Description: Among the three hundred diners that fill this 30-year-old restaurant every day, you may spot the King of Spain, movie stars, and politicians. Botafumeiro has to be a well-oiled machine to keep all and sundry happy and coming back for more, and it does. The decor is so trad, with wood railings and banisters, white table linens, and nautically-themed art and objets. The menu focusses on the sea, try fruits de mer for two to start, followed by anglerfish fisherman's stew with white beams or one of the barbecued fish, then a dessert of Belgian chocolate volcano with chocolate sherbet. Wine list is an ambassador for Spanish wines.

“Shellfish experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

Good quality, however a bit overpriced. The shellfish plate (mariscada) contained about everything and was perfect. One plate serves at least 3 persons!

“Service could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

We found the menu a little difficult to understand and the head waiter who took our order was unhelpful and showed his irritation with our lack of understanding. The food we did manage to order was all excellent and the food being served at other tables looked very impressive. If you are a seafood expert and don't mind paying a high price for it, then give this place a try. If your looking for good service in a friendly atmosphere with more than fish on the menu try somewhere else.

“Superb food and setting. Some service lapses”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

This was an awesome place. Very beautifully laid out with large tables for two diners and bigger ones for larger parties. Fish and shellfish are the stars here. My wife and I had great appetizers, she had the lobster salad ($42) and I had the tuna over salad ($17) both excellent. We then opted for the giant grilled shellfish platter. This was the biggest I've ever seen. It included lobsters, crabs, mussels, clams, scallops, calamari, spiny crab legs and big and small shrimp. We had a wonderful Cava aperitiff and a bottle ot the local Demi white wine which was delicious. The food was fresh and tasty. My wife had the grand marnier souffle set afire at table side. I had almond cake which was a bit too dense for my taste, and we washed it down with cappucinos. The entire bill, including all drinks and tips was about $317. Yes, you'll pay but what a dining experience. The waiter did not replace a dirty napkin, and only brought the tools needed for shellfish when we asked. He also forget the bowl for the shells. He was helpful, though, patiently explaining the various dishes.

“Not worth the hype”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

I heard that this was the place to dine in Barcelona - boy was I steered wrong. The food was fair and way over priced. Tried the paella (missing flavor) the shrimps al ajillo (small portion - big price). You can leave this off of your things to do list.

“Stunning”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Stunning place to eat, the restaurant was very big and grand. The food was expensive, the starters ranged from 8 EUR to 26 EUR and the mains were around 13 EUR to around 82 EUR for lobster. The food was divine, my friends ordered a sea food platter which was extremely fresh. Great place to eat, for friends and couples I would go and eat, but personally I wouldn't say it was suitable for families with young children.
