“A little paint needed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

The Caleta has a stunning location on the East of the Rock next to the popular swimming area of Catalan Bay, which is accessed by a set of stairs near the swimming pool. The pool itself felt warm, but that may have been in comparison with the sea I had just come out from. The beach is clean, with some pleasant places to eat set behind it in the Genoese Village.
Access to Gib central is by bus, which is cheap and frequent (get a 'hoppa' all-day ticket). The bus drops you off at the main square, Casemates, from where you can take other buses or walk. If using a taxi, the road tunnel at the South of the Rock is open, but drivers may wish to...extend their journey by coming round the top (North) end even if coming from Europa Point.

The hotel is a little faded in appearance, and my room, while clean, was somewhat tired. The double bed consisted of two singles pushed together that were slightly different in height, but the biggest problem was the headboard. This was secured neither to the bed nor to the wall, and the slightest movement in bed produced sounds reminiscent of a more passionate encounter. Everything else worked fine, and the room was airy and pleasant with amazing views of the sunrise.

Brakfast was continental, a 'full English' being available for £££££s. Salt and pepper are not provided at each table, and tea is from a thermos of hot water carried by the waiter, or an urn, rather than a pot. Two of my rolls were actually stale and hard, but the rest of the breakfast was adequate even if the items aren't replenished quite as often as one could wish.

I did not sample any other food, but once again, as so often, it is the staff who make or break any hotel stay, and they were, in this case, superb. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

Room Tip: A sea view room is much nicer

Just returned The Caleta Hotel.... what a lovely hotel. seeing the reviews on TripAdvisor I thought we may have made a mistake wanting to stay at this hotel, but I was pleasantly surprised. The reason for the stay was to attend a close friends wedding that was being held at the Caleta Hotel.
We all had a fantastic time and what beautiful grounds... yes a few things needed a lick of paint but we definitely overlooked that.
The staff were amazing anything we needed they were there. Wali and Kevin were fantastic.
The room was perfect and very clean I do recommend getting up early to watch the sun rise.
The food was perfect

Room Tip: 414 and 418

We had a further excellent week here in September.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Caleta, just a few points to make.
Our comments are:-
The lady who appears to be in charge of breakfast does a really good job. The day she wasn't in, breakfast organisation seemed to fall to pieces.
I thought that we saw Mohammed (behind the bar) smile once, but I could have been mistaken.
No problem checking in and the room was ready and waiting.
Reception staff were helpful and friendly.
Bar menu has been the same for a few years - needs updating.
Internet access easily available, and free.
We'll probably be returning later in 2014

My wife and I had our wedding at The Caleta Hotel in August 13, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The suite that we had was excellent, very clean and well presented. The whole wedding party stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and the food throughout was absolutely lovely. Ideal location for a great beach and salt water swimming pool. We also returned in mid September for a friends wedding and it was just as good. We are planning on returning every year as a little reminder of our special day.

Room Tip: If your budget allows go for a suite.

This is my second time this year after staying many years at the rock hotel.
The caleta is a little jaded around the edges but you can overlook that.
as Its in a wonderfull location with great seaviews and a great staff and kept verry clean inside.

The brekfast is continetal if on bb but selection of pasterys breads cereals and meets and cheeses nd fruits so a wide choice but you can pay a extra £5 for a full english if required.
There our bar snacks and meals on the terrace and nunos the itallian provides a pasta lunch which is advertised on top of the menu but does not advertise which is a shame a set three course evening meal in the evening as this is a great saving if staying afew days .but in the bay below there our three good eaterrys.
The room on the main side have lift acces where the otherside have steps , make sure you request if staeps our no good.
Rooms our well decorated and have wonderfull seaviews od rock views, but be wary of the apes here do not leave doors open unatended or you might get a visit.
I relly like the relax feeling and helpfull and atentive staff there but not there I think they have the idea just right
Can not wait till april for our next visit.
This is a hotel you want to come back to again and again

We stayed one night to avoid border problems before our flight the following morning. We were allocated a room on the third floor (no lift) and struggled with our cases to it. It was tired and the air-con was disconnected, in fact the unit had been removed. I telephoned reception who spoke to a manager and they agreed to move us. We struggled back to reception (no offer from them to take our cases) were allocated another room, this time on the fourth floor, and right down the far end, so another struggle with our cases. The air con worked in this room (why didn't they allocated this in the first place?) but just like the other room it was very tired, and seemed to have been decorated by a short sighted painter (the web-site says "high quality decoration, my 3 year old grand daughter could do a better job).
there was no lift (have you ever heard of a four star hotel with no lift?) and the corridor had a tired carpet "runner". There was also a Fawlty Towers stair arrangement where you went down half a flight, crossed a landing and then went back up again, for no apparent reason, to the level you started at. Then you had two more flights to lug your cases up.

We then unpacked and went for a restorative drink in the bar, which was very reasonably priced. Unfortunately there was a Scottish wedding going on so the bar area was busy and lively to say the least..

We booked for dinner at Nemo and must say it was first class. Excellent service, good food and a lovely setting except that the balustrades were horizontal with just one rail so a child could easily slip through, if he wasn't climbing the rails in the first place. There was a large group on the next table with several young boys and the parents were constantly getting up and warning the boys of the danger of falling through onto the rocks several floors below. This is dangerous and would not be allowed in GB.

When we left the restaurant we got lost and found a lift, which appeared to serve another wing of the hotel which looked more modern. Perhaps this explains why there are good and bad reviews of this hotel?

As we made our way to our room the Scottish reception was getting into full swing and we were concerned about it keeping us awake during the night, however we were far enough away for it not to bother us.

Breakfast was a bit slow but not a problem and was good quality.

The website says "on site parking, no need to book". We were lucky and got one of the six places! If you don't get one it's a long walk from the nearest public parking place.

So my advice, by all means book a meal there, it's not cheap but well worth the money, but stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: Go for the newer wing, and make sure the air-con is working

On arrival had to wait over an hour for our room. Put this down to the party we arrived with being large but after reading other reviews this appears to be the norm. This gave us sometime to sit on the veranda, which over looks the sea.
We had an excellent room overlooking the sea. The room was a reasonable size and the bed was massive. The fan and the A/C unit worked really well, though the fan was a bit noisy. The bathroom was reasonable and the shower powerful.
The continental breakfast was very good and the staff worked very hard at keeping the food well stocked and the coffee and teas supplied to the diners.
The hotel is in a great location, right next to a beach and a 20 minute stroll to the town. It is in a quiet location, and even though there was a wedding reception going on during our stay, by closing the door between the bedroom and the main door all noise was blocked out.
Taxis on the rock are problematic and not run very well, it’s easier to catch the local bus or walk, though if booked through the hotel then they appear to arrive when needed.
All in all I loved Gib and loved the hotel. I couldn’t give the hotel a higher mark because there are areas of it that are in need of major TLC and I don’t understand why the management have not pushed for this to be done.
I would return to this hotel without hesitation and would recommend it to a friend.
