“Great Time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

My husband and I have visited Gibraltar before and decided this time to stay at The Rock Hotel. The recent reviews were very mixed but we decided to go ahead with our original booking. Although the hotel needs a refurbishment I cannot fault the staff in any way. We had a couple of problems on our arrival but they were sorted out immediately to our satisfaction. Everywhere was spotless and our room was cleaned everyday.
The reception staff, housekeeping and especially the staff in the Barbary bar/Wisteria were excellent and ALWAYS found time to make our stay a little special. The apes, in our opinion, were great and although I realise that they can be a nuisance, they were very entertaining.
My own personal opinion is that the staff play a very important part at a hotel and I was not dissapointed at The Rock. Hope it gets a refurbishment in the near future and all, I am sure, will be well.

Dear SandUK, Thank you so much for your kind words. I am glad that you stayed with us on this visit to Gibraltar and sincerely hope that you will again. We have always considered our staff to be a great asset and I am glad that you seem to agree. Our impending refurbishment will add greatly to the mix and all will be more than well! Thank you again.

My husband and I have just had our sixth holiday in Gibraltar but our first time at The Rock. I must admit we were wondering what we were going to after reading some of the reports on Trip advisor but thankfully were very impressed. We enjoyed we every minute of our stay from the friendly welcome, fantastic room with the most amazing balcony and view. We could find nothing to complain about even when our toilet went wrong it was repaired whilst we were at breakfast. All in all fantastic time and we are looking forward to our next visit can't wait.
Thanks to everyone at The Rock

Room Tip: All rooms have a sea view ours was on the first floor with the giant balconies.

I have stayed here five times over past six years. Always found rooms clean and well maintained. Public areas very pleasant and clean. Twice in five stays I have been offered sherry at check in. ( not this time). Disappointed that sherry and whiskey was not provided on the room this time, despite this still being advertised on the website. I booked through www. Gibraltar4lesscom as cheaper but did email hotel directly first but email was not answered. Breakfast I love, lots of choice - avoid the scrambled eggs. Perfect location for sightseeing, relaxing etc.., staff helpful although restaurant staff could smile a bit more. Sure I will be back.

Dear Castigergirl, Thank you for your review. Offering complimentary sherry on check in is still very much a part of a stay at the Rock and therefore I apologise that this did not happen. Naturally, I can only follow up our lack of an e-mail reply with a personal e-mail address so if you would like to contact me outside of this forum I would be happy to respond. Our shhortcomings aside, I was happy to read that you would entrust us with another stay. Many thanks for that.

We returned yesterday from our fifth stay at the Rock hotel and are already talking about when to book to return!
Certainly there are one or two minor issues that need to be addressed. For instance we think the staffing levels in the Wisteria terrace need improving, the staff there are very good and work hard but there needs to be at least one more staff on duty there.
Now all the good points!
We always find that the reception staff are terrific, they are friendly, polite and knowledeable.
We always enjoy dinner in the main restaurant, it is good value and the staff are very good. A word here for our favourite waiter, Malik who is a
great character and very professional.
Our standard room was fine, it was clean comfortable with a nice little balcony with great views.
To sum up, this hotel is great value and we so like the general character and atmosphere of the hotel.
We booked with Essential Gibraltar who were very good so it was disappointing to see on their website when we got back home yesterday that they have ceased trading. While they are honouring existing bookings they are not accepting any new ones. Essential Gibraltar is part of Cadogan which has also ceased trading. They are part of the Bland group which also owns the Rock Hotel. So will have to use mygibraltar.com for our next stay at this venerable, wonderful old hotel.

Dear EnglandMikeB, Thank you for this critique. Your comments about the staffing levels on the Wisteria Terrace have been noted - this is an increasingly popular area of the hotel and your comments have some merit. Thank you for your kind words about reception and the restaurant - Malik is fast becoming one of our most mentioned by name staff members on this forum! We hope to see you again, via whichever method you choose to travel. Thank you once more.

We have just come back from a wonderful short break at this hotel, staff very polite nothing too much trouble. Sure if you look for faults you will find them, but hotels are in use 365 days of the year and they don't paint rooms after every visitor. We found the hotel to be full of character and we were glad it has retained most of it's colonial charm. We will return without doubt.

Room Tip: 4th floor excellent views.

Dear Watts100, You may have read eslewhere that in the new year we are about to embark upon a serious investment programme that will negate all of the decorative and infrastructure issues that our old building is facing. We intend to retain much of the character and colonial charm that you refer to you in your review. Whether you return in the interim or after our refurbishment we hope to have that same character in place. Thank you.

The hotel is at a great location. The views from the room were magnificent. How ever the room was in need of updating and fixing up. The staff was friendly and accommodating.
The food was adequate.

Dear 482850, Thank you for your posting. As documented in many of my responses we are embarking on a multi-million pound investment in the new year for which initial plans are underway. I was gllad to read that you thought our staff 'friendly and accommodating' but obviously dissapointed to read that you thought our food simply 'adequate' - with AA accolades for our restaurant I wonder whether this may have been an issue of style rather than quality.

We stayed for three nights and had a great time. The hotel has a great colonial feel, fabulous bar and terrace and great food. The breakfast is efficient and good quality and the rooms is well equipped. We found the location to be spot on, with spectacular views, near the cable car and botanical gardens and away from the noise and nuisance of the Main Street. The good thing about Gib though is everything is only 20 mins or so walk away. Overall The Rock is a charming hotel and the best hotel to stay in if you want a close encounter with the Apes. Loved it and would definitely return.

Room Tip: Get a room on the first floor and get two big balconies

Dear SteveM471, Thank you for your review. I was glad to read that not only did you enjoy the Rock Hotel, but that you also enjoyed Gibraltar as a destination. As you intimate Gibraltar's compactness does have its advantages. We hope that you do indeed make a return visit in the not too distant future.
