“Terrific hotel, great staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

I would highly recommend Solyk to anyone staying in Barcelona. The staff was amazing each time we asked for help - we received fantastic meal recommendations and helpful tips when trying to see the sights. The location was in the center of everything.

This was my second time staying at Solyk. My first experience was faultless as I was dealing with one of the girls there who was super nice and helpful, however, when trying to book this time I was looking to rent a couple of rooms but didn't get a reply on the second room from Phillipe so my friends had to book elsewhere.

Then once I arrived I met a gay guy at the reception (possibly an owner) who had a bee in his bonnet from the get go - talk about highly strung! So you can imagine his reaction when I reluctantly had to ring the bell at 4am after being locked out (my sister had our only key and couldn't get through to her). This annoyed him to no end... 'When are you leaving???' ME: ....'ah, tomorrow at 11am...' 'GOOD!' and the next day when I asked to leave my luggage there for my flight in 3 hours (a service they'd normally provide) he said 'NO! There are lockers in Calalunya!'...Ok...so I went to Catalunya thinking he must mean the station, but to my disappointment there weren't any there, so I was sent on a wild goose chase on various train lines for 1.5 hours to find the station with the lockers. Turns out there is a lock up NEAR Catalunya, about 10 mins walk away from SOLYK! Would have been nice if he had elaborated.

So if you don't mind a bad attitude, the guest house itself is clean, modern, the rooms have a basin each, with about 3.5 bathrooms to 9 or so rooms, you don't really notice the other guests being there, the rooms are quite quiet and dark, the beds are comfortable and it's in a good location with a supermarket on the corner, but there are no kitchen facilities. It's still good value for money.

Philippe the hotel Manager (Who looks and dresses like a tourist!)
From La Rambla road Turn and keep left when you Cosmo eating place and you will find it easy.
At the heart of the Gothic Quarter, old building like most of the rest and talking to other travelers possibly the best location. Close to La Rambla road going to the Seaport- 5 minutes walk, main road 5 minutes walk, wonderful market 10 minutes, and metro 10 minutes, lost of ~Tapa bars here, Tip avoid the one nest to hotel: not the best one! discovery is the word and get good walking shoes on! Barcelona is a walking city. Hotel is in old Gothic court so do not expect a modern building, Room was nice, clean, bed cosy, good sleep, bad point: you have to share bathroom, did not bother me since was next door. So ask for room next to bathroom. Room had wash basin which helped. Philippe is french and a great host, well fantasic.
Tips:
Wear walking shoes you will need them.
Explore and discover some great shops, bars, tappas,
Avoid main tourist areas price are high!
Do visit Antoni Gaudi house 30 minutes walk A wonderful visit.
Great ~Tappas gourmet food in Born area - (Mercat Princesa market map 33)
Hire a Bike if you hate walking.
Do not be put off by the Graffitic on closed shop shutters = better when shops are open.
Great bars for solo travellers too.
Don't forget to print you travel ticket - no printed ticket. no flight boarding, no printing facility!
Do not over shop since only one bag allowed any extra bags may be charged.
Avoid picket pockets on Metro - Fact 20% lose money, easy pickings.
Barcelona breach 1 hour by ferry cost €12 return, last ferry 7pm
Some bars on Harbour by cinema and fun park for kids

We stayed in Sol y k for four nights. It is situated on a narrow street in the 'Barri Gotic' and we walked passed it the first time! The room was clean and plenty big enough for our needs. It had a sink and a balcony but no wardrobe. The shutters kept all the light out at night but it was quite noisy with the shutters of nearby shops and people passing by. On one night we were woken up by very noisy guests returning late to the room next to ours. The individual bathrooms were spotless and close to the bedrooms. The staff spoke good English and gave helpful advice on where to visit, eat and store our luggage when we returned to Barcelona a few days after leaving Sol y k. There are nearby restaurants and bakeries that open early. We would recommend to anyone on a budget who values cleanliness and reliability and wants to stay near Las Ramblas.

The rooms on the top floor have a beautiful view outside of the city. We also stayed in one of the rooms on the 4th floor and it was very nice. The people at Solyk are so friendly and accommodating. If you stay in the gotic area, this is a good location. Try to avoid staying on La Ramblas or Career Ferran unless you have sound proof windows.

A friend and I stayed here for two nights and we really enjoyed it. It was clean, comfortable, convenient, and a great value. Located right in the Gothic Quarter, we had a balcony from our room overlooking the tiny streets. The bathrooms were always very clean and Maria, the young lady who works at the reception, was very helpful and kind. She gave us great advice on local spots to check out. If/when I return, I will come back here for sure. Also, for all the rooms being sold out, we never saw any of the other guests. Everyone is pretty respectful of each other here. The only thing is that there is no A/C, so we had to sleep with the balcony doors open for air. The noise was pretty loud throughout the night, so download a noise machine App or bring ear plugs. It did the trick.
