cheaper and food is better.

Dear Martin W, Thank you for your critique. Whilst I can concede that the Rock is an older style of hotel and that our rooms and their facilties need to be contemperised, I find it difficult to perceive that we have nothing positive to offer over and above our neighbours in nearby Spain. That said, as a corporate visitor I would love to have the opportunity for you to experience our product on the completion of our investment in the hope that we may become your first choice hotel when you are here on business. If you would furnish me with your e-mail address I would be delighted to offer a good, introductory rate for any initial stay. Thank you.

The hotel is in a very bad state, the front of the building is awful, the room was dirty with thick dust on fan to the ceiling, holes in the bedding, paint peeling, and very ,very tired furniture. The patio had moss growing over it,paint peeling and one sunbed.I am lost as to how this has a 4 star ratting. But on a positve the staff were very good.

Dear 344mark, Thank you for your review. We are graded on an annual basis by the AA via an unannounced overnight inspection and subsequent to the room stayed in by the inpector he/she will then require to see a further number of bedrooms on a random basis across the hotel. Quite evidently the cleanliness levels you experienced during your stay were below par and certainly do not reconcile with some of the very positive comments regarding cleanliness elsewhere on our Trip Advisor pages. Please accept my apologies for this being the case. Regarding the infrastructure of the hotel I can reiterate that a large scale investment will be shortly underway. Thank you.

What a disappointment - The Rock is in a great position but must be at least 25 years overdue for a refurb! The reception and bar staff were extremely professional and friendly and the reception area was not bad but our room was very disappointing. Everything is well past its sell by date - holes in the sheets, the fan was covered in dust, the outside terrace had a fantastic view over the bay but needed a good jet wash and why only one sunbed when it's a double room? The facade of the building is absolutely awful - paint cracked and peeling, moss and weeds growing. We paid just over 100 pounds for the night and have stayed in hotels in Central London which were better for less money. Whoever owns this hotel seriously has to pull their finger out and spend some money on it - not fair on your guests (basking in faded glory) and definitely not fair on the staff who have to work in such an environment. Shame on you owners! Joy B.

My wife and I spent 5 nights at the hotel recently and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves right from the start when we were greeted by George at reception with a glass of refreshing sherry which was a very pleasant after our flight from Gatwick. Yes, the hotel needs refurbishment, but it was comfortable and warm and the staff friendly, except at breakfast where one had to occasionally remind staff that you were waiting to be seated. We saw some guests ignore the notice to wait to be seated, probably because of the lack of attention from the staff on previous mornings. The hotel is convenient for the town as well as the cable car to the top of the rock. The view from our balcony was impressive and was a fine place to rest at the end of the day and watch the sun go down. If we return to Gibraltar, I see absolutely no reason not to stay at the Rock Hotel again, refurbished or not!

Room Tip: Room 324 was a little noisy in the mornings as one of the hotel's offices is situated across the...

Dear Paul S, Thank you for your comments - the sherry on arrival is somewhat a tradition at the Rock and I am glad that the concept appealed to you. The refurbisment, as is well documented in these pages will be starting soon. I apologise that breakfast serviced was less than 100% on occasions, this has been brought to the attention of the appropriate department head. I was obviously delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay to the point where you would consider a return visit. Thanks once more.

My wife & I stayed here for a wedding in Gibraltar. The hotel is very well situated in the heart of Gibraltar high on the hillside. Our room was spacious & well appointed with a lovely balcony. We had beautiful views over the bay which unfortunately is a little industrial but still looks great in the morning sun. We also directly overlooked the Botanical gardens which are beautiful & a great place to spend a lazy afternoon. The Hotel itself was clearly built in a golden bygone era (1932 apparently) & carries an old world charmed steeped in history. The bar has a great collection of old photographs of famous guests. Time has faded her grandeur however & this is reflected in the decoration of the rooms which are comfortable & well appointed but perhaps in need of an update. The breakfast was perfectly satisfactory & the waiting staff did a good job here. In conclusion we would not consider any other accommodation in Gibraltar & will certainly be returning to the Rock hotel in the future.

Dear Technog0at, Thank you for your review and the fact that you would choose to stay with us again is praise in itself. Our refurbishment will be starting quite soon now and on your return you will see that the 'update' to our rooms that you mention will be very much in evidence! Thank you once more for your kind words.

I have stayed here four times now, and each time I arrive I am greeted by name and with a smile. The place is suffering a little from age, but is due a massive refurbishment this year. The deals possible make it an affordable place to stay, and the breakfast buffet is so huge that you can effectively skip lunch. The bar menu is not amazing, however; it is pleasant, but limited. There again, the Rock isn't about its bar menu but about the views from the terrace, the sunsets in glorious colours over Spain, the gardens across the road and the swimming pool in Summer. Lying in the water in Autumn watching migrating biords soaring overhead is a true delight.
One problem on my last visit was the removal of the bus stop going downhill outside the hotel. On the oter hand, the buses are now free...

Dear Tony C, It's always good to see a review writen by a regular, thank you for taking the time to do so. You may be interested to know that a new bar menu is being implemented shortly and that also, as part of our long-term future plans new food and beverage concepts are being discussed. The removal of the bus stop has naturally been a source of comment and our views have been expressed to the authorities in question. Thank you once more.
