“Basic - yes, chic - depends!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2010

We stayed at the chic and basic for the first time, the pictures and comments online made it look like the perfect place to stay. The concept is great, as is the location only 5 minutes from the barri gotic in a comparably calm pedestrian street. The kitchen with 24h coffee, tea, bread, drinks and so on is perfect - the lounge are close by even offers free internet. However the good things ended when we went into our room, again great idea and concepts but a little cleaning might do the trick. Sheets with stains, leaky faucet. Ok for the price though and ok enough for sleeping. One good matress, the other only bearable with painkillers...

We loved our stay in the hotel. Guests are very independent from reception and can get in and out without having to leave keys and other stuff that happens at traditional hotels. The location couldn't be better: you can walk to most parts of touristic interest (and I'm not a big fan of walking!). And it's close to nice shops... =)
You can grab snacks at the kitchen, and we found it very helpful - we didn't have breakfast or dinner there, but certainly feel it's a possibility if you're on a budget.
The staff was nice and friendly, but we found that it's best to rely on the travel guides for tips and directions - I believe they were new at the job.
We would definetely stay there again.
The rooms really are small - but clean, quiet and confy - so who cares?

This is not your usual hotel. It is a hostel, which means it shares a building with other tenants. The hotel is on the first & second floors, with apartments above, and retail is on the ground floor. Everything else is pretty much the same. The staff was friendly and helpful, and more importantly, spoke English. The hotel location is very good for almost everything. There is a nice table/seating area in the lobby, with a refrigerator full of wonderful juices, jams, yogurt, ham & cheese. Cookies, dry cereal, and fruit are always on the table. There is a small adjoining room with a dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster, sink, etc. All of this is for guest use, 24/7. It is great for a quick breakfast before you hit the sites and a nice snack when you return. There is also a desktop computer for guest use. The rooms are compact. Even the large rooms are not big (welcome to Europe). The layout was good, but do not expect much privacy. These rooms are not good for children, for many reasons. The setup is more suited for adults. The shower was fine, but the toilet was cramped. The hotel can be noisy, depending on your room location. The rooms and the hotel were clean and well maintained. Overall, it was fine, and I would stay there again. Someone did spend some time on the design, and the interior does look chic. It was a nice change of pace. Also, there is a fantastic tapas restaurant right around the corner called longa de tapas, restaurant vinateria. It was so good we went back there a second time before we left Barcelona. Highly recommended.

To summarize the experience in a few words – it felt like a guest house in India which is designed in style.
My boyfriend and I stayed there for two nights in October. The only thing good about this place is its location, which is near the Rambla and Placa Catalunya.
We found the room absurdly small, there is no place to move once the suit case is in the room, only 30 centimeters separate the bed on one side from the bathroom/toilet and on the other side from the wall.
The sink is in the bed area and not inside the bathroom/toilet area and there is no shelf or other room to place the bathroom tools. The bathroom/toilet area is the same as the bed area and has a sliding door (so only one of the bathroom or toilet is closed at the same time). Additionally, there is a space (gap) between the bathroom/toilet wall and the ceiling, which means that it’s not completely closed, and since it’s in the same area as the rest of the room (which is actually the bed) – one can imagine the smell/noise implications….
Our room was close to the chill area – which constantly plays chill-out music even at 3AM at night!! Additionally, since the room is so small, the bed is practically in the corridor, and we were able to hear the people at the chill area as they came there to eat and hang-out. (By the way, when we stayed the fridge was quite empty.)
Additionally, the reception at the TV was bad and the selection of channels was quite poor.
Bottom-line: absolutely no value for money! [You can get much better hotel for approximately the same price]

My boyfriend and I stayed in room 3 for 3 nights on our first trip to Barcelona. We had seen the pictures and reviews on TripAdvisor and other websites, and decided that for the location it seemed like a good find. However when looking for it at 11pm after travelling all day to get there it was a bit difficult to find as there's no signs outside! It's in a residential apartment block and a hidden gem! The room was a decent size, with a king-size double bed, TV, shower/toilet cubicle, and even a port to plug in your ipod to the sound system (you need to ask at reception for the lead). The chill out area was comfortable and free snacks on offer all day - but it depends what the staff pick up in the morning as to what there is! We didn't interact much with the staff, but when we did they were pleasant and helpful enough. The location was great - less than 10mins walk to Las Ramblas and the Placa de Catalunya, so for us sightseeing and bar-hopping during our few days it was perfect! The view from the balcony was great, and we didn't find it noisy at all even with the windows open, which suprised us. Cost was perhaps the only bad thing about it, but for staying in the city centre in Barcelona in June we thought 99 euros a night wasn't all that bad

Hotel had an fun look to it although medium size room (especially the bathroom) was pretty small. Access to free snacks 24/7 was a great addition. We didn't interact much with staff but when we did they were friendly and helpful. General location is good but we found it was usually about a ten minute walk to get to the train station that we needed to take to get to most places we wanted to go. Also about a ten minute walk to Las Ramblas where most of the restaurants are.
