“Good, dependable, without being exceptional”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2012

Hotel Barcelona Catedral is the girl your mum always wanted you to marry but you never noticed; good, dependable, without being exceptional. So, what’s she like then? The Executive Rooms are clean and modern, a decent size and boast a generous bathroom. The wifi is less generous, and only partially mitigated by the availability of three public terminals downstairs (almost always occupied). The service is standard, but, as we discovered after 4 days here, far more friendly than you will receive elsewhere in this tourist-fatigued city. We passed on the expensive breakfast, but my wife enjoyed the upstairs pool area in her downtime whilst I watched the multitude of channels dedicated to Lionel Messi. Barca is a big city whose attractions are spread far and wide, so a judgment on location is particularly subjective. For those looking to be close to the old Gothic Quarter, and close to La Ramblas without being fully immersed in its chaos day and night, this is the perfect choice. Tucked away in a side street near the old Cathedral, you are close enough to the action that you can walk to your destination, but also get a good night’s sleep. Take note though, the walk to La Sagrada Familia is an epic, and the restaurants closest to the Hotel offered mostly over-priced tourist fodder, uninspired at best. All told: good, dependable, without being exceptional.

Spent the weekend at the Barcelona Catedral. The hotel is in a side street virtually opposite the old Cathedral and it is a great location for seeing the old part of the city and also La Rambla. Staff were all very pleasant and very helpful. The rooms are spacious and modern, as is the hotel throughout - the decor and general ambience very chic. It wasn' very busy when we there and we hardly saw anyone else. If there was a disappointment, it was the quite expensive and very basic breakfast. I don't know why they would put a large tray with assorted breads on each table which leaves you almost no room to actually eat your breakfast. Overall though, given the standard of service, the location and the hotel itself, would definitely stay there again.

The staff were friendly, and helpful. The location is great. Quiet, but close to all the city-centre areas. Food seemed a bit over-priced, but with so many restaurants and cafes/tapas bars near by, this wan't a problem

The hotel is around the corner from the Cathedral, so I doubt they have many (or any) rooms with great views, and it might feel unsafe for a woman to walk along that short alley to the front door late at night, but other than that, I thought this was a great find. It is a bit difficult for taxis to get you right to this hotel's front door, so be prepared to roll your suitcase a short block from Via Laetana. The room was comfortable, quiet, and a bit dark - good for sleeping if not really reading. The breakfast was delicious. The front desk staff were very helpful when explaining how to use the free internet or how to get to various attractions. The restaurants around the corner (in front of the cathedral) seemed to be rip offs, but Bar Babia directly across from the hotel seemed more for locals and was delicious. There's also a sandwich shop at the other end of the cathedral's plaza from the hotel that is affordable and good if you want to buy sodas for your room. It's easy walking distance to the Rambla, to Plaza Catalunya (and the subway), and to the churches Santa Maria del Mar and Santa Maria del Pi.

Dear Mr. Darshan,

First of all thank you very much for your nice review!!!

We are very pleased you enjoy our breakfast, everything straight from the kitchen, anything you like for breakfast included in rate. What we call a la carte breakfast. Some clients do not know that thay can order anything and repeat as many times as they feel like (of course this is a communication problem to solve from our side), but comments like yours can help us to better inform regarding our services.

The street is quiet, but not dangerous. Barcelona security service is working hard to finish with pick pockets, but not other security problems could be expected.

Taxis can get to the hotel front door. The street to get by car to the hotel is Magdalenes Street to the end (Sagristans Street) and then turn right. There is a signage allowing hotel guests turn right. We apologize if your taxi driver was not familiar as he should be. On your check out I hope we did call a taxi for you to pick you up from front door :-).

Once again thank you very much for your constructive comment. Comments plentys of tips are very useful for future guests!!!

Receive our best regards, from Barcelona

Lovely hotel, quiet, very modern and very friendly staff - well situated for those on foot in middle of pedestrian area right next to Cathedral and a maze of streets full of shops and restaurants - 2 negative notes - one of our party had their pocket picked just outside - it didn't feel an unsafe area - but we gather it wasn't uncommon. The other was a surprise that the bar shut at 11 pm - I thought Spain kept going all through the night.
