“The friendliest place in town with exceptional decor and location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2011 via mobile

We stayed here for 7nights in room #201. The room was furnished with stylish and comfy antic pieces and despite its relatively small size (11,5 m2) we had everything we needed. Beside the double bed and a desk with a chair, the family - the owners - transformed the old fireplace into a small museum of antic lamps. The wash basin and sink was also in the room and the small attached bathroom had a very nice and big shower cabin along with a toilet. The room opened to the back, where the owner family lives, so there was no noise and traffic at night. We had long and satisfying sleep every night. From the window we got a splendid view to the magnificently beautiful cathedral day and night.

Wifi was free and available throughout the hotel and speed, reception were all excellent.

The best part is the owner family's almost unbelievable friendliness. They served good breakfast every morning included in the very reasonable room rate. Cakes, croissants, butter, jams, orange juice, fresh brown bread, cured meats were delivered to the table in the moment we sat down. They made great fried eggs, toast, tea and coffee at our convenience in a minute. One evening they even delivered champagne in ice bucket along with chocolate to our room. They went out of their way every time they saw us and were always ready to help in everything.

It was partly a business trip and my fianceé escorted me on that. We truly found a romantic place in the hotel and I could even prepare for my duties in the room as well.

The location is probably the best. Right at the corner of the historic downtown area, opposite the beautiful Alameda Park, 2 min. from the midieval streets and 5min. from the cathedral.

We highly recommend this place. It looks much pricier than it actually is. The friendly owners make this spotlessly clean and atmospheric hotel the best choice in town.

I stopped in Santiago as part of a 14 day motorbike tour from England to Jerez passing through Cantabria, Galicia and Portugal. I can honestly say this was the best place I stayed during the trip, for a few reasons: 1) the girls running the place are amazing, very friendly (but not intrusive) and always willing to help, they recommended places to eat and things to see and it was all spot on 2) the location is fantastic, 5 minutes walking from the cathedral 3) the room was very clean and well equipped 4) breakfast is great, eggs to order, a selection of cured meats, pastries, handmade bread, juice, coffee...

If you are lucky enough to find a room at Hostal Alonso while visiting Santiago don't think about it twice and book it as you will not be disappointed. But this is a small establishment that is very popular and is always fully booked, so be quick!

I just wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to the girls running Hostal Alonso, you do a fantastic job and you made me feel like I was at home... this was the only place out of the 12 hotels I stayed in during this trip that I really felt sad for leaving. I need to show Santiago to my wife soon and will definitely use your place to stay x

I stayed in hostel alfonso for 2 nights.it is centrally located. With this comes a little traffic noise. It is family run and they take time with their guests. It is spotlessly clean. there are lovely touches such as fresh flowers in reception. Well worth a visit

The owners couldn't be more friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. The bedrooms are small, but stylishly furnished, and spotlessly clean. Bear in mind you don't spend much time in the room anyway. Tasteful ornaments can be seen throughout the building, and there was always a lovely perfumed smell everywhere. Breakfast is mainly continental - croissants, cakes, toast, orange, tea, coffee, but they are more than happy to cook eggs for you also. It is ideally placed - just a few minutes walk from the town, which is so pretty. There is an open air public carpark 50m away, which is free overnight, and you pay for on a meter during the daytime (except siesta). The Cathedral is breathtaking and dominates the skyline. There are innumerable restaurants and cafes throughout the town, all offering varied menus, especially seafood. The tourist information office is in the centre of the town. There was a wonderful bustling atmosphere, which we thoroughly enjoyed being part of, by sitting at outside cafes and restaurants. The only slight downside was that most of the restaurant staff were miserable, and pushing to get you to finish your meal, often serving the next course whilst you were still eating. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hostal Alfonso, or the trip as a whole.

Room Tip: Car Park at top of road - 1 euro for 2 hours.

Having chosen Hostal Alfonso from previous reviews, we were not disappointed ! We had wished for something really nice and homely yet not too pricey after completing our Way of Saint-James and we found it.
The room was really, really beautiful, with a splendid view of the Cathedral. After our way, it was a real treat ! Location was perfect: very calm, yet at a very short distance from the centre. The breakfasts were plentiful and delicious (a criteria in our search, and something quite rare in Spain, we found !), but what topped it all was how nice and helpful the owners proved themselves to be. From running a load of our backpackers-laundry (!) to booking us a hairdresser appointment when we asked for advice, and making their best to adapt their breakfast menu once my poor stomach, having been fed with oil for too long a period, decided to go on strike. They really got out of their way to accomodate us, and despite the overall great quality of the accomodation, their own kindness was THE highlight of our stay.
We stayed there for 3 nights and hope we will have an opportunity to get back someday !

This very quaint and charming home-turned-hostel is located 3 minutes walk from the Cathedral, shops and restaurants. Across the road is a fantastic park widely used by joggers or those out for a leisurely stroll alike.
Our whimsically decorated bedroom located at the back of this old house had a perfect view of the cathedral. The private washroom was quite small and had signs of mould on the ceiling, but otherwise very clean.
The continental breakfast consisted of a delicious fresh out of the bakery oven bread, cold cuts, jams/jellies, juice and coffee/tea.
Sleep quality was rated at only average, as the ongoing ringing of the church bells were hard to ignore!
There is a public 24 hour car park about a 8 minute walk from the hostel - the owner will give you a ticket that allows you a discount when you go to pay...much cheaper than other car parks in the area.
This family run hostel offers excellent, friendly and efficient service!

Hostal Alfonso is just a block down from the main walking street in Santiago where the best bars and restaurants are located. It's far enough away though that there was no noise. Our room faced downtown and we actually had a pretty decent view of the cathedral. The room itself was a bit small but good value for what we got. Breakfast included, too. The place is very much family run, they live in the back and take care of business at the front so there's always someone close by. All in all, a good decision to stay there.
