I was hugely disappointed with this hotel. We had numerous issues and problems the most serious of which related to security but I'll start from the begining.
We booked the hotel several months in advance via the local tourist board on-line. We specifically requested a pool room and paid 170 Euros for the first 3 nights and then 155 Euros for a further 4 nights. That's fairly standard for 4 star and you expect it to be just that - unfortunately the Antemare can never be considered 4 star - it my opion it is nothing more than 2/3.
We arrived late on a Saturday evening (18.30ish). The Antemare is located in a residential area so all around are private houses and if you have a hire car to park it's a nightmare! The hotel showed no interest in parking assistance. It's also about 15 minutes brisk walk from the town centre so you would also expect it to be quiet! We were shown to a room on the first floor that instead of overlooking the pool overlooked an abandoned building site of a house and the tatty rear garden of the neighbouring property - real 4Star quality - NOT! I immediately complained about the room allocated but the hotel refused to move us. The room allocated was quite bland. Very small and very basically fitted. The 'Satellite' TV only had Spanish channels available and no radio stations. You don't go on holiday to watch TV but it's nice to catch up with news and or other channels when you are in your room/getting changed etc. A 4 star hotel should have something more than local Spanish TV available! The bathroom was very small and had no extractor fan! Lighting is okay but could be better as I like to see clearly when shaving! The shower/bath tiles were old and needed re-grouting. This gave the appearance of being dirty and you don't expect that in a 4star. The air con has no remote. It's either on or off. As everyone knows you need a cool room to sleep in and we left it on when we went out and came back to a 'crisp room'. However, often in the night you need to turn it off/down. This meant getting up and switching it off which was very frustrating! Now we come to the serious part - The hotel is built into a slight slope/hill which meant it's staggered. Our room was on the first floor but the balcony was effectively on the ground floor, being just 1.5 metres (approx 4') from the ground. It also meant it was right next to a walkway and therefore our room had no privacy. The room provided a safety deposit box but at I was astonished to find they charged 3 Euros a day for it! 4 star? I think not! You also have to pay a 25 Euro deposit! The safety box was not large enough to hold all our valuables - lap top and camera so they had to stay out of it. You can therefore understand my utter amazement that when we got back from the beach on the 1st day of the holiday the cleaner has stupidly and incompetently left the patio doors unlocked and open to the elements. Anyone could have climbed onto our balcony and stolen our valuables. I was furious and complained bitterly. The following day the maid did the same thing and continued to do so for 4 of the 7 days we were there. I threatened to call the police but the hotel just ignored us. They simply did not care. Once was bad enough but 4 times was inexcusable. I've never worried so much about my valuables. We overheard the hotel had been broken into on our last day too! I'm just glad it was not our room!
In addition to all the issues above, I should also mention the annoying parrot that is kept in a cage in the neighbouring property - right next to our room. This parrot will be guaranteed to wake you up! It scretched and scretched from early morning till early evening. We complained but the hotel said they could do nothing. My advice is DO NOT ACCEPT A ROOM FACING THE WATERFALLS - you'll risk losing your personal effects and having a sleepless night.
The last 'negative' was the 'wireless' internet connection. I was astonished to hear that the charge for using this service was 6.5 Euros an hour! I thought we were in 2008, not 1998! This hotel needs to learn a lot about service and what 4 star means.
I do need to be fair though and point out the positives.. Well the pool is fantastic (just been refurbished). Lovely and clean and deep enough to dive into. The only complaint was when I went down for a swim at 19.20 it was closed! In summer I think that's too early. The hot tub was okay but kept cold 27c - It needs to be 35cish minium to enjoy it. Clearly the hotel was trying to economise!
Breakfast is continental and is good. There was a good variety of foods - cereals, juices, pastries, fruit, breads etc. Also bacon and sausages (not British type - Processed type!).
Overall I rate this hotel well below average as 4 star. Security is something you can not compromise on so my overall advice would be DO NOT STAY HERE. There are much better hotels in the centre of town.
