“Not 4 star!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

This is not a 4 star hotel. The first room we were given (room 12) was so small you could not walk round the bed. We changed rooms but it was internal so no day-light but it was bigger. The fan did not work in the bathroom and the AC gave us both sore throats so we could not have it on. Rooms are not sound proof we could hear the people next door coughing. It was clean and the location is very good. Would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 12 very small 302 AC smells stay on 5th floor if possible.

Clean room, quiet, plenty of nearby cafés and near metro station.

Staff was pleasant and knowledgeable.

Spent two nights and had a wonderful tour of the city. Using the metro system was easy and we also used the tour bus for the highlights of the city. The hotel was able to give us a discount if we purchased the tickets at the front desk on the day of the tour. That was very helpful.

Will be glad to stay here in the future.

We stayed at the Zenit Conde de Borrell from 23 - 30 August on our first ever trip to Barcelona. The hotel was easy enough to find from the Metro at Hospital/Clinic but the area itself is very run-down with masses of closed-down shops, restaurants, offices and graffiti everywhere, not very appealing to walk around!

On arrival at the hotel, the lobby was bright, clean & welcoming and the staff were friendly and spoke great English. However, we were disappointed when getting to our room. Although clean and quite big, the room itself was very tired, the wallpaper was grubby and stained in places, the bed not comfortable and generally in need of a makeover. We were at the back of the hotel (we had asked for a front room with balcony or street view but didn't get one) and there was no view - we looked out onto the room of the building below and a kids playground.

The TV didn't work when we first arrived and throughout the entire week the safe in the room was broken and maintenance didn't ever come to repair it. The reception staff (Salvador in particular!) were great at storing our valuables in the main hotel safe each day but this did mean we had to hand in things to them each day and get a ticket instead of leaving them securely in our room to access as we needed. We did complain about this to Expedia and the hotel offered to allocate us to another room but on viewing this was a smaller room and the safe was also broken in this room so we stayed where we were rather than re-pack and move 2 doors down the corridor!

We only ate once in the hotel, ordering room service after a long day exploring...I had to go downstairs and ask for a room service menu as there wasn't one in the room (slightly defeating the point of room service!) but the food when it arrived about 20 mins later was hot and tasted really nice. The drinks we had ordered at the same time unfortunately took ages to arrive & we had both already finished our meals by the time they came!

In general the hotel was OK, the staff were nice and it is pretty central for access to the metro and so on. However, it is definitely not 4 star as it is rated and the place is in need of a re-decoration. I would probably stay nearer to the Placa d'Catalunya or Avienida Diagonal on a return trip as they are equally close to a metro but not too close to the Ramblas to attract ridiculous prices.

Room Tip: If you do stay here ask for a room at the front of the hotel or with a balcony as they are much ligh...

We stayed at the Hotel Zenit Borrell for two nights prior to our departure from Barcelona in August 2013. It can be described as a modern, boutique hotel located on the corner of Calle Mallorca, in the financial centre of Barcelona. The rooms were small in comparison to what we're accustomed to, but extremely clean, with a modern bathroom (toilet, bidet, acrylic enclosed shower, glass two-sink counter, and marble flooring). The rooms also have a safe and a Mini-bar, and are all sound-proofed.

We had two terrific sleeps in their quiet rooms - comfortable mattresses and 1800 thread count bed sheets. Each room has a self regulated thermostat. Inserting your room card into the wall holster, engages the light system and air conditioning which is an efficient way to ensure that the room doesn't use unnecessary energy once their guests leave for the day.

Where the hotel can use some additional attention is with their restaurant breakfast efforts. We're not certain whether some of the staff didn't show up to work that day, but their lone waiter was not able to tend to all of the customers as well as replenish the breakfast buffet which was pretty bare a half an hour before it closed.

For dinner, they offer a set menu for 10.5 Euros with a good selection of aperitifs, entrees and desserts. They also offer an ala carte menu.

The reception staff were helpful and very professional. They booked local events quickly on our behalf. There was free access to a computer and the internet at their reception desk as well. Free Wi-Fi is offered in all of the rooms.

The location of the hotel is great - nice quiet location where a traveller can get sound rest during a vacation, but close enough to the centre of town as well. We found however the local area void of full service restaurants - plenty of small cafes (indoor and outdoor) for quick snacks though.

We would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor (5th) because it's quieter. Elevator is small so you may have to take...

Booked this hotel through Hotwire at a very reasonable cost. Its just a few blocks from the Hospital Clinic metro (the blueline just a couple of stops from the Sants Estacio station). The neighbourhood is aptly described as reasonably quiet. The rooms are more than decent but not overwhelmingly spectacular --- it is afterall not a five star hotel! And let me add my two cents to the soap controversy which a friend of mine would describe as FWP (a first world problem!) The soap comes in an annoyingly difficult to remove plastic wrap. Having met the challenge of liberating it from its package but barely having used it, the maids took it away every day when cleaning the room. I expect they believed they were doing us a favor and replaced with a brand new freshly wrapped soap! You get the idea. In short, not a dealbreaker :-)

The hotel is in a quiet location, yet still not far from the city centre (just 1-2 subway stops, depending on where you need to go).

Overall this is by no means a bad hotel, but if you book well in advance you can get a much better hotel for the same money or less.

The soap problem (where it disappears every other day) described in previous reviews is persistent.

Breakfast was ok, but nothing special - nothing that would enhance your morning mood, which in my opinion is one of the main functions of hotel breakfast ; )

Room Tip: Don't take the smallest rooms, they really are incredibly small. It seems like the bathrooms in...

The hotel was booked for me for 1 night close to the unversity and hospital clinic. It's modern, clean, comfortable and a great place to get a good night's sleep. It's also close to a metro station though I was lazy and took taxis (25 euros from airport). There's no downside here- recommend highly
