Description: La Colmena is one of the oldest cake shops in Barcelona. For more than a century it has delighted "Placa de l'Angel" square, where it is located, with it's fragrant aroma of home-made candies and cakes. The exact date it was founded is unknown, but we do know that its original name was "Ca l'Abella". In 1849 Rosendo Abella had the shop in the street "Bajada de la carcel" (the prison slope) now called "Baixada de la Llibreteria" (Bookshop slope), situated just in front of the current location. In 1872, the Costa family purchased the business, moved to the current location and changed the name to La Colmena. But maintained both names at the front of the building. Later, the shop changed owners from "Morato i Sant Pera" in 1912 to "Chocolates J. Camps" in 1921. Finally, in 1927, Josep and Francesc Roig Manubens bought the business which is now run by the grandson, Josep Maria Roig. Toni Roig, Francesc's great-grandson and Josep Maria's son, makes the candies following the same recipes and methods centuries ago, like many other traditional Catalan pastries and cakes

“Delicious pastries - we went here almost every day on our trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

We were very lucky to be staying right around the corner from this lovely bakery. They have an incredible assortment of options: cookies, little dessert cups with custard and chocolate, sweet and savory pastries, sandwiches with ham, salame, or chorizo, donuts, meringues, candies, and an entire case full of chocolates and truffles. It's hard to know what to choose, but our favorites were the sandwiches and the mini-donuts covered in sugar (they're flavored with anise, which was a nice surprise.) The meringues were also phenomenal - crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and massive.

I highly recommend going here and just trying an assortment of items. It's cheap and it's hard to go wrong.

The staff were also very polite and patient with our indecision when trying to pick out items, and most of them speak English as well. It can get busy in the mornings, but they use a ticket system to keep things orderly and the line moves very quickly.

“poor customer service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

I had a 10 cent coin that had a color which had deteriorated enough to make it look much like a 5 cent coin. The lady working there wouldn't take it. I pointed it out that it was clearly a 10 cent coin, and she acknowledged that it was, but still would not accept it for it's cosmetic condition. How unreasonable and critical can you be? She reminded me of the Soup Nazi from the well known Seinfeld episode. Anyway, I gave her a different coin and bought the pastry when I really should have just walked out. The pastry was average at best and you can find better at a number of other locations in the city.

“What is this magic?! ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2014 via mobile

Omg what is this magic that's supposedly a chocolate meringue??! It's quite sweet I guess, but totally awesome. It looks and feels stiff like a regular meringue - dip a spoon in and be amazed. Their speciality caramels (boiled candy) aren't too bad either

“A treat for adults and kids!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

As part of the Runnerbean walking tour for kids, we stopped in this pastry and let the kids select one of the locally made sweets which comes in a multitude of flavors ranging from marshmallow to honey and lavender. There are also a variety of chocolates and danishes that will make any mouth water. We returned to the shop shortly before our departure, to take a bag of their sweets home for the friends of our kids. A good find and well worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood.
