We stayed at the Hotel San Clemente mainly because of the low off-season prices and because a lot of the other hotels in town are closed during January it's the month when most hoteliers take their annual holidays apparently.
While not actually in the Old Town, the hotel isn't really in the New Town either. The Rua San Clemente, on which the hotel is located, actually runs into the historic area, so everything is incredibly close by and easy to find.
We had a room on the middle floor of the hotel. It was neat and clean and generally very pleasant for a 2 star hotel. I don't think that the room itself could have been improved upon.
The main problem with the hotel, really, is the thinness of the walls. We could hear every word of our next door neighbours' conversations. It could have been really annoying if they had been noisy people, or night owls - but happily in this instance, they weren't.
I wouldn't recommend the buffet breakfast at 5€. It's okay (bread, cheese, churros, coffee, fruit, etc) but lots of cafes have breakfasts for roughly the same price and a much better atmosphere than the somewhat dull breakfast room/lounge at the hotel. Also, the same round of cheese and plate of meat pate appeared every morning - and the sliced cheese had a little bit of mold on it!
All in all, though, the Hotel San Clemente is a very well located budget hotel (we paid 60€ per night) in the off-season. I think that it might be a bit noisy in the summer, though, when all the rooms are full!
