This place is off the beaten path on a narrow street. It is a tiny place with seating for about 12 people. As a result, it feels very cozy like you are in a home. The menu options were very healthy, so I was only expecting moderately good food, since health seemed to be a focus. Also, the place sources the food from the local area, hence the name d'aqui, which translates as "from here". Great for fresh local food. Here are the reasons this humble place blew me away:
1. The service was friendly and personal. She took her time to explain our menu options and show us the food. She was courteous and attentive the whole time.
2. The cold soups hit the spot on a hot August day in Barcelona. One was a chilled watermelon and citrus soup and the other was a chilled tomato soup. Both were absolutely delicious and refreshing.
3. I had a Polenta with a simple green salad. The salad was so fresh and had some pumpkin seeds sprinkled on it. I am usually not enthusiastic about such simple green salads, but this one hit the perfect note with the pumpkin seeds and simple dressing. The polenta was perfectly cooked with some vegetables. I am picky about my vegetables, since they can become flavorless if overcooked, or sometimes they are heavily salted, but these were just right.
4. My husband's dish was a vegetable dish with some wheat bulgar. Of course we always switch entrees half-way, so we get to sample more food. I have never been a fan of bulgar, but was pleasantly surprised at the flavor. It was delicious as were the vegetables. We both nearly licked our plates.
This is one of those rare healthy restaurants in which you will not feel as though you sacrificed a good meal to eat healthy. The food is so good that we will return prior to leaving Barcelona. The place is vegetarian and vegan friendly, but there are meat options too for meat-eaters. I can't recommend it highly enough. What a gem of a restaurant!!
