Description: La Colmena is one of the oldest cake shops in Barcelona. For more than a century it has delighted "Placa de l'Angel" square, where it is located, with it's fragrant aroma of home-made candies and cakes. The exact date it was founded is unknown, but we do know that its original name was "Ca l'Abella". In 1849 Rosendo Abella had the shop in the street "Bajada de la carcel" (the prison slope) now called "Baixada de la Llibreteria" (Bookshop slope), situated just in front of the current location. In 1872, the Costa family purchased the business, moved to the current location and changed the name to La Colmena. But maintained both names at the front of the building. Later, the shop changed owners from "Morato i Sant Pera" in 1912 to "Chocolates J. Camps" in 1921. Finally, in 1927, Josep and Francesc Roig Manubens bought the business which is now run by the grandson, Josep Maria Roig. Toni Roig, Francesc's great-grandson and Josep Maria's son, makes the candies following the same recipes and methods centuries ago, like many other traditional Catalan pastries and cakes

“Wow! what a find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

A charming bakery with oodles of freshly made cakes, pastries and hand made chocolates on offer - worth a stop if you are roaming around the old town/cathedral. The hazelnut meringues are amazing!!!

“Yummy treats”

Have to save room for a treat from this place. Tasty and flavoursome. Very addictive with some of the very best strawberry tarts I've ever tasted

“Excellent pastries”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013 via mobile

Popped in here one afternoon as the window displays were very tempting. I had a Catalan custard tart and then returned the next day for a vanilla slice. Both were amazing, the custard is creamy and smooth and perfectly flavoured. My friend had a chocolate ball thing that was kinda like icecream in the centre and was also great. Their giant meringues have something creamy in the centre, also enjoyable!

“Looks great - but tastes even better.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

What a lovely patisserie!
It is located just by the exit of Jaume I metro.
We walked past it twice and then realized the cakes on display cannot be ignored.
We went in (while not being hungry at all) and ended up tasting quite a selection of cakes and other sweets.
We took a couple of treats and enjoyed them throughout our day.
Very reasonably priced.
Highly re commended.
