“Just a regular hotel but location is ideal and the building is an architectonic jewel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

I am surprised that so many reviewers have called this hotel a luxury hotel because it is not. It's a hotel in a magnificent historic building, very well kept, and its location cannot be beaten but the service is unimpressive. For those who want a 5-star experience I would recommend Quinta da Auga, a "Relais and Châteaux" hotel , 4 km away from the Parador, with the best Spa that I have been to. Having stated that I must admit that I would stay at the Parador again if I were to visit Santiago de Compostela once more. We stayed in a superior room on the 4th floor. It was large, very large - the size of a king's room, clean, quiet and warm. The bed was very comfortable. We ate at Restaurante Enxebe. Don't do it! Food is average and service is indiferent. We had dinner on New Year's Eve at Restaurant dos Reis; a completely different experience - food was delicious and servers were attentive. When we finished our meal we were given a small bag with 12 grapes each and we ate them at Praza do Obradoiro at midnight because we decide to join the crowd that was gathered there waiting for the New Year. There was a party organized by the municipality with live music and fireworks. We had a lot of fun. Finally, I must add that you should not expect anything special for breakfast. There are many choices but nothing is really delicious and restocking was a big issue. People had to stay in line for a while to wait for bread - a very basic item, the first day that we were there.

A Hotel with 500 years carries naturally a lot of magic and mythical dreams. Located at the magnificent Praza do Obradoiro, the very very heart of Santiago de Compostela, and sided by the venerated Cathedral and by the beautiful palaces of Raxoi and San Xerome, the Parador Hostal dos Reis Católicos is definitely your address in this fantastic town. I can't imagine staying somewhere else while visiting Santiago de Compostela: perfect location and centuries of history, all together in a hotel built by the legendary Catholic Kings of Spain: Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabel of Castile. And that's it. As a hotel, I felt very disappointed. I have read many of the previous reviews about the Parador and thought they' were writing about a different hotel, not the same one I have stayed. I rated it as excellent due to its location, historical aspects and beautiful architecture - and only that. The hotel is overcrowded by the tour companies that lodge their noisy groups in its premises. Front Desk staff is correct and nothing more than that. I visited two restaurants: one very simple, with immense tables and loud groups. At the other restaurant, which is much better looking, the waiters ignored us for at least good ten minutes before approaching us and leading to a table. If we weren't starving, I think we would go somewhere else. Food is ok, nothing unforgettable. I believe that at hotel with a 500 year history, cuisine should be a top issue. And it isn't! Worst of all: breakfast. Not exactly the food, that is adequate, but the overall environment: you have to queue to get a table, you have to queue to reach the food counters. Understaffed, the few waiters run from one side to the other in order to help dozens of clients, as fast as they can. They look so tired and unhappy. For clients. it is very stressing to have breakfast at such a marathon climate. Wifi exists, but at a very low speed. I still think this is the right address at magic Santiago de Compostela. Enjoy the good side of the myth!

Room Tip: Our room was 114, at the ground floor. After two cloisters, we could easily reach it. Quite normal r...

Arriving in Santiago on an early flight, we went to the hotel intending to drop our bags, but were given our room straight away. This was typical of the service from beginning to end which was excellent, discreet and friendly. Our room was spacious, beautifully furnished, comfortable and quiet - double windows, shutters and heavy curtains kept out the sound of the cathedral bells.

The location is superb, and extremely convenient for all that there is to see and do in the town, and to get back to to escape the torrential rain! The hotel doubles as a fascinating museum with vivid descriptions of the building's former life as a pilgrim hostel, orphanage and hospital.

Food at this hotel was excellent with four choices in each course on the vegetarian menu (mains included delicious and wholesome rice, pasta and bean dishes), and an extensive range of dishes for non-veggies.

Of the many Paradors I've stayed in, this is up there with the best.

I had wanted to stay in a Parador for many years but never got round to making a booking until a recent trip to Santiago de Compostela - I'm converted! This hotel is stunning! The staff we met were friendly and professional and seemed to take great pride in what they were doing. It is definitely worth following the guided tour of the hotel given to you on arrival in the form of a map/brochure which gives you the history of this amazing building. The (standard) room and bathroom were exceptionally clean and incredibly spacious (I'm still not sure why bath mats were put on the side of the bed when the bed was turned down, I really should have asked!). The breakfast buffet was sensational; juicy fresh and tasty fruit (nothing out of tin!), hams, cheeses, pastries, hot food, cereals etc - a vast choice and it was delicious! A wonderful 5 star experience.

The Parador experience in Spain is a unique one; elegant, historic, in many cases, majestic & opulent. The Hostal Dos Reis Catalicos is the crown jewel of Paradores, imposing and regal, it's location on the square adjacent to the Cathedral de Santiago is ideal. Arriving to our final destination in torrential rain,we entered the gorgeous lobby dripping wet and were ushered quickly to our rooms. The bathrooms are luxurious, and the bedrooms are roomy and very comfortable. The bar is welcoming and makes a mean gin & tonic. Breakfast is a wonderful affair, replete with choices for every appetite. The staff is a bit formal & stiff, but this seems to be the case at paradores, a small price to stay in a place echoing with history.

We loved our 5 day stay at the hotel. It was superb. The bedroom was exceedingly comfortable and spacious, with plenty of wardrobe space and a luxurious bathroom. I had a mobility scooter and there was an alcove outside the room to park it, although it could have fitted in the room easily. The room was very quiet and we heard no noise from the street. The restaurant was outstanding but we had a couple of nice meals in town as well.

Although the standards were very high, we didn't feel uncomfortable. We were able to relax just as if we were at the home of a favourite uncle.

I'd love to go back.

We stayed here for three nights and the location could not be better, however the service in the bar was very poor. They appear to be very understaffed with staff trying to do there best in an impossible situation. The main restaurant was good with excellent food and OK service. The breakfast buffet was very average. The staff did not appear happy and it was apparent there were management issues. The rooms were quite small and dark but OK.
