“Good value shame about the cleaner”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Very good location with good access to historic areas and beach. Rooms are small and basic. Staffing costs are minimised by the cleaner also doing night/early morning front desk, but cutting corners by cleaning rooms of early departures. Result = you get woken at 6am by someone banging around and dragging laundry baskets so they can get off earlier. Not acceptable whatever the price.

Room: apartment away from street - very spartan but clean. Bunk beds, pillows and linen ok.
Service: helpful.
Location: brilliant, if beach, gothic and rambla are high on your list.
Value: hard to do better for the price in this area.

Cleaned daily, the Hostal Nuevo Colon provides a great base to all of Barcelona's attractions which can be accessed simply via the local metro links from Barceloneta and the Citudella. There are further bus links, trams and, opposite the hostal itself, the mainline train station which provides access to Ruess, Paris and many other locations. Within a ten minute walk, you can relax and visit the nearby beautiful park, the harbour and the beach.

The hostal itself can be noisy during the night with screaching birds above and people below. Access is mainly from the stairwell, although there is a lift provided that stops every two floors, which has been well used and worn. Be warned that the stairs are uneven due to their excessive use and is poorly lit.

The Reception is around six flights of stairs up from the entrance (you push a buzzer on both accesses for security reasons) and it is here you check in, hand in your keys daily (you aren't allowed to take your keys away with you) and tap into free wifi. However, in room 501, we could get the Internet but on talking to other guests, beyond the main stairwell away from this room, this was not possible. Going back to the reception... it is manned 24/7, has a sitting area with television, table and chairs. It is bright, clean and airy.

There is no fridge or cooking facilities at the Hostal Nuevo Colon. This would have been really helpful. We took a travelling kettle with us. We were glad we did this as there were no where to make a drink either in Reception or our room. However, there were plenty of plug sockets and a sink (suseptible to blocking due to poor down pipe) in our room.

The shower is powerful, clean and is shared amongst the apartment block of around ten rooms (approx). There are two toilets per block and all blocks are accessed with their own doors and keys. This is because the Hostal occupies half the building, it seems, and the rest is occupied privately.

Although the location of this hostal was fantastic, I wouldn't say that our stay here was good value for money when considering similar locations supplied by Corporates. The fact is that we paid more for a 'dindgy hole' than we would at a Premier Inn or similar.

The hotel is very simple and basic but decent and very clean. The bathroom are in good condition. Great location, close to everything, close to metro station. There are few restaurants and small grocery store. The elevator is very small, fit only 3 people no luggage, but ok.

I have visited this hostel several times over the last years (which basically says it all). The location of this hostel is simply great; close to the beach (10 minutes), born (2 minutes), parc ciutadella (5 minutes) and la rambla (15 minutes). The hostel has very basic small but clean rooms and a common living room area. The people at the reception are not super friendly and you'll have to climb a couple of stairs (or go on a very small elevator) to reach the hostel. However, location and value for money are great which make me come back to this place every time I visit Barcelona.

Rooms bare minimum, bed, desk and a chair. Beds so old, cheap and hard you feel the springs on you back, furniture broken, no lamp, old strip lights with electrical tape joints. So hot, fan given had the plug connected with electrical tape.........was afraid to use it!

We stayed here 3 nights and the old man behind the desk never said a single word to us (other than check in when he said 'you pay now' and then the room number), just used to throw us our key when we returned.
Been many places and never had to EVER pay before you have even seen the room.
Read reviews on this place so knew to book a front room.....didn't realise there is EIGHT lanes of traffic outside the window 24/7......ambulances, police, mopeds so defo recommend earplugs or ipod etc..
Location is fantastic and to be honest we left 9.30am and returned 11.30pm so only used it for sleep. Its so close to everything and the tourbus stops right outside if your on a city break and want to do the hop on hop off thing it's ideal.
No breakfasts included but plenty of places just steps away to grab breakfast.

Had a fab time and will go back but would be willing to pay slightly more for another place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a front street facing room for the view BUT take earplugs.

Ten minutes from the beach and la rambla and close to the gothic quarter. The room was nothing special but had a decent sized kitchen and the staff were friendly and helpful. Stayed here with four friends and enjoyed our stay.
