“Excellent Scenery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014

You need one whole day to enjoy the mountain. I'm here because I want to see the Black Madonna. In Plasa Espanya station you find a small desk which you can use either using train+cable car or train+rack railway. I use train from Plasa Espanya-Barcelona to then use Cable Car up to the mountain. Beautiful scenery from Barcelona to Cable Car station and from Cable Car station to the Monastery. I queued for about one hour to see and touch the Black Madonna, but along the queue you can find some beautiful statues of saints.. It's worth also to use the cable car to go up to the Sant Jeroni and enjoy the beautiful scenery or do some trekking back to the monastery.

“More of a hassle than it's worth”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2014

While the views atop Montserrat are breathtaking, the rest of the visit was slightly disappointing. First of all, getting to Montserrat (on your own), is very tasking. You take about an hour train ride to either the cable car, or the funicular…and be sure if you have a combo ticket, you know exactly which train stop to get off for either one of these. My husband and I made the mistake getting off at the cable car train stop, only to find out our "combo" ticket only included the funicular. I thought it included both. Because we didn't want to wait another 45 min - 1 hour to take the train 1 stop down, we had to pay another 12 EUR (total) for a 5 minute ride up to the top of the mountain. We had decided to do the audio guide, which was the most confusing audio guide I have ever experienced. There were a handful of sights marked with a number to follow on the audio guide, otherwise, you had kind of follow a map that wasn't particularly logically laid out, and supplement the audio guide by reading a booklet that they had given with the guide. I would say that the audio guide was most helpful if going to the museum, as the artwork was at least numbered along with the audio guide.
On our return, we decided to take the funicular down, since that is what was included with our ticket. First of all, it runs very infrequently, and we weren't able to make not 1, but 2 trains returning to Barcelona. The first funicular we took down the mountain, only stopped at the base, and didn't continue to the 2nd stop, which was where the train station is. We had to get off, and wait another 20 minutes or so for the next funicular to come down, which would continue on to the train station.
All in all, it was just more of a hassle than it seemed to be worth. The site was nice but not overly impressive, the museum was just okay, there are virtually no dining options, and getting there and back is quite a hassle. I had wished that we spent the day back in Barcelona, enjoying other sights.

“Stunning scenery, breathtaking buildings!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

The journey by car to get up to Montserrat is an experience all of it's own! Very twisty, winding roads and incredible views. If you chose to travel by train it takes you right to the Monastery, some of the paths are a little steep so some might find it more difficult that others when maneuvering around. I would say it's best to arrive at 10ish as it gets busy quickly. When I visited there was a choir performing inside. The whole place was crammed full of people but there was still a peaceful atmosphere and a huge queue to touch the Black Madonna.

If you are feeling fairly fit, then DEFINITELY take the funicular railway up to the mountains and take the long walk around the hills. Not one for those who are not keen on heights, basically there are no barriers and some of the paths wear away beneath your feet! But it's a great adventure!

The train journey, cable car and rack railway. And the food in the hotel restaurant were all brilliant.
