“A privilege to stay here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

We stayed here for one night at the end of the Camino. It was an absolute privilege to stay in such a beautiful historic building. We enjoyed walking round looking at the internal courtyards and reading about the history.

Our room was lovely, though hilariously the maids tried to come in to turn down the beds around 10.15 when we were already in bed - we had been up since dawn and cycled 50k so weren't on Spanish time.

The buffet breakfast was generous and well-staffed (unlike the experience of others and unlike our subsequent experience in the Baiona parador where breakfast was chaotic).

It is expensive but worth it.Standard room still very special. We overlooked back street so a little noisy what with piper etc.Bed turned down.Loved exploring using plaques.Very nice staff - not snooty.Couldn't justify 38 euro menu so ate in local tapas place.Excellent breakfast as you would expect. Our first parador experience and not the last.

Room Tip: You probably pay more for room overlooking courtyard

Stayed here only for a night was we were on the Camino D'Santiago walk and stop-over.
Great atmosphere and breakfast as well as fewl of living in a palace. Wasn't stuffy and nice location.
Lovely dining Restaurant but do take note of the huge portions they serve. But good value and quality.

While touring Portugal and Northern Spain we made a point of staying at the Pousada hotels in Portugal and the Paradors in Spain. These are hotels owned by their respective governments and are located in historical sites. This particular hotel was located right on the plaza with Saint James cathedral and the endpoint of the famous Camino pilgrimages. As far as location goes, this could not be beat. It was a bit noisy when the pilgrims were being greeted by an impromptu band but that quieted down by evening. The hotel itself was old and a bit musty but had its own historic charm. The rooms were adequate, staff was acceptable and morning buffet was good.

We stayed here for 4 nights in June and we bitterly regretted booking it.

Yes the building is old and has a fantastic location but this doesn't make up for surly disinterested staff, none of whom could speak any English apart from some of the reception staff who were helpful.

The root of the problem is the complete absence of any visible management. We had breakfast on four mornings and not once did we see anyone in charge. The few staff in the breakfast room scurried here and there, all the time avoiding eye contact with guests. The orange juice dispenser ran out three of the four mornings we were there. You had to stand in the way of a staff member to alert them to the empty dispenser; the man I stopped just grunted, turned on his heel and walked off. Eventual he did return with more orange juice.

Apart from reception, none of the other staff could speak any English.

Finally a tip. Don't fall for the over 55 disount as we did. While you get a small discount, the room will be an inferior room in a poor location. Ours looked out on a wall. It's just a way of selling off poor rooms at a discount. I can't believe I fell for it.

Simply this hotel is not worth the money, even with its great location.

Room Tip: Don't tick the over 55 discount. You will get an inferior room

I was in Santiago 6 years ago, and it was a very different city then. After the movie "The Way," it's become a much busier tourist destination, and as a result the city is overly crowded, and the Parador staff seemed a little overwhelmed. Check in took a long time, they couldn't find a porter, and they require you to pay for parking (18 Euros a day). The beds were not as comfortable as in other Paradors, and there was a TON of noise outside our window late at night and early in the morning. The staff weren't nearly as friendly as other Paradors we stayed in, and it just wasn't as pleasant as I'd grown accustomed to Parador's being.

WARNING: as other reviewers pointed out, this place is IMPOSSIBLE to find. Our GPS got us into trouble going down prohibited streets, and we had to ask a policeman for help to even find the place. Really difficult, and stressful.

Room Tip: Get a room on one of the interior courtyards, or you'll be kept up with the street and square no...

This is one of these towns that is out of the way, but so historical that it should be on everyone's Spanish itinerary. It's almost the end of the road for travelers on the Camino de Santiago (many go on to Muxia or Finisterre or both). You can really only appreciate the town by reading about the Camino before you leave home, and following it a bit across northern Spain, seeing the signs, pilgrims, and a few notable sights along the way. At the very least, watch the Emilio Estevez-directed film "The Way" from two years ago and you'll get the idea. Most of this is virtually unknown to American tourists.
The hotel itself is part of the Parador system in Spain and is quite popular so reserve in advance. As with many Paradores, it is a restored historic property, this time a hospital built by Ferdinand and Isabella in the 15th century to care for pilgrims completing the Camino. It is grand in scale, public areas and front areas very beautiful, and directly adjacent to the Cathedral across the plaza. The rooms here are quite large, very clean and have up to date amenities. You can wander about the property and find courtyards, an old chapel and the like. Wi-fi in the rooms is spotty, but accessible from the common room adjacent to the lobby. Breakfast is buffet style and quite good, and the less formal dining room (there are two) was also welcoming and good. As is usual for many Paradores, early bookers over 55 years of age can get a substantial discount off the rate making this property a great value. This particular Parador comes highly recommended.
