Myself and a friend did a two-day trip from Gibraltar to Ceuta in mid-August with Tomboy and it was absolutely fantastic!
Harley was our Skipper and when we arrived we found out that we were the only people booked in for those two-days, so we had exclusive use of the yacht (in spite of paying individual prices) - result!
As it was just us for those two-days, Harley explained that the agenda and activities were entirely down to us, so we explained that we'd like to see the Dolphins, do some snorkeling and get involved a little in the sailing where possible.
Neither of us had sailed before, but as Harley is a trained instructor that wasn't an issue at all and he immediately got us involved; explaining what different parts of the boat did, answering our questions and giving us instructions to help set sail. During the trip we helped with the fenders, steering, the sails, dropping and picking up the anchor - it was great!
On the way over to Ceuta we had lunch while anchored at a snorkeling site, then saw an enormous turtle when we continued our journey; my friend didn't get a good look so Harley spun the boat around to follow the turtle. Then, on the way back, we saw loads of dolphins (three different types apparently!) and revisited the snorkeling site.
When we arrived at Ceuta we spent some time in the pools, then Harley gave us a walking tour of some of the historical points of interest and then came with us to a restaurant he had recommended where you cooked your own meat on a hot rock. After that, we'd mentioned karaoke earlier in conversation so he pointed out some karaoke bars nearby the marina and ended up joining us for a few drinks and some singing, which was good fun!
There was a sore head or two the next day but that was no problem as Harley was already up cooking an amazing fry-up. The food throughout the entire trip was incredible; fresh fruit as soon as we set sail, then on to a homemade lasagna lunch, the fry-up followed the next morning and a chicken salad afterwards for lunch, then finally at the end of the trip, as we approached Gibraltar, he surprised us with a homemade chocolate banana cake he'd been baking in secret!
The trip really could not have been better and for the price we paid (£70pppd), it's outstanding value! If you think about the cost of getting to Algeciras, taking a ferry, booking in to a hotel and booking a Dolphin Tour with one of the Dolphin Companies, then this trip with Tomboy Sailing is already saving you money - and everything else (the sailing experience, snorkeling, all the gorgeous food, etc) is just a free bonus on top!
As I live in Gibraltar, I have other places I intend to visit on the coast of Northern Africa, for example Tangier, and I absolutely intend to make those future trips with Tomboy Sailing again after this trip to Ceuta - Can't recommend it enough!
(Tip for locals - Keep an eye on the Tomboy Sailing Facebook page & group, they quite often advertise this trip for £50pppd if they have last minute spaces available)
