The landscape and scenery at Montserrat were wonderful; the mountain itself is so different than the ones surrounding it. The rocks are smooth rounded pillars keeping guard; it was really quite fantastic! The drive up you won't forget, either (if subject to motion sickness, take your medication at the prescribed time beforehand!). Our guide recommended the honey and cheese concoction the street vendors sell; when we saw the lines at the cafeteria, we opted to purchase that with some bread and head up the funicular for a picnic lunch. That was really the way to go. We (us and another couple) escaped a lot of crowds, got an awesome view, and had a really different lunch! Because we were on a time limit (arrived with a group), we didn't have time to explore the top, but headed back down to see the Monastery. Honestly, we should have stayed at the top. The building was overflowing with crowds, and the interior was like the "overdone" churches you'll see in Barcelona; the line to see the Black Madonna was incredible. The landscape, however, was not to be had elsewhere, and I was sorry to have "wasted" time in seeing nothing new in the Monastery rather than having explored the surroundings more. But all in all, highly recommended!
