“Ideal, great location, outstading, above all standards”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

The Hostal is in a fantastic location, in the middle of where the life is, near Passeig the Gracia, Placa De Catalunya, 5 minutes walk from Rambla. Perfect. The hostal itself is a hidden gem. Rooms are very well decorated, with antique stuff, you can see the attention to every detail. It is above all the standards you can think about, it is not the normal usual hotel, is much more. Like living in the past, difficult to explain, better to go there and experience. Stuff is very helpful and can speak English, is very fast in giving help and advices for food (outstanding hints) and shopping or whatever need you may have. Can only recomend the place. If I have to list some minor sides, I have to say that as I was travelling with two little daughters, especially one of 18 months, I was quite worried that could she break something at each step she was making, the corridor, the rooms, everything is stuffed with nice antique, old stuff (and fragile.....!), in addition there is not an elevator, so bringing up and down the push chair was not so effortless, by the way it is only one store and the stuff can easily help on that. Another minor detail regards the bed, I am 1,9 meter height, the bed was just right, in comparison with other hotels are a bit smaller, but all the other hotels have not for sure the charme, the appeal of Antic Espai. At the end would say wonderful place for couple, singles, friends, families but would not fully recomend for parents with small children (let's say below 2 years). Recomended. Standing Ovation. I will for sure come back in the future.

My friend and I had a 3 night girly catch up in Barcelona and stayed at this Hostal. We were both delighted and enchanted with every aspect of the accommodation, decor, location and our hosts, Sergio and Abel were both easy on the eye, helpful and charming.
What more could two fussy ladies ask for!

The Hostal is packed to the brim with interesting antiques, pictures and nick nacks, the owners clearly don't consider 'where will I put it', they find a place no matter. Every time you walk past an area you notice something different.

Rooms are compact, but with plenty of storage, bathrooms clean, with nice touches, beds comfortable, and each room is individually fabulous. We looked in all the rooms and I'd be happy to sleep in any one of them again.

Centrally located, just a few minutes walk away from Las Ramblas, we found a great little coffee shop just round the corner and an equally good bar which served great food.

If you like quirky, out of the ordinary things, this is THE place for you. Totally unique.

Room Tip: Room 104 has a double and a single bed and opens on to the fabulous little terrace.

Brilliant! Our room in this antiques-stuffed bed and breakfast opened onto a terrace. We ate a good cereal, yoghurt, toast, cheeses and fruit in the company of caged finches and budgeriagars and potted begonias. Sergio and his assistant Muhammed speak good English. Both are attentive to their guests needs . The maids are efficient. In fact I doubt that I have stayed in such spick and span surroundings. Hostal l'antic espai is centrally located. If you are looking for an eccentric holiday experience, this comfortable boutique b&b has no equal. (I particularly loved the little red bows decorating my shower cap.)

Loved this hotel (and loved Barcelona). The hotel was very clean, friendly, safe and stylish - the attention to detail made it special. Very central - could walk everywhere. I stayed here with my 23 year old daughter and we would both highly recommend this hotel - maybe not for people with small children or people who don't like antiques and curios - but anyone who hates impersonal, chain hotels and likes individual style would love it. We felt at home straight away and appreciated the little touches, such as the china cups for morning coffee, the toiletries and bathrobes provided, the finger print entry doors, the beautiful terrace and the friendly staff. Can't wait to stay again.

The bottom line: for anyone looking for a reasonably priced, centrally located and clean place to stay in Barcelona, this place is hard to beat. However, it is not a hotel: the clue is in the name. There is no elevator, no 24 hour concierge and no bland uniformity in decor or service. If you want those things, look elsewhere and be prepared to pay more.

We arrived while the usual staff were out, but with a little Spanglish were able to explain ourselves to the maid, who showed us to our room and, moments later, surprised us with complimentary sangria.

While the antique ornaments and furniture aren't to my taste, the building itself has a real warmth and charm and gives you a real sense of the local architecture from the inside. While our room (and the others we saw) aren't very big, they're adequately large, comfortable and are well provided with towels, robes, very effective air conditioning, storage space and so on.

Though the staff aren't preset all the time, they seem to care about their guests. On our first day, the owner spent a good 10 minutes carefully annotating a map of the city for us, pointing out good cafes and restaurants, interesting places to visit, ideal public transport routes, tourist traps to avoid and so on.

As others note, there's no lift/elevator, but it's just a couple flights of steps - they're wide, not steep, and there's a good handrail. If you're not able-bodied, or you're taking very large or heavy luggage, you may wish to look elsewhere.

The room was spotlessly clean throughout our stay, constant supply of clean towels, and the simple but good breakfast of coffee, juice and croissants is served promptly every morning (they'll even surprise you with a cupcake, occasionally).

It's an easy 5 minute walk from the hostel to the bustling centre, and a pleasant 20-30 minute stroll to the beach, la Sagrada Familia, etc. The subway is at the end of the next block - couple of minutes' walk at most.

Within a radius of a couple of blocks, there're almost too many tempting restaurants and cafes, and plenty of convenience stores, pharmacies and suchlike too – all very handy after a long day wandering around.

In short, it's an eccentric little place staffed by very genuine, helpful people. It lacks – but, crucially, neither does it claim – the slick, polished convenience of a proper hotel, but in place of that you get, in my opinion, a much richer and more memorable experience of Barcelona.

Incidentally: some reviewers complain of having to "crawl" through the hostel's small door. It's just a slightly smaller than standard sized door set within a huge, heavy old door: I'm over 6ft tall and managed to use it without trouble. If you're not able-bodied, or have huge quantities of luggage, it might be awkward for you, but in that case the lack of an elevator/lift and relatively small rooms means that this isn't the right hostel for you anyway.

Thanks a lot but we want to said few things about your opinion.
Our place is a little Boutique Hotel, category that our costumers give us, nothing that we have invented.
Reception Service is available some hours per day. Reception 24 hours makes the service more expensive and it’s not necessary, not for you not for me. It’s more staying in some friend house, not really necessary to seat here the whole day waiting and waiting and nothing happened. Hours work are very expensive, we want to keep our business running. Our service is 24 hours available also if we are not seating at the reception, we are close and we can come anytime you need.
It’s very clear everywhere L’ Antic Espai is made for peoples who love antics, if it’s not your case, please go to impersonal, black and gray hotels.
Regards,
Abel Estévez González.

From the moment we were picked up at the airport in early August.... to 3 days later rumbling along in Abels's 1955 car to our cruiseship.....I still smile and my family still talks about this experience at Antic Espai. I look back months later with happy memories of this hotel and more importantly the people we met working here. Serge and Abel was professional, real and totally hot! When we walked thru the historic door to the building we were met and our luggage was carried up. I arrived with my teenage sons a night before my husband; we felt safe. The rooms were clean...breakfast was good...beds were comfortable...the decor was spectalor...and the cava bubbly was terrific! (I recommend you buy a bottle of the Antic Espai cava). A side note: Abel let me purchase one of his personal possessions from the hotel; I am so happy to own this and display it with pride! Thank you again. - You will not regret staying at this boutique hotel.

Room Tip: Enjoy a bottle of their Cava....

Hostal L'Antic Espai is ideally situated for exploring Barcelona, being just a few minutes' walk away from the majority of the must-see locations,as well as the aerobus and metro stop. Although on a busy road, the double glazing ensured a good night's sleep in a comfortable bed.

If you want a spacious, sleek, modern room, this is not for you as it is packed to overflowing with antiques and could feel a little cramped. However, that is its charm, with so many quirky and interesting things to catch your eye - I loved it! We had Room 102, which had a tiny glazed-in balcony, complete with seating and pot plants.

All the staff were wonderfully welcoming and made a real effort to make our stay as rewarding as possible. As soon as we arrived, cakes and sangria were produced to welcome us, as well as a surprise complimentary bottle of bubbly on my husband's birthday - they'd noticed that date on his passport! The recommendations for eating out were spot-on, especially the tapas bar a couple of blocks away, and the Argentinian restaurant downstairs that had the best steak I have ever tasted.

Breakfast is an interestiing experience, taken on the terrace and served with amazing tableware (the teapot had a wonderful china stand complete with tea-light!) whilst being surrounded by cage birds and copious plants. However, that is the only place to eat, apart from your room, so not ideal in late autumn.

There's no lift, so you have to lug your bags up a couple of flights of stairs, and there's no tea-making kit in the room. You can tell I'm English and consider an early morning cuppa absolutely essential before speaking to anyone, but there's room service available.

I'd definitely stay there again; the zany individuality of the decor, the location and the superb staff combine to make it a hotel to remember.
