After reading the rave reviews on this restaurant, and it being the number one in all of Barcelona, we had to book a table. Our verdict is it was indeed very good, but not easily the best restaurant in Barcelona.
This is a restaurant you go to to experience unique tastes, maybe to expand your palate a little. They do two fixed menus, traditional and surprise. We chickened out from the surprise menu and went traditional, and after seeing the surprise menu at the table next to us, both were equally as good.
Every dish had a very strong flavor, which might not be for everybody. There always tended to be two ingredients that went well together, and then some crazy third one which would dominate your entire palate and cancel out the other two. As an example, there was a dish of seared tuna, with red pepper puree, both delicious, and then a miso soup seaweed sauce, which totally brought the sea flavor back to a perfectly beefy and fresh piece of tuna. We learned to avoid the crazy third dimension in every dish and that worked out just fine.
The most interesting part was the Szechuan button flower bud which felt like a 9 volt battery on your tongue, followed by a deliciously tangy pear puree granita. That little flower was amazing and amplified your taste buds' sensitivity to all that was tangy, especially the wine.
The staff there were perfect. They were very informative, attentive, and friendly. They even stored some tuna I had just bought at the boccaria in their fridge for me to keep ot fresh.
Overall, I would not say this was the best restaurant in Barcelona, but well worth the experience.
