“we will be back!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2011

We returned yesterday from our fifth stay at the Rock hotel and are already talking about when to book to return!
Certainly there are one or two minor issues that need to be addressed. For instance we think the staffing levels in the Wisteria terrace need improving, the staff there are very good and work hard but there needs to be at least one more staff on duty there.
Now all the good points!
We always find that the reception staff are terrific, they are friendly, polite and knowledeable.
We always enjoy dinner in the main restaurant, it is good value and the staff are very good. A word here for our favourite waiter, Malik who is a
great character and very professional.
Our standard room was fine, it was clean comfortable with a nice little balcony with great views.
To sum up, this hotel is great value and we so like the general character and atmosphere of the hotel.
We booked with Essential Gibraltar who were very good so it was disappointing to see on their website when we got back home yesterday that they have ceased trading. While they are honouring existing bookings they are not accepting any new ones. Essential Gibraltar is part of Cadogan which has also ceased trading. They are part of the Bland group which also owns the Rock Hotel. So will have to use mygibraltar.com for our next stay at this venerable, wonderful old hotel.

Dear EnglandMikeB, Thank you for this critique. Your comments about the staffing levels on the Wisteria Terrace have been noted - this is an increasingly popular area of the hotel and your comments have some merit. Thank you for your kind words about reception and the restaurant - Malik is fast becoming one of our most mentioned by name staff members on this forum! We hope to see you again, via whichever method you choose to travel. Thank you once more.

We have just come back from a wonderful short break at this hotel, staff very polite nothing too much trouble. Sure if you look for faults you will find them, but hotels are in use 365 days of the year and they don't paint rooms after every visitor. We found the hotel to be full of character and we were glad it has retained most of it's colonial charm. We will return without doubt.

Room Tip: 4th floor excellent views.

Dear Watts100, You may have read eslewhere that in the new year we are about to embark upon a serious investment programme that will negate all of the decorative and infrastructure issues that our old building is facing. We intend to retain much of the character and colonial charm that you refer to you in your review. Whether you return in the interim or after our refurbishment we hope to have that same character in place. Thank you.

The hotel is at a great location. The views from the room were magnificent. How ever the room was in need of updating and fixing up. The staff was friendly and accommodating.
The food was adequate.

Dear 482850, Thank you for your posting. As documented in many of my responses we are embarking on a multi-million pound investment in the new year for which initial plans are underway. I was gllad to read that you thought our staff 'friendly and accommodating' but obviously dissapointed to read that you thought our food simply 'adequate' - with AA accolades for our restaurant I wonder whether this may have been an issue of style rather than quality.

We stayed for three nights and had a great time. The hotel has a great colonial feel, fabulous bar and terrace and great food. The breakfast is efficient and good quality and the rooms is well equipped. We found the location to be spot on, with spectacular views, near the cable car and botanical gardens and away from the noise and nuisance of the Main Street. The good thing about Gib though is everything is only 20 mins or so walk away. Overall The Rock is a charming hotel and the best hotel to stay in if you want a close encounter with the Apes. Loved it and would definitely return.

Room Tip: Get a room on the first floor and get two big balconies

Dear SteveM471, Thank you for your review. I was glad to read that not only did you enjoy the Rock Hotel, but that you also enjoyed Gibraltar as a destination. As you intimate Gibraltar's compactness does have its advantages. We hope that you do indeed make a return visit in the not too distant future.

We arrived at The Rock on October 27th as a group of 12 for a 3 night stay and were immediately made welcome in the reception and given a glass of sherry each while we waited to be checked in. We had an assortment of rooms on the first and fourth floor, all of which had the fluffy bath robes, rubber ducks and even a complimentary bottle of wine with 2 glasses as well...nice touch.
Breakfasts were enormous and enjoyable and the staff at the bar were brilliant in the evenings while we sat on Wisteria Terrace with our cigars and drinks. I know the hotel is now scheduled for a refit starting next year but it still has the best position on the rock and the views are amazing. You also have the regular visits from the apes every morning.
We are already making our booking for next April for our fifth visit to The Rock.

Room Tip: Fourth floor for good views

We stayed here because we got three nights for price of two. The hotel is pleasant and the rooms well equipped, quite roomy. We had great view over bay of Gibraltar. We had a small balcony too but unfortunately we were afflicted by traffic noise from the main road below which, because there is no soundproofing on balcony doors or windows (they are old fashioned metal critttal types) could not have been resolved. That said, there are fans. No wifi in the room so we had to go to lounge downstairs which was pleasant to sit in, with good views. Huge breakfast but we did feel a little out of place because it's rather old fashioned (you are asked to wait to be seated!) there is a nice outside terrace to sit in where you can get snacks. We saw a couple of apes on our balcony - a surprise as we were on fourth floor but I suppose we should not have been surprised! There is easy access to the rock of gib itself - about five mins to cable car then 5 mins to top. Quite good to be out of main part of town - buses frequent and are currently all free throughout gib except no 5 to frontier. This is not advertised and staff didn't tell us either, although there was plenty of other excursion info.

Dear CM, It is our intention to address the issue of double glazing or secondary sound-proofing when we refurbish the hotel. A refurbishment that is almost imminent. I apologise if being asked if you would wait to be seated seems a little old fashioned but that is our way at the Rock. That said, as times move on perhaps in our future development we can strike a different balance between old and new without losing some of the charm that many of our customers stay loyal to us for. Thank you.

Dear Lesley W, Thank you for your rather mixed review. Let me apologise for those aspects that you found disappointing and thank you for your kind words about our bar staff, who continue to do us proud. Regarding the worlwide phenomenon of bed bugs I can assure you that we have a more than robust pest control operation in place at the moment and we are doubling our efforts to combat the issue. Whilst naturally an unpleasant subject, to put it into perspective statistically relative to the many thousands of sleepers we have enjoyed this year, reports are actually quite rare. That said, we do not rest on our laurels and our aim is for zero. Thank you.
